THB ATTITUDE OF THE O. O. P. TOWARD THE LABORERS. Xl all DnwH State Ticket and Deasoemtlo Oat aaat Tate aa4 We'U Wla. iKOlaJTAPOUS, Oct. la. "If i could reach every Republican (n Indiana with my voice," said Chairman Michcneo thd other day, "I would say to tliea that there waa but one thlhir botw?5h th6 Prty and ylctory next Month, and tuat waa the lack of Interest An their part; If they will go out and vote the victory will be ours. The drift is all In our favor, and we will get enough hew strength from various sources to win the most complete victory we have ever had, if the Republicans themselves will only go to the polls." This view of the case is coincided in by all those who have studied the situation. One thing is certain, the Republicans have sever had a brighter opportunity to win than just ow. Never before has a Congress so vindicated the wisdom of giving that body to the control of the Republicans; never has a party so completely kept the Died (fee it has made to the tmonle as the Republicans under this administra tion, i met at one.of the hotels, the other day, a prominent Republican who had visited many parts of the State. On asking htm What he thought of tho situ a' Won, he said he had found a a-ood deal of kicking here and there T. asked him kicklnv asainst vhat, against whom, and he said against the administration. I asked him what particular thing done by the administration was kicked about. After a considerable pause he said, the truth is he had not heard a single thing done unfavorably criticised, but that everywhere the party endorsed every act of Congress. Pushed a little farther he said that in fact he had not heard of any kicking, Only that kicking: was beiim done, fie further said that the State ticket and platform was unlvoraally approved and that if there was an; discon tent anywhere tt was only against the rresiaent personally, necanse be bad not given some one an office, but It was not against the party. This tells the whole story. The Republicans have never had so complete an arsenal of good deeds done v ith which to go before the people than Just now, 'and since the days of the war the Democrats have never been in as bad a shape to appeal to the people as at the present time. They have nothing good to show, but their whole administration has been bad, and nothing in it to recommend thorn to the uonest'pari of the community. . In State affairs they nave been incom petent, wasteful, reckless of every interest except that of making places for party henchmen. In Congress they have only been obstructionists, offering noth ing good tnemsetves, but only trying to prevent the Republicans from accomplishing what the people have demanded at their hands. In counties and municipalities, where they have- had. control, they have always taxed the people to the very utmost, and honesty and good government has not been found among them anywhere. They have been for the party always for the people1' never. They have been loud in their professions in their platforms and on the stump, but their actions have not been in harmony with their promises. Thus the Republicans have much the advantage of them in a discussion before the people. They enicted laws under pretense of shutting -out bribery of voters, and yet in thii county their local candidates nave pouted out money like water with the Intont of corrupting the voters. They passed laws they -claimed would insure an honest ballot, yet their leaders have been industriously schooling their henchmen in the ways of corrupting the ballot in despite of the law. In their boasting! before the people they are now reduced down to two things done by the last general assembly letting a contract for school books and the election laws. InJ. mmi Bret TH6y aia net ga xxt euoagur i Indianna is great enough and rich enough to supply books to toe children free. In the last they made the law so cumberin some of its provisions and so vague in others that it will cost the peo ple an enormous mm 01 money and Tail la accomplishing what the people have desired. No party was ever before so closely in sympathy with the industrial classes as the Republican party of to-day. Thai ft is honest In Its professions in this re gard is shown by Its acts. The present Congress has done more for labor than all other congresses combined. It has done more for agriculture. It has done more to build up for the country a trad with foreign lands that tbe people might have a market for all their surplus. li nas done more for the old veterans. And any measure looking toward any of those ends' was either opposed by the votes oi the Democrats or by their obstrucuvi policy. They pretended to.be tat favor of the de mands of the agriculturists but in Con gress sought to defeat all legislation In their Interest.' So it was with everything that was proposed for the benefit of the people. The Republicans were found working earnestly and honestly In their favor, the Democrats vehemently opposing them. No Republican can afford to remain away from the polls thii year. Nicoskxcb. It will be seen that the Bepublieani not only endorse all that has been done, but declare that they are in favor oi going still farther, and specifically state in the last clause tcwhat extent they are in favor of more liberal measures. Let the soldiers of Indiana contrast th declarations of tbe two parties and their records and then decide to which, party their allegiance should be given. It should never be possible for the 'Wail street speculators to use the Secretary of the Treasury for the promotion of their schenes, and. it will never be possible for tacm to do so while Mr. Windom remSlns in that office, ' The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, in reply to a question in the House of Deputies in regard to the action the Preach government had taken about the McKInley bill, stated that the French Chamber of Commerce had addressed a formal complaint to him which induced him to consult the various governments of .Europe with a view to taking common action in the- matter. He had, however, "found a general anwillingto sake up the matter." Iy tbe Republicans turn out and vote in' November, the victory will be ours. It is always safe to conclude that a measure which displeases the free traders, as the new tariff bill does, must have in It the promise and potency of good results for the American, people, however unfriendly tt may be to foreign interests. Tarn McKInley bill is tbe declaration of our industrial independence. Great Britain Mkes it as little as she did out declaration of political independence. But we are not legislating for Great Britain. IfoU andExprest, ' It is thought Sardou will come to America with Swab . Bernhardt nsxt January. , . AWFUL LOSS OF LIFE.
