A core saw, intended for boring ont barrels from solid logs, was re cently completed at Tenotoo,Mss8.t for a company in Lacrosse, La. The saw is made of wrought iron, cylindrical in shape, and steel cut ter teeth are distributed about its edge. It is expected that the taw would cot a barrel per minute, and during a trial of the first machine cere 161 inches in diameter and 81 J inches long was bored out in thirty seconds. A mill for tbe manufacture of. barrels by these machines is to be built in LouisSt. Louis Globe-Democrat : Tbe changes which go to make heart disease take place slowly, and go on for years withont mak ing tbeoselves known to the vic tim ; and in not a tew cases death occurs soddenly tram such disease without its existence benig suspected. On the other hand, there are persons who think they have bears disease when tbe structuni or that organ is perfectly healthy. They complain, of bad feelings in tbe cardiac regions, palpitation, irregular breathing, etc, and such symptoms would naturally suggest disease. In these cases the trouble is purely nervous in character .; that n, tbe nerves which control the working of the heart are ia some way deranged. And very generally this derangement is the result of dyspeptic trouble. Those who exhibit tbe signs described should torn their attention to tbe stomach and try and overcome them bv careful attention to diet. Tbe Quantity of food taken should be no greater than health and strength demands, and only substances eas ily digested should be eaten. In s people even with fairly strong digestive powers, tea and coffee cause palpitation of the heart, henoe tbeir nee ta forbidden. Tobacco also gives rise totbe same symptom. Of coarse, this habit, and all others which tend to produce nerve weakness, should be discontinued. Where trouble with the heart is purely functional tbe remedy lies with the victim, and by wise re straint a cure ia generally effected. Level Cwltatre tew Cent. American Cultivator. Most practical farmers are agreed that level culture, at least during the latter part of tbe season, is mach the best for the corn crop.
Styltos,
Piling dirt around the hills does no good whatever to the stalk and there are many reasons why it is injurious. It tbe roots were at the base of the stalk it might be urged that tbe earth drawn over them would supply them with more moisture and plant food. Practically tbe feeding roots are in tbe middle of tbe rows, and the large a m -a sinewy braces which tbe stain throws out at its base are for pro tection against winds, not to supply the plant with food or moisture. riling much dirt over these braces rots them off, and tbe stalk is then defenseless against wind-storms. If nature wanted earth over these braces she could have started them under tbe ground. A level surface holds tbe water better from evaporation, and late in the- season there is rarely any moisture to spare in tbe soil. Besides all this, the light surface cultivation, which is alone tolerable with level culture, does not cut off corn roots as does tbe deeper tillage between the rows required in leaving a furrow be-tweenthfihwW-&sttrz thus treated has manv ears not fill ed out to the end, as corn ears should be. Says an agricultural exchange: "It is of the greatest importance to wheat growers to remember that wheat properly stacked after harvest, and allowed to go through the natural coring process, is more merobantable than when threshed and shinned to market directly after cutting. It is to the interest of all concerned that wheat be stacked, as unquestionably if thresh ed from tbe shock it will sell at a heavy discount under old wheat, as it will not be in export condi tion."
