BY WELQON J. COBB. etutMcR iv. saa YDRsmr. tin and on with the speed of the win 1 dashed the two horses, bearing in flight to safety the Intrepid Parrel Urey and the courageous and lovely Inez Tracer. Before them, mile aftor mile, spread the hroad, ierel prairie, in niaces ilka aa eawraid carpet dotted with spangles of flowers of the rarest hue and beautj , sad again grown high with rank, heavy grass. The horse they rode wor rapid travelers, sad within an hoar, as they glanced backward, iliey. saw no sign cf their pttrsoers. "Toor enemies have either abandoned the chase, or the long grass bides them, remarked Barrel, as he allowed the horaas to proceed ttire s'owly and glanced-ever the fair moonlit picture spreai before thent, and then at the girl at his side. Darrel Grey had led an adventurous life and had seen many fair women in many dimes, but, he confessed, as he Sued, at the lovely creature who was s companion in flight, none so beaaUfal as laez Tracer. Psrhops It was the novelty and excitsment of their situation; perhaps It was because two earnest, ingenuous spirits had BMt and recognized magnetic congeaia'tty tn youth and beauty; but at s.11 evsnta, as their eyes met, love became mutual though unexpressed. Ins Traeey found an interested listener In Darrel Grey, when she briefly related her past and the events that hud culminated in the adventure of the nlfht In return, Darrel told her who he was a surveyor sent West on business. Ha had become fascinated with a wild Western life, and hod for some years been engaged In the law and mining bnslaass In California. Ha was about to retain East In a few weeks, and quite by accident had come to the little station at Ten Spot, crossing .hither ia a stage coach from a mining esttieiBant located in the mountains that dar. ' Darrel briefly relatod the episode of tM wooBcfed messenger, and modestly referred to his adventure at tho trestle. The deep blue eyes of Ine: Traeey looked Into his own, ss she listened breathlessly to his story of the attemptad signal to the train. "We have been proeeedlnj aimlessly, thinHar only of evading oat foes," said Darrel, finally. "I ain, In a measure, unacquainted in tuis locality except at the mining camps In the hills. " "I wished to reach Miners liulch, If possible, Bald Inex, "but I am at a loss to locate It" "Then yon have beun tare before?" asked Darrel. Yea: I. came to sei my father about Ave yean ago. Since then I have been at school in California, which I left last week when I received a letter directing to come bere, and that a friend of my dead father would meet and care for mo. "Aad this man whom you call Despard n a relative, yoi say?" Inquired Darrel, curiously. "A very distant ono of my father, who never liked him and warned me against him. Last summer he met me at a summer resort, whitlaer our teachers had taken os for a week's vacation. I had Baet hist a. my father's ranch, beyond Miner's Gulch, and I never liked him. Ha annoyed ma with his attentions, and left me very angry when I avoided him, and told him finally that I did not wish to continue the acquaintance, for I received a letter from my father warning ma against him, and telling; me that Dyke Despard was plotting against him and myself, and that ho was a renegade and an outlaw. "And since then?" asked Darrel. "I have never met him until to-night. when yon hoard what he said, and know that he must have some deep object in preventing; my going to the Gulch." Tnen be will be disappointed for ones, Miss Tracey, said Darrel; "for we can find the place by morning. Ob, it lust occurred to me! You say you ex pected friend to meet you at the depot?" Yes; an old friend of my father; a , n who has been known in this region i for years as a scout Ilia name Is Banger Ralph." "l nave beard of ntm. Do yon mow him that is, well enough to recognize him from description?" I nave not seen mm slice I was a child. I do not think I would. Why do yon askf "Because I have an idea that these , horses belong to him, and that he is the who told me first of the trainwreckers. If this is so, the horses prob-1 ably came from Miner'!. Gulch, and we ' wilt allow them to proceed their own j way. They may lead us to the very place to which you desire to go." ' Darrel loosened the rudely Improvised , bridle and allowed the steads to take i their own cocrss. They now began to j leave the prairie and finally entered ft eanyou, following the course of a littlo , stream. "There seems to be a regular trail here," said Darrel. l