Numerous disguises, to, ether with some burglam' tools and stolen property found there, had served to still more firmly establish the guilt of the reader. The scene was the offlos of the Cook County Hospital, at Chicago, the time, four days after the events narrated in the previous chapter. The eolloauv was earried on between the severe-looking offloial in charge and a well-dressed young gentleman, wearing a black mustache, small side whiskers and a pair of gold-rimmed spectacles. "Whom do you wisb to see?" asked the man in charge, after having noted the gentlemanly appeirunoe of his interlocutor, "Matthew Ellend," "The detective?" "Yes, sir." "Yon can't do It,"' -And why not, sir? It's a matter of considerable importance." "Don't you read the papers?" "Sometimes." "Don't yon know that he's in the insane ward where nobody sees him except the doctors and attendants?" "I heard something of the kind," "Then why do you come here?" "To see Mr. Hyland." -Yooan't doit. It would do you no good anyway, He hasn't spoken a word since ae was orougni sere two wee ago." I know it. His wife thinks that if I were to see him in private it might have the effect ot recalling him U himself." The young man ooncluded by handing the other a letter. "She does say that," responded the official, when he had perused it. "Well, you can go up and stale the matter to the physioian in oharge." five minutes later the Doctor, a pleas-ant-faeed gentleman, was reading the note of Mrs. Hyland in which she requested that the bearer might be permitted to see her husband privately. "It's an unusual request," commented the medical man as he twirled the piper in his hand. "Do you know him personally?" "Yes, Sir." Intimatel''f "Kot very; but I know of matters whioh his wife is certain will interest him and, as she hopes, rouse him from the lethargy into which he has fallen." He uttered the words in a loud, penetrating tone. j There wss a sound of skurrying foot- , moment later the door was thrown open and the attendant appeared. Thanks to his liimblo fingers. Cole had been able to readjust his artificial embellishments in time to eseape detection. However, as he looked at Hyland and noted in his eyes a look of intelligence that had been lacking n moment before, he feared (hit the detective might speak and reveal his identity. "What's wrong?! asked the attendant. "Nothing, 1'to gotten him to speak, and believe he will come to himself completely before long," He made a quick gesture, - which the other understood, and at once quitted the room. Do you know me, Hyland?" asked. Cole, as the door closed. The other stared, but less vacantly than at first, aud this time he shook hishead. 8 came on a professional m titer. " continued our hero. The other nodded as if be understood the meaning of the remark. "Where are the St. Cyr bonds?" Cole asked this in what mar be called a stage whisper, to whioh, by his manner, he lent as great an air of mystery as possible, The effect upon the deranged man was wonderful. "That's itt that's it!" he kept repeating. "Then you know?" I know nothing." "But you said. " "What bonds?" "The St. Ovr bonds." "Qb! I've been trying trying"Bnt you know where you put them?" You go out and IH be there soon enough," "Don't say where you're going?" "Don't try to givo pointers to me, boy. I know my business! Go and do your part of it!" Cole doublod whether tha impression made upon the still disordered mind of , the detective was slrontf enough to en-; dure, and cause him to find his way out of the hospital, but he had no other ' course to adopt but rely on the ehanees j of 'hi doing so. I Accordingly, he quietly quitted the plaoe and entered a elose carriage in which he had been driven from the center of the eity, a d stance of two miles and . more, The means for purchasing his new out- ! fit and prosecuting his scheme for his own vindication, and the punishment ot the murderers of Paul St Cyr and his fair daughter, bad been supplied by "TJnole Jerry," sg he still continued to cull the rather wicked o'd lunatic, through whose fancied relationship be had escaped deatb. His objeot in visiting H land bad not -

