.theiea code of newspaper manners?" This is one of the questions which Georsre William Curtis will discuss
ia the Editor's ny Chair. The
eade of newspaper manners, he says, is tbe Bo i versa I code of ennrtesy, and not one restricted to the newpapt't. . "Good manners ia civilised society are the same ev
erywhere and in sli relations. If
a man is a gentleman, he does not eaue to he one because he enters the newspaper bosinets, snd it would seem to be equally true that if his work on the paper does not prove to be that of a gentleman it
eoald not have been a gentleman
who did tbe work. A gentleman does not blackguard his neighbors, aor talk incessantly about himself bis wonderful business success sad his achievements of what he has and what he does a kind of
Jack Homer of a fellow nor he-
have elsewhere as he would be
ashamed to behave in his lodge or church, or his own family. If a gentleman does not do these things
privately, of course a gentleman dees not do them ia a newspaper."

Turned to Stone. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. John Raymond, who resided in Brown county, sold their farm there and re

Mr. C. B. Durban says that the cheapest reaervoir thst a man can build on his land for retaininf water for irrigation purposes is a tunnel run into a hill. An open reservoir in a canon or othar suitable place will lose one-third of its wa ter during the summer from evaporation, while in a tunnel there is no loss. A small spring will supply a tunnel with sufficient water for many purposes. He has illustrated this in a practical manner. On his own lsnd at Meailla Valley he ran a tunnel thirty-five feet long into a hill, in so doing topping a spring ; this tunnel he dammed up, leaving a space thirty-five feet lon'g and the site at the tunnel, which is about five by six feet to be filled with water. - The water be carried to bis bouse in pipes and we observed tbst it supplied his dwelling, another near by, his barn and drying house for raisins, as well as irrigated quite a space devoted to flowers for a garden. He says that the tunnel is the cheapest and best
) form, snd that for eauh dollar expended one can obtain space equal
to twenty-five cuhie reel. An exchange has this to say ofmsnkind: "None are satisfied. One man is struggling to get justice. Some other is flviue from it.
One man it. saving to build a house,
another is trying to sell his build
ing for less then cost, to get rid of
it. One man is spending all the'

The Martinsville Republican is after the sinners in the following
manner: mere is a habit tbat i
frequently indulged in by some
persons who attend public gatherings, and especially church whioh,
if persisted in, may result in one of
the greatest catastrophes that has
ever happened since that of Lot's
wife. No matter what is going on,
if tbe preacher is in the midst of
his discourse or the choir singing s
song, there are those who will turn their beads upoo the slightest noise
being made at the door, to see who
is cocaine and stare at them until
they are seated. Such a habit is
