Senator Sherman aimply states well knows historical fact in saying that the Republican party "has conferred greater benefits on the people than any other party that ever existed in this or any other country." A dispatch from Cr.iwfonlsvitle states that Ben Hamberger, the Cincinnati clothing drummer who was killed in the Monon ' -wreck near that place, has a daughter who will, through the adminis trator of the estate, Sol Tannenbauro, brine suit for damages, unless the toad comes down with a large amount. The child now live with her gram! pa rents in Indianapolis. The wife was divorced some time ago, and will not share in the suit. In Marion county Amos Lint"ner raises white rabbits and sell them, and during the rammer he r.ade frequent visits to the cornfield of Wm. Poole, where he pu!l"d the growing corn and carried it away, to be led to his rabbits. The grand jury indicted bim for grand larceny and the case came up last week. To the surprise of the pros ecuting witness the court held that Lintner had net been euiity of larcenT in carrying away the corn. liut of simple tresspass. The court ruled that if the corn had been Withered and then taken away it would bave been larceny, but, be ing still in the stalk and the stalk growing in the ground, it was a part of the realty and could, not he stolen. Lantner was then fined 5 lor trespass and was very glad to get off with so slight a penalty. This may be law bat it don't ea like common sense. "With the same propriety, it wonkl seem, then, that a man may tear all the wealberboarding off your liouee, takeout the windows and doors and divert them to his own rise. ud he is not guilty of theft. One reason tbe farmer's good .wife gets rach good prices for her poultry at d eggs is the demand in the eastern markets. Formerly Canada supplied the eastern mar sets with tnese tames -out since the enactment of tbe MeKinley bill, tbe Canadians cannot ship these things acroes the border withoat tbe payment of a tariff duty. Ho the American women now supply those markets and a better demand is created for these articles. and the price is consequently kept at gooa ngures. with cheap sugar and a good price for eggs, poultry and butter, it will be a ktng time before the farmers' wives and daughters will wish for a repeal of the M cKi aley bill and go baek to old prices. m iai m An important decision was rendered by the supreme court of the State last week which will be f interest to all tbe consumers of coal here as elsewhere. About a year aeo nearly all the coal dealers of New A Ibany were indicted by tbe grand jury tor selling coal by 'short weight, it bad been brought to tl attention of the jury that they bad been selling seventy-two pounds f coal to tbe bushel, making a difference of 200 pounds to tbe ton l ween that sold and the legal weight which is eighty pounds to the bushel. Most of the dealers iudioted paid nominal fines and bins' more Was thaue-hr. nf the matteVBfit Donald D. Blancbard, thB a coal dealer of tbst city, tasgnt tbe indictment. Be was ted it) tbe circuit court and lost im ease, but appealed to tbe supreme cou rt. Tbe court holds tbst where a purchaser knew tbe weight f coal sold bim, was not deceived thereby and was satisfied with tbe amount received, there can be no criminal prosecution, because tbe weight was leas than prescribed law. by A Pennsylvania jury has recently given a verdict of $19,800 damages in a suit brought by tbe victim of s railroad accident against f lie company. Tbe judgment was given for "railway spine," which a well known railroad lawyer ssys is a very po)MiIar disease among the medical fraternity where a man bss been a passenger on a, train that is wrecked and no visible injuries can be made cause for suit. It is supposed to be the injuries to the spinal column resulting from lie shock. As a spinal column cannot be dissected to find out it actual condition, it is difficult, to 4-oocrovert any clsim of injuries that mar arise in such a case.