In accordance with his directions tbi backman drove his horses slowly up and down Harrison street, in front of tha large county building. Some time passed and tha shadows ol evening were beginning to gather beside lofty buildings and in narrow passageways. Our hero had about abandoned hope, and was thinking of som othei way of securing the co-operation ot Hyland, whan, suddenly, he heard a noise, and saw the detective fanning toward the vehicle. An instant later he had thrown open the door, the officer had entered, and tha carriage was being driven rapt! sway. TO the Sfiuth Side," said Hyland, laoonioally. V When that splendid driveway, Michigan avenue, Was reached, he Cave more specific directions and indicated a building on a business street only two blocks from the house where ha had received hit wound, a fortnight before. Arriving there, they at onoe quitted thi conveyance and ascended to the third floor whioh seemed to be rented out tot living apartments. The detective produced a key, wits with whioh he opened a door and ushered his oompanion into a fcmall room, fitted up for a sleeping apartment This was a room which the detectiri had rented for years. Ostensibly he slept there, though he seldom used it, except as a convenient place for disguising himself, Hyland lit the gas, and turned toward the bed. At that instant a pair of eyes gleamed down upon the detective and his expect, ant companion from a dirt-begrimed transom above a door commuuioating with an adjoining apartment. They were the same evil Qrba&hat had -gT&rea IBroagn the library vtlBoow of the St, Cyr mansion in Calumet avenue the night of the great fire in the Exposition Building. fTO bi ooanxoKp.! Bow re Destroy Steth That household pest, the moth, we suppose, rejoices in the scientific name, iinea pellionella. It is not the small, delioate, silver-winged insect which eats little holes in our woolen garments, on the discovery ot which the female department of our households conclude to trade off our fifty-dollar winter suit for a pair ot seventy-flve-eent vases, but it is the moth worm hatched from the egg laid by this winged nuisanoe. On the coming of spring- and frequently thereafter woolen garments should be beaten and thoroughly brushed to dislodge the moths or any moths' eggs whioh may have been deposited in the folds of the cloth, and then jiung in hot sun and air for a day Or two,, Where garments will admit of it they should be ironed with a hot won, for that is certain destruction to the ?gg and larva of the moth. A hot flat-iron or tailor's goose oau also be used around the edges of most carpets. 'When possible, it is the best plan after a thorough brushing and ironing to put furs and woolen garments into paper bags. Camphor-wood and redcedar chests are very disagreeable to moths, and henoe are good receptacles for clothing, but these cannot readily be had. Oil of cedar poured on paper and then folded in other paper so aa not to grease garments will make any ordinary box moth-proof. These little packages of paper should be renewed every six or eight weeks. It is said by some that black pepper or whole cloves sprinkled among woolen clothes will prevent the moth from depositing its eggs, as will also small pieces of tallow wrapped in papers. The odors of carbolic acid, benzine and turpentine are all very offensive to the moth. Camphor, too, is beneficial in keeping the moth away, as it disagrees with it, but it must never be put near sealskin, as it is likely to change the ookw ot the fur. Closets lined with tar paper are said to banish moths. Tobacco is often used, but moths will eat garments whose pockets are full of tho weed. The moth is killed in a temperature of ISO degrees, and if garments can be placed in an oven heated to that temperature any larva, egg, and moth will be destroyed. It ia unnecessary, to say that a good housekeeper will kfll every moth she sees. A lady of experience in household matters says that there is nothing better than common salt sprinkled in closets and on shelves and all along the edges of carpets for destroying these pests, and we further have the word of a furrier to the effect that nothing is wholly dosi.uctivo oi this pest but a hot flauron. When the iron is very hot a damp cloth should be laid upon the garment ironed. This town is now full of these terrible insects, for they thrive in warm weather, and housekeepers who have not looked after their blankets and woolen garments of all kind may be shocked when they do so and see the damage which has been done. Constant vigilance is essential in keeping these peifo down to a minimum. Let every lady who reads this article look without delay at all the furs and woolen art tales in her house, brush them, iron them, and hang them in the sun and then put salt, common or rock, in the closets where they are kept; it can be so placed as not to come much in contact with the clothing. We shall be glad to print any further information relating to the destruction of the house moth if any citizen will furnish it. Next week we will deal with the small water bug called the cockroach. x. Facta About the Great Human Family. There are about 1,500,000,000 inhabitants on the globe. Of these 33,093,033 die every year. There are 3,064 languages and over 1,000 religions professed by the people. The number of males and females is about equal, and their average life is about 33 years; one-fourth of the inhabitants die before they reach their 15th year.
