Mr. Cha. Brigham, superintendent of W. B. Burford'a litho
graphing establishment, Indiana polis, came to Bloomington with the remains of . John Graham last Thuradsy afternoon, seat by tbe Lwdkre of Masons to which Graham belonged in the capital city, Mr. Brigham is a well preserved . man, in the evident enioyment of good health, and as popular among his associates as in the days of yore. In 1856-7 tbe Progress proprietor and Mr. urigbam were employed in the printing office of Cameron A MoNeely, situated then in a building in the rear of Cox's stove store, midway between the corner of Meridian street and Burford's present office, where at the same time were employed Ham. McNeely, Charley and Tom Werner, Samuel Douglass, Aleck Stevens, Wni. Meredith,. Joe Dillon aod several other old and now almost forgotten printers. Of the eight or ten men rvho at that time "emptied their sticks" under the same roof, but three are known to be .-alive : Meredith?' whd is" Government Printer, Brigham and the Progress msn-, shining examples of the preservative effect of pious li ves. The few hours spent with Brigham while in town had a tendency to revive old memories and bring to mind many pleasant incidents of the days when Charley iSaymiiler wrote satires on society events, and Capt. Bracken put in his time whittling and telling stories in the Sentinel office composing . room while be pretended to be doing local work, There ia a movement on foot to inaugurate early closing among the merchants of onr city, and it ought to meet with encouragement from business men as well as from natrons.- The old fogy custom.atill prevails here of opening stores at 7 o'clock in tbe morning, and in some instances even at en earlier hour, and the lights are not turned out till 9 p. nt. usually, and ten - or eleven o'clock will sometimes find them in full blast. A half hour is given usually for a hurried meal at noon , and at 6 o'olock, and by this custom, (which no. longer prevails in towns of any size and claims1 to progress) proprietors of stores, as well as their employee, are -com celled to slay in- their places of business from 14 to ltf hours, day after day. There ore business men io Bloomington wbo have but little time to get acquainted -With their families never being with them during the hours the children are awake except on Sunday. It will be a very easy matte? to educat the people to understood that exeepVew&tnrday nighty perhaps, they must do their trading by 6 or 7 c clock, lbe night trade has (alien off very perceptibly in the pa.it two or three years, anyhow, and aside from the fact that they afford good loafing places for some of the proprietors and their friends, many places, of business might just tie well be cloned at night. The wives would then see more of their husbands, the children would receive more attention, and it would be better for all concerned. Don't you think so ? There is talk of laying out the Labertew land, (north College Avenue) into building lots and placing it on the market. If this is done and it is likely to be done and lbe town continues ta grow to the north and west, as it is now doing, business will brek away from the public square aod extend north on College Avenue. Tbat is the tendency now, as there are no vacant rooms on the public square, and the weight of population is naturally drifting northwest. Thai growth of the city east has been checked by the Dunn farm, people don't take readily to lots south and southwest, and as the city is growing, it most go north. Over one hundred acres will be included in tbe ground that it is proposed to plat, and it will thus be seen that a considerable additional population will be provided lor. - The final closing up of the contract for furnishing stone to the contractor who is to build the Rich-1 mond (Wayne co.) court bouse, is a source of congratulation to the stone quarry people of this county, because the Big Creek-quarry company of Stineavilie will furnish the stone, which will cost about f 16000 and make 400 car loads. One reason for congratulation aside from the fact that our home people will receive the benefit, is the fact that this contract is secured in a territory heretofore almost exclusively supplied by Ohio sandstone quarries, and the pressure brought to bear by these corporations to keep out our oolitic limestone waa very great. After this building is up, however, aod tbe beauty and durability of Monroe county, Indiana stone is demonstrated aud understood, it will be less difficult to ptape it in public buildings in the sandstone territory. