Tbe object of tbia aaeeting is to elect delegates to district eonvnttoDS which will nominate delegates to the National Convention and a member of tbe Slate Central Committee, and aieo eeleet a eaunty central oommittae to act (hiring tbe approaching caavsaa. The importance of this meeting of the 9th of January is so wail anler8ttud that it would eaperfioona to urge Repoblieaaw to ajttend. The "access of tbe party ia Monroe county in a great degree depeada upon the kind of a that made. The county mmittee should be eboaen with care it should He no hap haaard (erection, but one that has been earefnlly eoaaidered before final action ia taken. There are reasons that' are unnecessary to mention why this should be done, especially ia Monroe county. Republicans here seem to be united, and determtaad upon an active and aggressive campaign that shall elect the county ticket by a substantia! majority. The Democrats feel very confident of success by reason of the fact that at the 'ast election they ousted a Republican Clerk, Treasurer and Judge. This gives them a leverage that w not to be despised, and tbe struggle in 1 892 will be a hard one. If Republicans de-tet-mine to unite for a campaign against the common enemy they can carry the. count. Qn the other baud if they permit personal jealousies to have full sway there is nothing to be expected but defeat. iai Win. On Monday evening, Dec. 14th, in the old college enapel, were held memorial services in honor of Ind iana's dead Governor. Y hile the service originated with the Univer sity authorities, so many citizens were present that the memorial represents as much tbe feeling of the community at large at of the University. After tbe rendering of a suitable selection by toe University quar tette, consisting of Messrs. Asa by, Murphy, Rue and Seaton, Piesideot Coulter made a short statement as to the duty all eil.izens are under to commemorate the good qualities of men in high civil stations. Their citizenship, official integrity, civic services become a legacy to all citiaens and ara to be honored by them and banded down to chil dren as safeguards to the Republic. He then introduced Prof. Woodburn, the speaker from tbe Faculty, wbo id a concise, comprehensive paper said that Gov. Hovey touch ed tbe history of his commonwealth and country at three points : 1st, The pioneer life of his State. The boyhood and youth of the Governor were associated with the trials, fru gality and limited advsntages of the time when the people were lay ing the foundations of the great State of to-day. Gov. tlovey tri umpbed over the obstacles of early times and by energy ana resolu tion fitted himself to touch the history a second time when she was framing a constitution. In the constitutions! convention held dnr ing the fifties, Hovey rendered good service to his state and her citizens. In tbe third point of con tact with history tbe Governor touched not only State but National history. This was during tbe Rebellion, when he did good service at home in restraining tbe evil in fluences of secret political organ isa tions which were hostile to tbe general government. In the field ne renurea sucit vansnt service J a i a that st Champion Hill, before Vioksburg.he won tbe epaulettes of i Major-general and tbe hearty a . aw. . oommeuaation ot reilow soldiers m tbe field and fellow citizens at home. Tbe political life of the Governor was also reviewed, showing bim to have been as successful in civic strife ss with the sword, filling not only high official stations at home but alio an honored and efficient seal in tbe legislative halls of the Nation. After another cng by the quartette, President Coulter introduced Gov. Ira J. Chase, who spoke in an intelligent, interesting and efficient way not only of Gov. Hovey' career in the various capacities alluded to by Prof. Woodburn, but also of hie own association with him in the duties of directing the civil aflairs of the State. Gov. C'.ase in a very felicitous phrase made the dead Governor's life a text for tbe saying of valuable and useful things to the young men and women of tbe University wbo must soon take upon their) selves the responsibilities of citisenship. Gov. Hovey by the simplicity of bis life and the magnanimity of bis charac ter won tbe kindly and affectionate regard of all who were associated with bim in private or official ca pacities, and so Gov. Chase's high est tribute to biro was his worth as a man and a citizen, however valuable and meritorious his services as a soldier and an officer of the State. After a third selection of music President Coulter asked all who would to come and be presented to tbe Governor and his Secretary, Mr. Roberts. The benediction by Dr. Halatead closed the evening. Gov. Hovey sleeps in the peaceful cemetery beside his home, but his influence lives to bless posterity and urge young men to emulate his virtues and to equal if not surpass, his services to State and Nation. iBdlaaua Ilatlry Program of the A nnual Meeting of the Attoeuxtion on Jan, 7.
