A swindler appeared in Cairo the other day with a new game that of converting old, rancid, unsalable butter into an article as fresh as the choicest creamery. He went into several stores to sell his process, and finally exhibited at Smith - Bros. . He took a smalt chunk of bad butter, put it in a bowl and worked it a while according to his process, and then

sent the individual to whom be was imparting the secret after some

salt, when be threw the butter out and substituted a fresh lump which he had in bis pocket. The trick was discovered and the fellow taken in by the police.

Messrd. Gent aud Teal voting against it. News: One of the Representatives from a uorthern county made a successful effort to "dodge" the vote on the county-seat bill (Hammond against Crown Point, Lake county), the other day, and begun writing alleged telegrams at a great rate. A member went after him but he said; "Don't bother me about little matters j nrj partner in Chicago has just busted and I am about to lose bevcral thousand dollars, and am very busy telegraphing about it." The intruder went away, but another came and this time the dodging member said : "Please don't bother me, my wife is dying arid I am telegraphing home.1' The- two men t who came after him' compared notes and thus the story got out. " Washington Gazette: . .Representative Lindemuth, in a well prepared speech, reported in favor of the reduction of fees as well as f-a'aries. He said it is not mrrely the amount of fees that go to officers that needs reforming, but tbe whole fee system. The fees are too numerous, ton large, too exorbitant, too cumulative, too ahundaur, too omnipresent, too voracious, too insatiable and too inexorable, and that is what the people want relief from. Many of the present fees he snid should be ubolishiid and others induced. Mr, Lindemuth said, if II is enough for recording a deed or mortgage in Ohio it should be enough in Indiana. With our short forms it in certainly more than enough. So of clerk's fees, sheriff's fees, treasurer's fees, auditor's fees, justice's fee, prosecutor's fees, etc. ; they. thould . all be cut dowu. The people, said Mr.Lindetuulh, would understand, and appreciate this kind of refottm, and tbey would get the benefit of it at