MANY PEOPLE BURNED TO DEATH AT SYRACUSE, N. Y. The Oreat Xeland Hotel Wiped Out by the names From Twenty-five to Fifty l'aroons Meat Death In Ota Hunting aiwUdJof-'-Haw tile Fire Originated. Syracuse dispatch. FMm twouty-flvo to fifty livos wart lost early this morning by tho burning of the Inland Hotel here, the largest hotel in Contra) Now York. Tho building will prove a total loss. An byo wit' ness says that lie saw twenty-five people lose their lives in attempting to escape, and a guest who narrowly escaped death says that fully twice that number havd perished In tlid burning building. Tho tiro started a few mlmitos after 1 o'clock this morning, and almost Instantly the largo structure was cnvelopod in flames from cellar to roof. Every effort was made to arouse the sleeping guests, but the smoke in the halls was so dense that It was found impossible to roach tho upper floors, and it is boliovod many persons were suffocated and their bodies burned. A number of people Jumped from Windows and wero killed or injured. The flro started in the kitehen near the elevator, and shot up tho shaft with al most incredible rapidity to the sixth story and burst through tho roof. Ail the fire engines of the city were quickly upon tho scone, but tho fire continued to gain headway, and it soon became apparent that the building would bo destroyed. The firemen worked heroically to save the inmates of tbe hotel, and a number were- dragged unconscious from the first, second, and third stories, above which tho rescuers could not ascend on account of the dense smoke which filled tho upper stories. The scene was one of the wildest confusion. Pooplo were seen at tho windows on every floor, shrieking frantically for help, which could not bo given thorn. Many foil back into tho flames, fainting and exhausted, while others hurled themselves from the windows, meeting Instant death on' tho pavement. Many who escaped from the lower stories will die from tho effects of fioir injuries, occasioned by the flames and portions of the falling walls. How many -victims perished will not be known until the flro has. spent its force and the debris has been cleared away. Indications, however, are that at least fifty persons havo lost their lives, and probably a much larger number. Tho hotel was well filled with guests, and though many escaped, it scorns almost certain that tho loss of life has been very large. Five bodies partially hiddon by bricks are lying in tho alley, but cannot bo reached, owing to tho intense heat.' Two of the vicjmnwere women, and are supposed frdn&tho location of tho bodies to have been -domestics who jumped from their dormitory on tho sixth floor. One woman was being lowered from a window by the aid of a rope and had reached a point opposite tho third story when the rope became ignited from a burning sill. The ropo parted and tho woman fell to the pavement. Her brains were dashed out and her body flattened into a shapeless mass. So great is the confusion and excitement that tho indontity of those killed and injured cannot be ascertained. Undertakers and ambulances are flying in all- directions, and tho streets in the neighborhood of the ill-fated hotel are thronged with excited crowds of people. Every physician in the city is on the scene, and the wounded are being cared for as well as possible. Among those injured is Cora Tanner, the actress, who was severely burned about the head and feet. She was playing an engagement at tho Grand Opera Honse and had a room in tho hotel. Frank Casoy of Glens Falls, N. Y-, and Emil Forbes, a prominent brewer of Syracuse, are among the dead. Many lives were lost by people crazed with fright jumping from window's. One man says he saw six people jump from different windows on the Fayette t1'" D?i1iH"T a space of four minutes, and the sight sickened him with its horror, and he was compelled to leave tho spot. Tho building was provided with both iron fire escapes on the outsido and ropes oh the inside, which were tho moans of saving many lives. Burnet Forbes, a stock-broker, escaped into the street almost naked. He was slightly injured about the banos. He loses a gold watch valued at $500 and all his clothing. One woman iv.