believe we are on the right road at last, Miss Tracey." You are taking a groat deal of trou ble for me," murmured Inez, gratefully. "What! m running away from the outlaw myself to a. place of safety?" laughed barrel, banterlngly. "No, no; were partners in peril at the railroad train, and hot for you I might have remained end been killed. As it is, as soon aa I have placed you out of dnnger, I wilt return and learn the fate of thoso who were attacked by the train wrecker." As they rode on, however, Darrel wished that such charming companionship could last always. The dawn had come while they were ridirg through the can"on. It was scarcely distinguishable from the moonlight aa yet, but soon thuy knew the full day would break, enabling them more accurately to determine their whereabouts. - . Thai the horses were leading them di rect to Miners' Gutch Darrel did not doubt; bnt a new discovery soon caused the faithful animals to come under the guidance of Darrel again. For at a oolnt where the canyon divided into several minor branches, the girl startled htm with a low cry of alarm. What is it?" asked Darrel quickly. Lookl" He repeated her own ejaculation of concern, as the advancing daylight showed an obstacle to their onward progress down the main canyon. Coming rapidly toward them from the direction in which they were going were four horsemen. Tboy were some distance away, bnt as Inex shuddered and paled, her escort knew that, like himself, she had recog nized the leader of the quartette. "It Is Despard and his men!" she gaspad, in tones of horror and alarm. I fear so, Miss Tracey." "And they are coming straight toward as. - Oh, what shall we dol" Darrel Grey had taken a revolver from his belt and a determined look awe into bis face. "Drive the horses aronnd the rociVs yonder so you will be sheltered," he itald, as he prepared to dismount, A trembling hand detained his own. "No, noi Mr Grey, you must not meet these men, they are armed and desperate, and fonr to one. " "I see no way except to meet and lepei them," eaid Darrel, stanchty; "these men have not come across us again by accident" By design?" Evidently. They know the country and knew we would probably come this way, and have intercepted us by eachirtyWtyan hsraju udvaooe of us,
Aw we discovered? "They cannot but have seen as. Miss Tracey, I beg of you to obey me, and leave me hero alone." "But your peril for my sake!" ' "I will not invite any unnecessary risk. Side as rapidly a you can down on o of the side canyons, and do not wait forme nor delay on my account. I will cover your escape aud, onco satisfied you are out of danger of recapture, will rejoin you unless you reach the gulch before I do so." Darrel cut loose the connecting strip of lasso as ho spoke. Inez cast an anxious, longing glance at her brave protector. "Heaven grant yon may not be lorced to moot Despard and his men!" she breathed fervently. Fly!" ttpok'o Darrel, ereltedly. He could see that the horsemen down tlio canyon wore winding in and oat the rocks as rapidly as they could, and would soon reach the Sjjot whoro be was. Darrel dismounted and led the horse toward the shelter of a Small c limp of high, thick bushes Then he hi i solf selected a place of espionage and defense behind somo rocks. The four riders camo into view as he cast a quick glance down the canyon where Inez had ,iono. To his surprise he could observe no trace of her. "She niUr-t have reached somo diverging gulch anil have pursued a new court o," he decided. "At all events, she is not lu sight for tbo bandits to discover." Darrel lefo'vodto force no encounter with the latter unloss necessity demanded it; for his singlx rovolver would be a
poor match for the. full accoutermenis of his enemies. The hoofs of horses rang out sharply on the clear morning air, and the quartette rounded the last of the rocks which had temporarily shut out a view of the persons they sought "Nowhero in sight, Despard," spoke one of the men. "We certainly saw them here, remarked Dan ton. "Then they have taken the side canyons," spoke Dospard. Danton laughed triumphantly. "They are our game if tbey have," he said. "Why so?" asked one of the men. Because every last one of them ends in a blank wall." Darrel Grey, from his pluce of conceUment, started violently. 'What shall wo do, Captain?" asked oiie of the men of Despard. Divide. Bere are fonr of these side canyons Down one of them our people have certainly gone." "They are nowhere in sight" "They could have gone nowhere else.

