X two o'clock in the morning daring the mown oi August sounds of music could be heard pmeeedbur from a bril. liantly liRhted house in Park un. where a iDau was oeing giren oy the Countess of Kerstoke. True, the season was long since over, and though the greater part oi Jbon'loa society naanugratea swallowlike to the south of Europe in search of warm weather, still there were enonjrh people in town to justify the ball being giren, and a number of celebrities were present. Ontsid it was dull end chilly, with a uuekyeuow log porracung tne armosnherc. but within the ball-room it was like tain-land with the brilliant light of the lampa, the profunion of bright flowers, and. the gay dnsses worn by tie ladies.' The oreheatta, hidden behind a gorgeous screen of tropical plants, was playing the latest watts, A Friend of Mine, ana the sigh and sob of- the melody as it stole softly through the room seemed to iusnim the dancers with voluptuous ton gue as they glided over the polished car. xne son xraa-xroa oi women's dresses mingled with the light laughter of young gins and the whispered confldssaoM of their partners, while over all dominated the haunting melody with its weird modalations and suggastfanui of Sear the door of the ball-room a young an of about thirty Years of a was leanagainstthe wall ta a lasy attitude, watehing the dancers swinainRpast him: but tadmng from the preoccupied azpreaaion of his face his thoughts were evklaatly far away. He was tall, darkhaired, with a snort out, well-trimmed beard, piercing dark eyes, a firmly compressed mOutn, and, judging from his swarthy complexion together with a cartain snap end in his hair, he evidently had some negro blood in his veins. Suddenly he was aroused from his meditations by a touch on his shoulder, and on gUneing up saw before him a stout elderly genneman with white hair, a ruddy face, and rather a Silenus oast of oonnThe one) was Spenser E Hereby, only son of a wealthy West Indian planter, and the other Horace Msrton, a well-known society man generally called Tne Town Crier, from the fact that he knew all the current scandals and retailed them with elaborate embellishments to his numerous oirolc of friends. "Hey! Barsby,my boy, said The Town Crier, on the alert to acquire new information, "have you come back once more to England, home and beauty hey? Been all over the world, I suppose, hey? Oeing to publish a book of travels, hey?" lfot me," replied EUersby, in the slow, languid manner haoitual to him: "everv one who goes a half a dozen miles nowadays publishea a book of .travels under some fantastio title. " tw was an occupation alter xne Town Crier's own heart, so he launched out into a loeg description of folly and fashion, varied by sermons and scandal, Which, being spiced with a little maliciousness, proven quite an amusing discourse. EUersby listened in silence with a quiet smile on his lips, every now and then giving vent to an ejaculation as ha heard some special morsel ox news, Tou ought to write your memoirs. Mar ten," he said, dryly; "they would be as gossiping as Pepys, as scandalous as De Qranunont; and as amusing as either, but go on anything mom? who are the new beauties?6 Her! oh! one was hen to-night. "That's what every one wants to know," replied Marton, eagerly; "he picked her up down in the country somewhere, but she's got no pedigree no money, no talents nothing but personal beauty." " Which is worth all the rest pnt together to a woman," interrupted EUersby cynicBirr, wnas is sue uxer The Town Crier reeled off an auctioneer like description of her at once. "Tall, fair, blue eves, beautiful com plexion, magnificent ugure, and the devilVi own temper.' "Nice set of qualifications, especially the totter," murmured Ellersby, "Bals combe rood of Mr? "Eh! the deuce I thought he was in ove with old Balscombe'a ward, Miss rsano."So he to but he makes love to the wife, just to keep his hand in. I wouldn't bo surprised if it ended in the divorce court. "Well, you are generally right in your surmise.1" retorted Ellersby: "but what would Miss Penfold say to thai?" "Hey! oh, she'd be glad," replied Marton; "bless you, she cares more for Hyles Desmond's little finger than she does for the whole body of Calliston." "Ob, I knew Myles," said Ellersby, promptly; "n rattling good fellow, was with him at Cambridge, but we somehow never hit it off trying to make a fortune by bis pen, I hear." "Yes! and hasn't made a penny yet, so be acta as secretary to his cousin, Lord Calliston. He's next heir to the title, you know, hey?" "XwA chance hell hayo of it," replied EUersby, contemptuously. "Oalliston's sure t marry and have heirs, unless he kills himself in the meantime with drink but to revert to our former conversation the Balscombe menage seams slightly mixed.'' "Hey! rather. It stands this way," explained Marton. eagerly; "Balscombe's jealous of Us wife on account of Calliston, Lady B. is jealous of Calliston on account of Miss Penfold, and that young lady does not care two straws for the whole lot of them in comparison to Myles Desmond. "Hounds like the second act of a Ptonobptoy, murmured Ellersby, yawntog, "Well, when I see Lady Balscombe I'll give you an opinion of her looks; meantim) you must be dry after all that talking, so come and hare a drink." . "Wnere are you stopping?" asked Marton, as they went to tne supper-room. "Goelpb Hotel, Jermyn street," said Ellersby, "only for a few days till I get my rooms fixed up; I've brought such a tot of things home that my ob ambers look like an old curiosity shop. .What are you bating?" "Champagne," replied Marlon. "Oh, I say, aesc boy feeing his companion witn