-t fcund with a nursing babe in her arms crouched in a stairway, where she had been overcome by smoke. Sho was removed by the firemen, but has not yet regained- consciousness, and it is Impossible to say what her name or experience was. Escape by the stairways was cut off, and those in the upaer stories were compelled to jump. The clerk of the hotel began sounding in the alarm ' by telephone, but the flames spread so rapidly that he was driven from the Instrument and compelled to jump to save his own life. Nothing is left of tho building except the elevator shaft and tho chimney. The New York Central Depot, which is across the street from the hotel, was in great danger, but was finally savod. The loss will exceed half a million dollars. This covers tho hotel and furniture, the stores on the first floor and their stocks. The insurance will probably bo about one-half the amount of the loss. The hotel was one of tho finest in Central Now York. It stood on ono of the most prominent corners of the city, and was well known to the traveling pnblic of tho United States. There wore 400 rooms in tho houso, and, owing to its convenient location as regards tho railroad depot, It had always been filled with guests. Tho New. York Central Railroad's station adjoined tho hotel. Recently all tho rooms and parlors of the houso wero redecorated and renovated. Elegant furniture was put in, and tho entire hotel given a practically new appearance. It was a six-story structure built of stone, brick, and iron. There was an entrance on each corner. Running along tho two street sides between the entrances were a number of stores. A restaurant waa attached to tho hotel. All the rooms were steam-heated. The caravansary was owned by Warron Iceland, Jr., A Co. Items of Interent, Beruit drank in 1869 200,347,100 quarts of beer that is abo.it 150 quarts to every man, woman, and child. "Certainly." We replied in chorus. "So do I on certain occasions. This isn't one of the occasions, however." We asked him to explain, but he told us to wait until we were off. When that time came he said: "The ticket agent made a mistake of just $4 in my ease, and I think it is all right to beat him. Tbe agent in Cincinnati once beat me out of $5, so I am hardly even." LINCOLN'S MELANCHOLY. His Sympathetic Nature and Ills early Misfortunes, Those who saw much of Abraham Lincoln during tbe later years of his Ilfo wore greatly impressed with the expression of profound melancholy his face always wore in repose. Mr. Lincoln waa of a peculiarly sympathetic and kindly nat iro. Theso strong characteristics ' Influenced, very happily, as it proved, his entire political career. They would not seem, at first glance, to bo efficient aids to political success; but In the peculiar emergency which Lincoln, in the providonco of Clod, was called upon to meet, no vessel ot common clay could possibly have becomo tho "chosen of the Lord." Those acquainted with hlra from boyhood know that early griefs tiugod bis wholo life with sadness. Ills partner in tho grocery business at Salem was "Uuclo" Billy Green( of Tallula, 111., wlib used at night, when the customers were few, to hold the grammar while Lincoln rocked his lessons. It was to his sympathetic ear Lincoln told
the story or his love r r sweet Ann Km nugo; and he in return, offered what comfort ho could when poor Ann died, and Lincoln's great heart nearly broke. "After Ann died," says Tncle Billy, on stormy nights when tbe wind blow the rain against the roof, Abo would sot tlnir in tho grocery, hts elbows on his knees, his fnco In his hands, and tho tears runnln' through his angers. I hated to see him feel bad, an' I'd say, 'Abe don't cry;' an' he'd look up an' say, I can't help it, Bill, the rain's a f tvllin' on her.' Thore are many who can sympathize with this overpowering grlof, as they think of a lost loved ono, when "tho rain's a fallin' on her." What adds poignancy to tho grief some times is tho thought that the lost ono might havo been saved. Fortunate, lndoed, is William Johnson, of Corona, L. I., a builder, who writes June S8, 1800s "Last February, on returning from church ono night, my daughter complained of having a pain In her ankle. The pain gradually extended until her entire limb was swollen and very painful to the touch. We called a physician, who, after careful examination, pronounced it disease of the kidneys of long standing. All wo could do did not seem to benefit her until we tried Warner's Safe Cure; from the first she commenced to improve. When sho commenced taking it she could not turn over in bed, and could just move her hands a little, but to-day she Is as well as she ever was. "I'm glad of that," said Mr. Greely. Said Mr. Hhoades: "Who do you think it is?" "Oh, I have no idea." "It is your boy David." "What! my little David?" "Yes your 'little. David. Ho's the one who's been a-robbing, and I've got iuro up at the Tombs now. "Well," said Horace Greeley, "I'm so sorry. I have oiten seen tbat poor boy steal my booksi, but I did not like to say anything about it" "It is not intellectual work that injures the brain," says the London Hospital, "but emotional excitement. Most men can stand the severest thought and study of which their brains are capable, and be none the worse for it; for neither thought nor study interferes with the recuperative influence of sleep.
