A national committee, was appointed by the assembly to revise the home mission system. This com
mittee . held its first session tbe afternoon of Feb. 17f in the United Presbyterian chutch, at the
point of Massachusetts avenue and
East 'streets, Indianapolis.
. The United Presbyterian church
was formed in loos by the union
of tbe Asrocia'te or "Seceder" and
die Associate Beformed Presbyterian churches. The membership has grown from 55,000 in 185S to 103,000 and the contributions for home-mission work from S22.O00
to about $300,000 per year. The
greater part of the membership is
in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio,
Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas
and Nebraska. The church sup
ports a number of Indian missions
in the Northwest, and a Chinese
mission at Lbs Angeles, Cal
Work is also being extended among
the colored people of the Booth
A college with 300 colored stn
dents has been established at Knox-
ville. There are missions in East
Tennessee. Northern Alabama and
in Virginia.
The demands for money and men

Pike roads of Jlonroo county : Since there have been many complaints made at the Auditor's office within tlje past few days about people hauling heavy loads over the pikes during muddy weather, I deem it my duty, as Auditor of the county, to call the attention of all persons interested, to the- act passed by the legislature of 1889, concerning said question, which is as follows: sec. 1, pages 378-379 -r "Bo it enacted by the General Asaombly of tbe Stale of Indiana, That it shall be unlawful for any person to baul over any turnpikes or gravel roads at any time when the same ia thawing through, or Is by reason of wet weather in condition to bb cut up and injured by heavy hauling, a load on a narrow-tired wagon of more than twenty hundred pounds, or on a a broad-tired wagon, of more than twenty-five hundred pounds, and any person violating the provisions of tbis act shall "be lined not less than five dollsrs nor mere than Any dullars for each load ao bauled."