"They will bs found, never fear," safd Danton. "They thought to escape, but they are In a trap this time. Hold on, Vance. " The man he had addressed had started his horse toward the side canyon down which Inez had disappeared a few moments before. "Why, what's the matter?" You needn't search that pass, " "Not search it?" "No." . "Why not?" "It would be no use, and dangerous to yourself. That is Quicksand Gully. " "I novel heard of it before, said Vance. That's because you don't know the country as I do. The man who rides into the shifting sands at the end of that gully never comes out again. " The heart of the horrified watcher behind the rocks stood still. An appalled sense of peril overwhelmed the startled Darrol Grey. Quicksand Gully! Great heavens!" he gasped wildly. "Can this be true? The quicksands! Is that the meaning of the sudden disappearance of Inez Tracey?" CHAPTER V, . THI QUICKSASDS. Help! The cry rang out wild and alarmed, but it met no responsive echo from the gloomy dopths of Quicksand Gully. It emanated from the lips of Inez Tracey, aud announced precisely the peril to which Danton had alluded the quicksands! When Inez had loft Darrel Grey she star tail down tho side canyon, satisfied that to delay or disobey her brave protector would bs only to enhance her own peril and to obstruct his movements agains t their oucmies."When he sees I am at a safe distance he will fol'ov; me, aud a conflict with Despard and his men may be avoided," murmured Inez hopefully. The horse she rode made rapid progress, but when she came to a point where the road-bed of the gully narrowed and descended, the animal seemed loath to procoed. It was with difficulty that she induced the steed to proceed, and. when he did so, she noticed that his footing was insecure and that there seemed no outlet beyond the narrow cnt she had entered. A little stream seemed to lose Its way by a sinuous course around a sharp curve in her path, and, hopeful that bey or d that the canyon might widen again, Inez urged tho horse over a randy slretc i of soil. Above her the ledges of rocks frowned down ominously, and she felt a vague sense of uneasiness-, as once or twice the horse came to a dead stop and neighed and tromb:ed with a strange terror she could not comprehend. At last his fore feet sank deep in the sand; he made a desperate effort to lift his uoofg, and then, stumbling, came to a second stop, panting with fright and inability to proceed. "This is strange," murmured Inez, concernedly. "The horse must be exhausted with the lone drive. " Her face became white as marble tho next moment, bqwever. She had made) a sudden discovery, so startling and appalling that a low cry of dread escaped her lips. "The horse Is sinking!" Merciful hoavens: I understand now!" she gasped. ?Ve are in the quicksands!" For a single moment the thought paralyzed every energy. She saw the horf'3 flouudor and try to freo himself vainly, she felt the shifting sands incase her own feet, and then she made a desperate effort at escape. A blank despair settled down over her mind as she did so. Behind and on all sidei) of her the dawning day showed plalniy the full extent of her awful peril. A sickening dread tiossessed her, and her eyes closed In prayer as they fell upon the changing mass of sand, to step upon which meant to ensnare herself more deeply in its grasp. "Help!" One single cry for aid, one last prayer to heaven, and Inez Tracey resigned herself to a late that seemed inevitable. Meanwhile, in the main canyon, Despanl and his men were searching every nook and corner in the branch gullies for the missing girl and her companion. The latter, Darrel Grey, know but one impulse as he recalled the terrible words of Vance. Iaez Tracey had rode on to peril, perhaps to death Itself, and he know that every moment of delay might be fatal to the devoted life of the girl he was fast i learning to lovo. lie could not secure tne norso ana leave the spot unpercetved, however, for Despard and his men were in the vicinity. There was only one way to gain the side gully, down which Inez Traosy had disappeared. This was to crawl along the ground, and, reaching! the den?o undergrowth which abounded in tho place, reach the edge of the roadway, ascend, the deep side of the canyon which was not high at this point, and drop down on the other side. This Darrel started to do at once, aud succeeded so far that five minutos later, with somo few bruises, he dropped Into Quicksand Gully. His gait was a rapid one as ho sped down the gully, taking the same course followed by luez a few moments previously. A cry of mingled hopo and susponse broke from hit Hun us bo tamed polst
in the gully which enabled a view of the stream. Across the treacherous sai.dy bottom of tho gully he taw r,he missing girl. The horso hud sunk deep into the shifting sands, and held the antan&l and its rider secure prisoners. "Inez! Miss Tracsy! cried Darrel, in agitated, tones. A glad cry broke from the lips of tl-" imperiled girl. Darrel cbmprnhonded tho situation at a glance. He knew that to rush towards ber over the suuds would only be to Involve himself In similar peril. He therefore began to climb the ledge Of rocks by the sido of tho place, eagerly Scanning the ground as ho did so. Then, with tils hunting knife, he cut ft long length of heavy trailing vine. "Do hot despair," he cried down to Inez, aa he leaned over tho ndge of the rocks. "I am about to lower a vJn to you, Seize It, and hold firmly to it" Tho girl gmsped the extended moans of escape a minute later. . ith prodigious strength, nerved by love and courage, Darrel Grey pulled at the other end. He thrilled with wl'd delight as h observed that the effort freed Ine?. lrom the encroaching sand. She clutched at the shrubs on the rocky wall as she began to ascend.. "Thank heaven, you are safel" It was a wild, grateful aspiration that escaped Darrcl's lips, as he lifted Inez over the lodge, and felt her soft, clinging touch, and saw the light of love and devotion In bor graceful eyes The horse, relieved of the weight of its rider, mado ono last effort to freo himself, floundered and turned. Then, with a wild neigh of delight at escauo, the s tood
dashed down tho canyon road In tho direction whence it had come. to bs continued, i . iiaitFlahlne A very important trade in the small villages scattered along tho coacit of Newfoundland is that of selling bait, and in many cases the catching of it forms the sole employment of the majority of men in those localities. Tory early in the year the first bait purchased by the ood fishers is frozen herring. 'The fish are caught in seines, by the liviera, as the natives call the bait dealers. They are frozen and placed in the vessel's hold, where they are covered up and thus kept fresh for throe or four weeks until the weather becomes too warm to allow of their use. Then it becomes necessary to put ioe on the bait, which ia plaoed in pens in the hold, a lnyer of chopped ice being Spread betwmn each layer of h?r About the middle of June a oai ins; used. These are captured in small drag-seines made especially for the purpose. They are stowed away in the same manner as the herring, large quantities of ioo being broken into small pieces and spread over them in the bait pens. The most popular form of bait, however, is the sqtiid. The liviers first begin angling for them in the latter part of Julj and continue until they disappear in October. At the beginning of the season they are takon in enormous quantities, so many 1ein caught that in a single day a vessel can secure 20,000 or 40,000 of them without stopping in the harbor long enough to make it necessary to haul down her sails. The method of procuring this variety of bait is unite interesting, tho only apparatus being a kind of hook called a jig. This consists of a stout lino secured to a lead cylinder threo inches long, fastened to which are several stout pins best upward. No bs.it is used, the jig being let down into the water and kept constantly in motion in imitation of a small fish. A squid wQl throw its long tentacles aronnd the jig and immediately become caught iu the pina, when it is dextrounly hauled into the boat. Squids have a very unpleasant habit when being thus landed of discharging a stream of salt' water into the faces of their captors, and this is almost instantly followed by a jet of dirty, black, ink-like substance. As a matter of course this is decidedly disagreeable, even to a weather-beaten squid-Usher. Occasional ly giant squids are caught, some specimens being so bulky as to furnish bait for two vessels an amount equal to 60,000 to 70,000 of the small variety. Salted clams are very frequently utilized for baiting purposes, and very often birds such as the hagdon or groat puffin, noddy and stormy petrel serve the same purpose. The.-ie birds are caught with a hook and line, and upon boing pulled on board are killed with clubs. When bait runs short, flsh entrails called "gurry" by the fishermen are called into requisition. In addition to those, lady-fish, lant, fish eggs, alewives, porgies, piokled menhaden, yellow flfh aud salmon are used by both the trawlers and hand-line fishers ou the Banks. PoilIhua of Sheep. "No animal that walks on four leg.is as big a fool as a sheep, " says a sheep-raiser. We have to watch, them every minute, and if vigilance is re axed for an instant tho entira flock is likely to practically commit suicide. In handling most animals some degree of self-help or intelligence can be relied on to aid the owner in saviug their lives, but sheep sat deliberately to work to kill themselves. If caught iu a storm on' the plains tboy will drift before the wind and die of cold aad exposure ralher than move 1011 yards to windward to obtain shelter iu their corral. To drive sheep against the wind is absolutely impossible. I once lost over 1,000 head because 1! could not drive them to a oorrel not !!00 feet away. In the corral they are still more foolish. If a storm comes up they all move ' down wind ' until stopped by the fonce. Then begins the oroeoec'limr so much dreaded by sheepmen, known as ' piling.' Tho j sheep will climb over each other'3 ' backs until they are heaped up ten feet high. Of course all thoso at the bottom are smothered. Not one has sense enough to seek shelter under the lee of the fence, as a horso or a dog would do. Again, if a sheep gats into I a quicksand its fate teacheu noUuug to those that come immediately after, but the whole flock will follow its leader io destruction. No more exasperatiogiy stupid brute than a shoep walks." Kew York Tribune. Fifteen years ago a little till between Mr. and Mrs. 3.
