Parkerson, who led tho mob that lynched the eleven Sicilians in New Orloans, is about thirty-eight years of age and a lawyer. He is a son of J udge Parkerson, of Lafayette, La. It was believed that tho regular Dem ocracy, or "Tho Ring," as it was called, would count In the defeated candidates The Young Men s Democratic Association was organized on a military basis, and miring the three or four days while the ballots were being counted a company armed with Winchester rifles stood on duty at every john c. wiCKurvn. polling placo In tho city and watched tho count. He declined office and devoted himself to private practice. Another potent factor in the recent affair John C. Wickliffo, whose speech at the Clay statue set the mob in motion. He is a business man of excel lent standing, is cool-headod and deter mined. Mr. Wickliffo Is ono of the nrogresslvo yonng men of tho Crescent City. A WlM Father. Here, for instance, is a story, taken from the Chicago Herald, of a boy who wished for a half-holidar. bnt. as his father knew, was not really in want di it. When I was about 11 years old I one day rebelled axrainst aroinir to school. I preferred the hook and line and the babbling brook, and I said to father, a farmer, at the dinner-table: "Can't I stayont of school this afternoon?" un, yes," he answered, promptly, to my no little surprise. 1 ate my dinner with keen anticipa tion of a jolly afternoon, bnt as we rose from the table father said; "Come with me. Madagcar and Its Paopl. The island of Madagascar, the largest and most important of the African islands, is situated in the Indinn ocean, separated from the east coast of Africa by the Mozambique channel, which ia in its narrowest part about 250 miles broad. The length of the island is about 1,030 miles, average breadth 226 miles, and the area is estimated at 230,000 square miles, or about seven times that of the State of Indiana. The population is about 6,000,000. The general surface of tho country is mountainous, some of the highest peaks rising from 6,000 to 12,000 feet above the sea level. There is, however, considerable arable land on either side of the mountain ranges. There are several rivers, navigable for small boats, and several natural seaports. The climate ia exceedingly diversified, both in temperature and salubrity. In the lowlands and along tho coast the heat is intense, but in the interior the mercury seldom rises above 85 deg., and on the mountain summits ice is sometimes found. The rainy season continues from December until April. The coast region, with few exceptions, is extremely unhealthy to natives of the interior as well as to foreigners, the rank vegetation and stagnant water causing a deadly fever. This is also the case in many interior valleys One elevated spot near Tananarivo is so unhealthy that banishment to it is considered equivalent to condemnation to death. Among the plants peculiar to the island ia the ravenala, or "tr irolor's tree," so called because at all seasons its trunk, when an incision is made, yields a cool, sweet and wholesome beverage. Its wood is used in the construction of dwellings, and for many domestic purposes. Mahogany and ebony also abound. Madagascar produces rice, which is the principal food of the people tobacco, sugar, cotton, indigo, and various spices; also cocoanuts, bread-fruit, plantains, bananas, yams, and a great, variety of tropie and temperate fruits. Tho coffee-plant has been introduced and thrives well. Domestic poultry of all kinds aro raised in profusion. Cattle, both wild and tame, are numerous, and are generally humped as in India. Sheep and pigs are found in some districts. The sheep, like those of the Cape of Good . Hope, have long legs and fat tails, and are covered with hair instead of wool. Horses have been recently introduced. Book salt is an important article of inland trade,
and it is said that there is coal in one of the rivers. The rivers swarm with crocodiles, some of which are twenty feet in length. Serpents of great size are found, but few are venomous. Living near BluS Knob, iin this county, is a remarkably aged and wellpreserved couple, "uncle" Johnnie Hill, aged 96, and his wife, Fannie Hill, aged 97. They have been married nearly eighty years and lived together in the greatest happiness during this long period of years. Uncle J ohnnie is hale and hearty, enjoys the company of yonng people, and, although he does on work himself, every morning, no matter what kind of weather, he goes out and superintends the feeding of his stock. His wife is very cheerful and bright, superintends her housework and does some of it herself, tilie can read very well without specs. Uncle Johnnie tells some very interesting in cidents connected with his yonng days, among other things his trip up the Mississippi from New Orleans on the first steamboat ever on that river. This an-' cient couple have lived to see their fifth generation and have undoubtedly been married longer than any other couple in Jhe State. Ja6et7HouM (y.) Kews. - laving Fountains. The tens or Sollelllagwoade. The great looks of Sohellingwoude that let you out into the Zuidor Zee are worthy objects of interest to tbsse of engineering tastes huge piles of abstruse masonry, machinery and iron, so solid and serious, so free from anything frivolous, that I feel tempted to assume scientific knowledge enough to weight this rambling article with a savingblast of solid matter. Why shouldn't I? Thousands of people write about abstruser matters art, for instance of which they know infinitely less than an artist knows about engineering, and they manago to come off with eolat. Why should wo not have the credit of making those great hulking locks feel small and humiliated? It would not bo difficult They really lack tho elements of simplicity and quiet that mark tho looks on tbe Upper Thames. There are no flowers, no ginger-beer, no bending reeds or waving willows, no fresh gush of water here and there between the leaky wood-work, that lend such an air of picturcsquoness to a fino old river lock. These comparisons skillfully brought to bear would pass for criticism very well, and wo should escape the reproach of having gone through one of the most noble monuments of modern engineering skill without a word of appreciation. These locks, the pride of Holland, that seem to hold two mighty floods by the throat with a gigantio stony grasp, and to keep the seas at bay, surely doserve more worthy comment than we know how to give them. It is not our purpose to introduce guide-book matter in the way of statistics ; we had only about ten minutes' expeHence of those mighty works, and they were given mostly to things pictorial. We own to being impressed, even dazed, by these splendid examples of Dutch engineering skill, to say nothing of courage and enterprise. George M. Houghton, in Harper's Magazine, A Ilu.band and tha Mule. Wakefield Starkey, of Austin, while crossing the track of the International and Great Northern railroad on a valuable mule, was struck by a locomotive and killed. The mule was also hurried into eternity. Wakefield Starkey, although a perfect gentlemon on the street, was a perfect tyrant.of the deepest dye. Without any provocation whatever, he used to beat his wife and lock
her up m the wardrobe; hence, when she heard of his death, it was not so much a case of heavy bereavement as it was of mitigated affection. As the engineer of the locomotive was clearly to blame for the accident, it was suggested to the widow that she bring a suit for damages. She resolved to do so, and called at the office of the railroad company. The proper official happened to be in. The widow had such a clear case against the company that it was deemed advisable to compromise tbe matter. "Now, madam," said the official, after the widow had thrown back her veil and stated her business, "we aro willing to do what is fair in this matter. There is really no occasion to go to law. It is a. delicate subject to discuss; jo I think, without going into the merits of it, I will tender yon a check for $3,000, and you will sign a paper releasing the company from all further demands." The widow started and asked: "How much?" "I am authorized to pay yon $3,000." "I accept it," she said, very mnch agitated. The check was handed over, the papers signed, and tbe widow walked out into the street in a bewildered framo of mind. As she cashed the check, she said to herself, confidentially, "I didn't expect to get more than $50. jnVresses and Wigs. There is aNremarkable mystery surrounding the o'rigin of the custom of the Jewish women cutting oft their hair and donning a Vig on their marriage. The stubborn adherence to this custom suggested tho plot ofJihe gloomy story whioh concludes the "Jews of Barnow. Even in the present day the oustom is still observed by the ultra-orthodox. The effects of the custom were supposed to givo a clew to its origin. There was undoubtedly too mnoh reason in the middle ages for Jewesses to bo eager to make themselves as unattractive as possible. The custom of cutting off the hair of the bride on the wedding day is not mentioned in the Talmud. According to Mishnah Ketu both (vol. 6) it is contrary to Jewish custom for married women to appear in the street with head uncovered. Out ef modesty the custom was also observed in the house, and in order to remove the possibility of yielding to temptation the hah? serving no longer as an ornament, but being a superfluous weight on the head was entirely out off. According to Mishnah Nazir (iv., 5) the cutting off the hair is considered a disfigurement; which the husband could veto in case of his wife being a Nazarite. Somo few believe that the custom dates from the very earliest times, and that they found their opinion upon the allusion 'thereto in Deuteronomy xxi., 12.