a small glass fall of brandy, "that looks bad at this hour! Hev. vou haven't"
"No, I haven't," interrupted Ellersby, impatiently; Tm only taking this tonight because I don't feel up to tht mark," Marton said no more, but after parting with his companion went back to the ball-room, and, meeting a friend, confided to him that Ellersby was going to the uogs sniougn anna. "Brandy neat, dear boy, hey 1" said tht old reprobate. "Bad habits these young fellows pick up abroad, hey! Looks used up, by Jove. Gal in it, dear boy, h!yl oh, shocking!" So The Town Crier evidently did not intend to give the returned wandwier good character. Ellersby was now tired of the ball, so bade good-night to his hostess, who vras a queer, uun nine woman, wearing a wig, a low-cut dress, and many jewels, giving one the general impression that she was mostly bones and diamonds. After taking leave of this bieane figure Ellersby put on'his coat and went outside into tne street, wnere ne stood tor a lew minutes, undecided whether to take a cab to his hotel or to walk. The fog was very thick, and the gas lamps shone through it like dull yellow stars, whils the chill breezes of the night seemed t penetrate the body of the young man, accustomed as he had been of late to tropical climates. In spite of the apparent discomforts offered by a walk at such a time, Ellersby determined to risk it, thinking it would give him a eertain amount of amusement, akin somewhat to the unraveling of a JuezIq, to find his way through the fog to ermyn street. Smiling at the oddity of the idea of finding pleasure in a cool walk on a foggy night, ne lighted a cigar, and, buttoning up his coat, -took his way down X. . - ,AI . . . . - i tn it una kiwoiu jr iocauuiy. There is a strange feeling in the com plete isolation one experiences in fog-land the thick yellow mist hiding eyeTrhingunder its jealous veu until tne pedestrian finds himself adrift, as it were, on a lonely sea, and though on every side he is environed by millions of human beings, yet the fog creates for the moment a solitude as in those enchanting cities of the Arabian Nights. Ellersby managed' to find his way to Piccadilly, and was soon swinging along the pavement at a good round paoe. Every now ana tnen ragged figures witn sinister faces would come suddenly out of the fog on the watch for unwary wanderers, but the nomadic life of Ellersby having wonderfully sharpened his faculties, he was always on his guard against the evil advances of these night-birds. Occasionally he could hear a cab drive slowly past, the driver cautiously steering his horse down the familiar street, which, as if by magic, had suddenly assumed an unreal appearance, transforming Piooadilly into a vague immensity resembling the steppes of Russia. With his ears alert for every sound, and his eyes peering anxiously into the veil of gray mist, Ellersby hurried along, managed to cross the street, and by some miracle of dexterity, whioh he placed at once to the credit of instinct, turned down St. James street, and it was here his first mishap occurred, for just as' be rounded the comer he came against a young man hastening in the opposite direction at a rapid pace. I beg your pardon, said the stranger quickly, but the fog is so dense I could not see excuse me. And he was about to hurry away when Ellersby, recognising the voice, stopped him. Wait a moment. Desmond, he said. gayly, "and give an old friend a word." Desmond seemed annoyed at being recognised, and looking sharply at the face of the other, gave vent to an ejaculation of surprise, whioh, however, had not a very delighted ring in it. "Ellersby, by Jove"!" he said, in a hesitating manner, "I thought you were in Persia or in Patagonia. Who the deuce would have expected to see you in Piccadilly on such a devil of a night?" "I've been to a ball " explained Ellersby, "and thought I'd walk back to my hotel just to renew my acquaintance with Xionaon logs, it was a maa ireajc, out amusing. Come to my hotel and have . a nightcap." xnanxa, awfully, said JJesmona, curriedly.but I can't. I'm Tm in a hurry. Where an you stopping?" uuelpn Hotel, J ermyn street. "Ehl" said Desmond, with" a start. "Jermyn street all right; look you up to morrow. "Wait a moment," observed Ellersby. detaining him. "Tell me, where is Calliston? I want to see him. " "Not much chance, replied Desmond. shaking his head. "He's gone off tonight down to Shoreham yachting, you know. Wants to go to the Azores; well, will see you to-morrow; good night i n in a deuce of a hurry." He spoke rapidly, with nerrous agitation auite at variance with his usual de meanor, as Ellersby knew, and as he went off quickly and was swallowed up by the fog, the latter resumed his walk with a quiet laugh. "A woman, I bet," he said to himself, as he made his way cautiously along. "Fancy Venus on such a disoourasing night as this the rosy mists enveloping me goaaess are cnarming, out a juonaon ah, pawla stood on the pavement, wondering how ho could strike Jermyn street, and was about to attempt to cross on a chance ofhiB luok guiding him when the tall form of a policeman loomed out of the tog ana nasnea tne ligoc or a lantern on him. Ah, Inst in' time, policeman," said Ellersby, to a relieved tone. "I've got slightly astray in this fog, so you must guide me to the Onelph Hotel. "Just across the street, sir, "replied the policeman, touching his helmet, and he stepped off the pavement, followed by Ellersby. They soon got into Jermyn street and went along the left-hand side toward the hotel. Though the fog was still thick, Ellersby in the