Bob Bordette has some sensible views about bote life. At Indianapolis last week be was stopping at a fint-clasa hotel; bat be doesn't fancy it. He says life away from home is a boat the same as being in jsiL "Now take this hotel and its contents a fine example of the average hotel apartment and wherein does it differ materially from the avenge jail convenience ? There's a tied, here's a place to wash my fare, there are plsees to sit down and I can have my meals here if . I want them. Oh, yes, there's a window. Now a chap gets all that in jail. I don't know ibatynn ever had experience in mil, bat I assure you my estimate is correct." Tbe lat ter are sees aot yet fully elevated by the church to a bishopric Tbe asmes of such dioceses are the vi cariate of North Carolina, Idaho. Brownsville, Utah, Arizona and tbe Perfect-A postolic of Indian Territory. Tbe archdioceses are Baltimore. Boston, CWcaeo, Cin cinnati, Milwaukee, .New Orleans, New York, Oregon Philadelphia, St. Louis, St Paul, San Francisco and Santa Fe. Tbe regular dioceses number 67 i be total number ot vnets is 8778. Of these 2354 are so-called regular, or priests of the different orders, and 6424 are secuKar priests. There are 7631 regular churches, besides 1830 chapels and 2841 sta tions. The. latter are places where tnere are not yet any eburenea or regularly stationed priests. There are 39 theological seminaries with 1711 students. Besides there are 123 colleges and 600 Sisters' Academies, or training schools for girls and young ladies. Of parochial schools there are 3277, with an attendance of 665,328 scholars, and tbe Catholic population is placed at 8,579,966. There are at least a half million Catholics who have either fallen away from the church altogether, or who for many years have failed to comply with the rules of the church, so tbat tbe Catholic population of the United Slates at the present time can be estimated as beine tuny 9,000,000. Wealthy Chicago Mail. Andrew Carnegie is the richest Scotchman in the world and he does not eare who knows it. . He began work at S3 a week and bis income last year exceeded one million dollars. The general appropriation bill makes ao allowance of 119,000 for tbe custodian, engineers, janitors, etc, and $22,000 for repairs, gas, water and heat, a total of f41.000 a year. The Democrats of tbe Legislature have elected Montgomery Marsh of Hancock county, Silas A. Hale of Adams, and James B. The House Thursday, after it was too late to do any good, instructed Mr. Gent to have his committee (temperance) to report on certain bills referred to it, but these reports will not be made. The course of Mr. Gent in this matter, and others as well, has not ' been creditable to himself or to those who sent him here. Shortly after dinner Thursday somebody cruelly fooled the whole state house congregation by start ing a report that Palmer bad been elected senator from Illinois. The report was found to be a grape vine. Ind. Journal: Epbraim Ionian, ot Martin and Dubois, is known to feme as "the boy orator of Hoop-pole Hollow." His chiefi characteristic is a vast expanse of shirt-front. Look where you will in the House, that enormous shirt bosom looms op in the horizon and forces itself upon your vision. After you have surveyed its dimensions your eye will be caught by a towering roll of hair on the right band side of the boy orator's bead, aad you will wonder that you did not see it before. The op pressed laboring man is Mr. Io nian's hobby, and he whangs away at the subject just as vigorously as 1 1 . ii i .1 i vuougn oe ueiieveu an nis lareaqbare oratorical formulas were fresh to the public ear. Nature was generous with Mr. Watson, and if be would run a lawn-mower over his face and give a tailor a half a chance be would be a remarkably fine-looking man. He has never been known to ssy a word, and has only done one thing this session. It occurred to him one day tbat going crasy was mighty expensive these days, and he straightway introduced a bill to cut down the fees and do away with the red tape in lunacy inquests.
