tending the commencement of his Alma Mater." By reference to bis sworn statement of Septemher,1888, we find that be charged the coanty 93 for his services as Superintendent for one half of Aug. 3d, 1888, la the Telephone of Tuesday, March iSth 1889, we notice the following: "John Craven spent Sunday with his parents at Center Valley, Hendricks county. " And by reference to his sworn statement filed June, 1S89, we find that he charged S8 for full days a. Super intendent on March 16th and 18th, the days be would necessarily have occupied ia traveling to and from tteodricka eonuty ie order to spend Sunday there. In the Courier of August 3d, 188o,- is tbe following: . "j. W. Craven attended the Normal Commencement at Danville, Wednesday.0 And by reference to his sworn statement of Spptember,188g, we notice that he charged the county $4 for that day as well as epery one of the six days in that toeeb. In tbe Courier of August 17th, 1889, we notice the following: "J. W. Craven was at Danville on business Thursday." And by reference to his sworn statement we find that he charged the county 84 for that day as well as every one of the txx atop t mat weet. These ere a few items we have been abb) to gather from the county press, and how many times this may have occurred of which the press have made no mention, we are. unable to say. It will be remembered that dur ing tbe campaigns of 1st 6 and 1888 Mr. Craven was Secretary of tbe Democratic Central Commiruo of Monroe coanty. Those who remember these campaigns will re call the activity ami energy Mr. Graven djaputyed in the performance of bis duties as such Secretary. His duties were very laborious and necessarily consumed a great deal of bia time with correspondence. bill postine. entertainment of speakers, and such other work as ail Secretaries of central committees are eallad upon to do. Any one never having served in such a capacity cannot conceive of the great amount of labor and time a secretary must sacrifice for the love of bis party. That Mr. Craven made a good secretary no one will dray. But did he fail to charge his regular per diem during all that tirarf An examination of the records will show, as they are public property. We do not find fault with Mr. Craven acting as Secretary of the Democratic Central Committee, but it be does, tbe Democratic party should pay mm for bis time and work and pay him welL The following are the dates of a fee? Democratic conventions: March 10th, 1888, Bloomington township convention. Cravens acted as Secretary. September 1st, 1888, Democratic county convention Craven instructed Secretaries in their dutiea. April 12th, 1890, Democratic Mass Meeting. ' By reference te Mr. Cravens sworn statement of one, 1888, we find he charged the county 54 for March 10th, 1888. By reference to bis sworn statement of September, 1888, we find he charged tbe county 84 for Septem ber 1st, 188& By reference to his sworn statement ot jpuue, issij, we and ne charged the county tor April 12, 1890. Don't know whether he served the county those days or not. He may answer. The last township election was held 00 tbe 7th day of April, 1890. It was at this election that John D. Morgan made the race lor Trustee on the Democratic ticket in Bloomington township. No man was more solicitous about tbe result and worked harder for the election of Mr. Morgan than did John W. Craven; and. yet we find by refer ence to his sworn statement of June, I80O, that he charged the county $4 for his services s Superintend ent on that day. . In I joking over Mr. Cravens' sworn ttniemaita we find that he charged 84 per day for Thanksgiving Days in 1887 and 1888 and for the Fourth days of July in 1887 and 188oi How much work be performed on these publie holidays, while other people weie at rest, we do not Knew. Tbe lnrt but not the least signi ficant of all tbe davs for which be has charged are the "Decoration Davs." In 1888 he charged for a half day, and iu I880 a full day. This day iireaeh year is set apart m a publi-; holiday, wlicu ail men,
$1 25. as ueaoqnaners tor aiemum 1 m - . . of Suits for Business 3 o is sew auu immense. us 3 df every party, are called upon by public sentiment to cease their work and honor the dead heroes of the late war. All men who love tbe soldiers, their widows and their orphans, greet with ioy each recurrence of Decoration Day, and gladly lay aside their work for one day in order that they may pay their tribute to the fond memories of the Nation's dead. We would at least expect that one who holds a high office in our county and who feeds from tho public crib one who draws his 94 per day regularly from the county treasury, a part ot which is placed there from the hard earnings of diseased and crippled soldiers and who set 8 himself op as a model aod example to ti e youth of our county, would, out of mere respect for tbe dead if not for love of them, lay. down bis pen and close his office door on that boly day and join in that long procession of old soldiers, the widows and orphans, which each year finds its way to the graves of the heroic dead. It seems that he might for one day at least gather a rose and drop it on tbe grave of some dead hero who helped to make it possible for him to hold such a lucrative position in a Government like ours. Will the soldiers vote for a man who pursues his usual avocation on this sacred day and charges the coanty 84 for it ? The Democrats, two years aeo, bad two United States Marshals appointed to look after tbe polls here. They were a man named Murphy and also one Groves. 'The Murphy j Republic taosWnobTSTie were not afraid of beine molested as they intended to "track the law." Now the Chairman of the Central Committee has authorised the ap pointment of . Marshals for the elections in November, and the "Courier" gets up on its hind legs and howls pitifully. Don't like to take your own medicine, do you, Mr. Conner 7 The Democrats of Indianapolis are bringing out that rusty old story about the Republicans colonising 20,000 negroes from some southern State to Indiana to vote the ticket this fall.- The Deminys must be hatching up. some new scheme, and are trying to divert attention from it. Judge Duncan, we learn, is producing the same favorable impression at Bedford that resulted here from his manner of discharging the duties of his office.. He has been on hand early and late, and has permitted no unnecessary delays. This is qnite satisfactory to both litigants and tax-payers, and will make him doubly popular. Mr. Cravens' HypocrlsyThe Vlemres lor II. The Clerk's office has yielded about $2,000 per year during Mr. Fuller's, term. An tbe umner Mr. Craven fieures that Fuller's fees were 300 per cent, too high, -on the . average, which means three-fold. Thus he oraotically proposes to run the office for one-fourth of that amount, or f 500. Allowing onefourth for fees that cannot be collected, and it leaves biro. $375 per annum for his compensation, sup pose that he can employ a compe tent denutv for 1600 per annum, which is improbable, and you leave him S225 in debt. 'As Mr. uiavea sets about SI .200 per year out of the Superintendent's office, does any one believe that his professions are sincere T A man who tries to gull the people with such propositions must be regarded by all thoughtful men with some degree of suspicion. Says the Martinsville Repub lican: Samuel Walliueford Jr., of Bloomington, drove twenty young mules from his farm in Monroe couuty, to W. h. Moore's farm, near Waverly, yesterday. nal lingford is an extensive mule raiser. He bas five hundred left on bis farm, and bus just shipped to Frank Lander's place, near Brooklyn, three hundred. He buys mules in all parts of Iodiana. Illinois and Missouri. Fred. Nance, the well known horse buyer for Black Bros, of Grecncastle, died snddsnly Satur day evening a week at bis home near Brazil. His death ia attributed to heart disease. Mr. Nance took a lot of horses to Greeacastle only the day before his death.