To 1,000 persons only one reaches the age of 1UU years; to every iw only six reach the age of 66, and not more than one in 500 lives to see the 80th year; 83,033,033 dying every year makes a grand total of 91,824 per day, 3,730 per hour, 60 a minute, or 1 every time the clock ticks! Married persons live longer than single ones, and the tall have a better chance for long life than those short of stature. Women have more balances of life in their favor pre' vious to 50 years of age than men have, but-, fewer afterwards. The number of marriages is in proportion of 75 to everj 1.00J. individuals bora; the time when the greatest number of marriages take place is in Juno auq December about the time of the sum. mer and the winter solstices. Darkhaired persons have a better chance in the great struggle for eristence than those of the opposite eompleuon, ex cept in contagious diseases, where blondes are comparatively exempt, a neraon born in hot weather utsnds the heat a great deal better than oho bora in the cold months of winter; ot course the' rule works vice versa. Those born io the spring are usually of a more robust constitution than if born at any other time of tho year, Births are more frequent by night than by day, also deaths. TBow They Keep Warm tn Montreal, I In Montreal one mar buy clothing
not to be had in the United States; woolens thick as boards, hosiery that wards off the cold as armor resists mis siles, gloves as heavy as shoes, yet soft as kid, fur caps and coats at prices and in a variety that interest poor and rioh alike, blanket suits that are mora picturesque than any other masouiine gar ment worn nortu of the city of Mexico, tuques, and moccasins, and, indeed, so many sorts of clothing we Yankees know very little of (though many of us need them) that at a glance we say the Montrealers are foreigners. Montreal ia the gayest oity on this continent, and x have often tnougnt tnat tne ciotnrag there is largely responsible for that con dition. A New Yorker disembarking in Mon treal in midwinter finds the place in hospitably oold, and wonde.'s how, as weu as way, any one uvea mere, x well remember standing years ago be side a toboggan slide, with my teeth chattering and my very marrow slowly concealing, when my attention was called to the fact that a dozen ruddycheeked, bright-eyed, laughing girls were grouped in snow that reached their knees. I asked a Canadian lady how that could be possible, and she answered with a list of the principal garments thoso girls were wearing. They bad two pairs of stockings under their shoes, and a pair of stockings over their shoes, with moccasins over them. They had so many woolen skirts that an American girl would not believe me if I gave the. number. They wore heavy dresses and buckskin jackets and blanket suits over all this. They had mittens over their gloves, and fur caps over tliiiir OELiittiwl nootto. Xt xa lnnorflr apitrnml wonderful that tbey should not heod the cold ; indeed it occurred to me that their bravery amid the terrors of tobogganing was no bravery at all, since a girl buried deep in the heart of such' a mass of woolens could scarcely expect damage if she fell from a steeple. When next I appeared out-of-doors I too was swathed in flannel, like a jewel in a box of plush, and from that time out Montrealiseemed, what it really is, the merriest of American capitals. Julian Ralph, in Barpet's Magazine. Dance of the Devil. A fantastic orgy was witnessed at tha town of Loongi, the capital of Bullom, west coast of Africa, by a party of officers from the West India regiment quartered at Sierra Leone. The people of Loongi are Mchamedans, but the dancing devil himself is a relio of not long departed paganism, and so also probably is the dance itself. It takes place ia the court yard of the chiefs premises, which is entered through a circular hut. The scene which presents itself to any one coming suddenly out of the darkness into toe noise and glare is decidedly uncanny, in the center of a circle which ails the court yard the devil, with an ortho dox tail, agreat crocodile's head, and long grass, looking like hair, depending irom his body and legs, and swaying as he moves, leaps, beating time with his feet to the beat ot the drums, while the old women, two deep, wail a ohant and strike their palms together in slow, rhythmical measure, those in the front row bowing down between each beat. The young men, in long robes and cape, wail with the women. Both are under vows, the dance being one of their rites. They look dazed to begin with, but gradually work themselves into a frenzy, and the black faces, the monotonous, wailing cry, the thrumming of the drums, the rattle of the slackers and tlie beat of the devil's feet as he springs up, crouches down and swings about, make a scene to snook tne quiet moon and stars and gladden Gehenna, North of Sierra Leone. Africa, is Mohainoaan,. South Pagan and the people have this devil, when Jreace iff declared between two native tribes the peace devil, who is fetish, comes leaping into the town, but if he stumbles or falls it is considered a bad omen and he is put to death for his pains. Bis dress h sacred) but his person is of no eonseqenoe. ; The SmolcebaU in War. In the sham fight at Portsmouth in honor of the Emperor William, an advancing; column was so affected by the fumes of the smokeball, which was used to raise a cloud of impenetrable ob scurity under which they could advance, that the men had to keep their hands to their noses to avoid suffocation. It is now proposed that the smokebaU slinu receive a lurtner development. It has occurred to some military men that instead of half suffocating their own troops, it would be better to follow the examplo of tho Ohinese pirates with their stinkpots, and asphyxiate the enemy. A Vienna scientist has accord ingly invented a bomb of such power and virulence tnat every one wno is within a certain radius of it when it ex plodes is rendered unconscious. De vices such as these would soon modify the art of war, and probably the next development will be an anti-aspnyxiat-ing bomb, whose fumes will neutralize those of the other. It is said that many years ago a scheme based on the throwing of poisonous gases over a tract of country was put before the War Office in England, for the purpose of devastating the country in the face of an invading army, but tne agency em ployed was so terrible in its effeots that it was not made public, ana was con signed to the secret records of the War Office.