difficult to make a better floor for horse stalls th in the clay floor solidly tamped to make it hard. 8urh a floor will be elastic without being soft, and is tbe best pnsoible one for msintaioicg a healthy condition of tbe hoof. Littered with straw, att alt floors should be, the liquid manure will all be absorbed, and the straw covering will prevent the sltoe calk from disturbing tho clay. A horse standing upon such a floor will cave a b:m that soft ano yet tough, capable of enduring much more war than a dry and brittle hoof, icb as horses usually bave that stand upon wooden floors. m MOW A BC! ESTI8T DIED. -it IS not often that a dying man regards bis approaching dissolution with the scientific f.renity of the venersble Dr. Kiehet, who was carried eff the other clay by congestion of the lungs, lie was attended by his son, a professor of physiology, and by another medical man, and while ill actually delivered a lectnre on the development of his terrible malady, describing its symp toms and detailing its progress with a more than stoical calmness and indifference to bis fate. Strang er still be said that when those who were attending bim observed rerttio signs in the course of the disease his deitb would be only a matter of a few seconds. His last words were : "You see I sm dying!" and it rosy be said that liichet predicted the very moment of his death. This "strange case" assuredly wotdd have furnished a fertile theme for some ot the older nnd abler writers of weird fiction. London Telegraph. Mr. Cluitterton "Yaw," I've made up my min.t to become a farmer. He needs South American Nervine. Queer People lav Knox Co. An eccentric old man. named John Clark, is dead ot acute pneumonia. He lived in Knox county, Indiana, on a good farm of 300 acres. His sister Susan, who died a few days before bim, lived with him, doing the bouse work while be attended to the farm. They lay cn their death beds in separate little dingy rooms in the tame farm louse, unattended by iiny body saa as the neighbors called in. When told of his sister's death be said he wanted to die too. When be died three revolvers and t wo bowie knives were found under his pillow. He seemed never to have any fear of God or the devil, tied desired no sympathy or love, tie nor his sister ever visit ti and no ote visited them. Neith' er was ever married. Ibey were buried in tho family cemetery near tbe house where tney died. His singularity might be considered a mania, Be attended every public sale of wagons and reapers, plows, buggies, harness, whips and old borses, poor cattle, hogs and sheep. The stock he drove home and turned them into a large pasture where, for want of attention, many died. He infused to sell any of these animal , and often bad great herds ot cattle ana sheep and as many as fifty head of horses at one time. At one time he bad fifty old broken, decayiug whips, thirty sets of old, turn, rotten harness scattered around. These be would sell provided the purchaser would pay more than the original cost. The old wagons, buggies, reapers, etc, be Jelt in an open lot exposed to the snow, wet sod heat. A piece of one af these could not be obtained by s neighboring farmer except lor double the price of a new piece. None of these old things were every used by bim. He seemed to only care to have taem. Uncomfortably Close. Indianapolis Journal. Flow close the next presidential
election will be may be inferred horn a statement by Senator V est in bis letter to the Greystone Club, of Denver. "There are," be says, "443 electoral voters under the new apportionment, and ot these the Democrats can only rely upon 226, counting New York and Indiana with tbe other States that voted for Clevelmd in 1888. The Republicans will have 217 electoral votes, conceding them Montana and Wisconsin, and this would give the Democrats nine majority. J he loss of Connecticut and West Virginia, with six votes each or of either, and one of tbe Sontbern States would give tbe election to our opponents." It will be ob served that Senator Vest counts New York and Indiana, as well as Connecticut and West Virginia, in the Democratic column. The Republicans expert to carry Indiana, and if tbe Democrats pass a freesilver coinage bill and give the President a chance to veto it they will carry New York and Connecticut, also. James G. Blaine has jnst com pleted bis 6 2d year of life. That is, he is about the same age that John Adams and Andrew Jackson were at their election to the Presi dency, and he is younger than W. H. Harrison, Zachary Javlor and James finchsnnn were when they entered the White House. He bas probably lost all de-tire to go to the Presidency, however. He is more useful in his present post than he could be in tbe higher office, and the chances are that be will be kept in it for an additional four years. Spring is nearly here, and. you will perhaps want to purchase a bicycle. Tbe best in the world can be bought of Louden & Co, Markyikgto Reform. Ladies who think of marrying ex -convicts to reform them can get points from Mrs. Charles Callen of Oakland. That estimable lady, when Mrs. Ella Higby. become interested in the Convicts' Home, of that city, and subsequently transferred that interest to ex-convict Callen, and married to complete his reforma tion. Tbe experiment does not appear to have proved a success, Mrs. Calien is now trying to re uovcr $5,000 that ber husband ap propriated as the proceeds from the sale ot part of her property, and she had to seek refuge at a neigh bors to avoid an ex-convict spouse who was brandishing a revolver. Marriage, as a reformatory institu tion for convicts and drunkards, is decidedly a failure, whatever suc cess it may be as an institution to he cultivated for its own sake; but this is a trntli that ladies of a reformatory frame of mind bave to learn by their individual hard ex perience.--San Francisco Exumiucr. Senator Stanford's pica in favor of the two per cent. Joan on real estate scheme is explained His bill does not exclude the subnidized railroad companies from the benefits of the land loan plan, is Mr. Stanford s railroad company Las an immense amount of land upon which it might borrow money at two per cent. This accounts for the mil k in the California Senator's cocoannt. Tbe new half dollar is one of tbe most unique bits of coinage ever turned out by the mint. The cen ter ot tbe "heitdside" of the coin extends beyond the rim, so that two halves when placed together toucb only in toe center, it is impossible to stack up such coins, as the pile is unsteady and topples over with or without tbe slightest I (revocation, w ben tbe new coins tecome worn this objection will be removed, of course, but at present they are too thick and tbe cashiers are doing a great deal of swearing. Tbe men who do a little at gold mining away up on tbe sides of Old Baldy Mt. Sao Antonio at an altitude of about 8,000 feet, say that one of the singular things about their summer life up there is that no cats can live about their camp. They have tried a dozen times to get cats to. live there, in crder to make the camp life more like that of homes in the valley ; tint all efforts have failed. The cats either die in a few years because of the tbin atmosphere, or they run down the mountain sides to get into the air they are used to breathing. Mice and rats cannot live at an altitude of over 7.OC0 feet because of tbe rarity of . th atmosphere.