vanity of his heart thought he could now find tne way for himself. He gave the policeman half a-orown, and going along a few yards, went up what he supposed was the step of the hotel. The policeman stood in the same place, ready to render his services as a guide, should he be required, when suddenly ha was startled by a cry from Ellersby. The young man had gone up the wrong steps, and was standing on the top when the policeman hurried up, while at his feet was a bundle of what looked like clothes. "I say, polioeman,"said EUersby, in an. agitated tone, "here is a woman I believe she's dead." "Dead drunk, more like, sir," replied the policeman, ekeptieaUy, ascending the steps. "No," said EUersby, "I have shaken her and she will not waken. Her face to quite cold-just took!" The policeman, somewhat startled out of Us professional phlegm, turned the light down on the figure of the woman, which was lying in the doorway. It was that of a female with a fair face and golden hair, dressed in a long sealskin jacket and a silk dress, with a fashionably shaped hat on her head. Her well-gloved hands were tightly clinohed and her eyes, wide open, were staring straight np at the horrified discoverers. There did not seem to be any wound or blood about, but her face was swollen and appeared to bo of a dark purple color, with the tongue slightly protruding between the teeth. It was not by any means a pleasant sight, and both men felt a sensation of horror as they looked at the body. "She's dead, sure enough, sir," said the policeman at length, and blew s whistle. To this call there was an answer, and soon another policeman made his appearance. "Bhe looks as if she had been strangled, "said EUersby, who was much upset by the discovery; her face is so purple and her tongue protruding." The first poitoeman bent down and looked at the neck of the corpse, but could see no marks of violence, so he shook his head. "Don't know sir," he answered. "It look a queer sort of case. Well take the body to the hospital and see what the doctors say." In the meantime the other policeman had gone for aid, and in a few minutes two more made their appearance with a stretcher, upon which the body was placed and taken to the nearest hospital. In accordance with a request made by the polioaman, EUersby gave his oard, St. that he could be called on to appeal' at the inquest, and then went to the Guelph Hotel, whioh was only a short 'distance np the street. 10 OQHIWDSIl.

Catching a Slaver. Letters from the Blast India station give particulars of an important capture of aslavedhow made a few weeks ago by Her Majesty's steamer Eeindeer, says the London Daily Newt. One of her boats, in charge of a petty officer, was proceeding into Ouakichaki Bay, in the island of Pemba, when a dhow was observed making for the inner harbor. The officer immediately boarded her and was surprised fo find that although the dhow was a small one a large numler of slaves were -packed into tor, like herrings in a barrel so crowded, in fact, was tho craft that the officer was unable to count the slaves accurately, nd he at once towed the dhow toward the Reindeer. The slaves and crew were transferred to her Majesty's steamer Pigeon and the dhow was sent to Bombay, where she was banded over to the court. It was then discovered that the vessel had on board no fewer than 124 slaves. The inquiry, before the prize court elicited the information that the dhow left Lindi with the slaves on lward, the master having been promised 10 rupees a head for every slave landed alive at Pemba. During his voyage he passed three of Her Maiestv's ships the Alger-

The dhow hr.s beeD destroyed by order of the court, her captai.n and crew are in prison, and an amount calculated at 5 a head for the slaves and 5 a ton for the dhow will be divided among the commander, the officers, and men of tha Reindeer. Krum, was then Mayor of Alton, and he came to St. Louis with a committee of citizens to invito the statesman to favor Alton with a visit. He consented, and arrangements were made to give him a fitting welcome. "Alton did not possess a cannon, bat to meet this emergenoy my lather had, with much prudent care and forethought, had a large hole drilled in the bluff on tho bank of the Mississippi, into which four kegs of powder were poured and well tamped. When the steamboat with the great orator and a distinguished party on board arrived at the Alton wharf a man stationed on the bluff fired the fuse and a tremendous explosion followed, making a noise that could be heard many miles and dislodging many tons of rock and earth. This was the heaviest and biggest gun fired off in honor of Daniel Webster on his whole Western tour." St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Proteet the System from Malaria. Physicians have not been among the last to concede its merits, and the emphatic professional indorsements which it has received have added to tbo reputation it baa obtained at home and abroad. The Fishes' Dinner Bell. Not far from Berlin is Charlottenbnrg, where there is a great palace with Splendid garden. The German fathers and mothors take their little ones to see a wonderful sight in these gardens, through which winds the Biver Spree. Now, in this river is a quantity of carp, and it is to see them fed and feed them, that the little Heinricha and Gretohens love to go to Charlottenburg. These carp are very aged, some of them, and as cunning as possible; for when a bell rings they all come rushing in shoals, knowing well that it is their own dinner bell; and they are never disappointed, for the public delights in feeding them.
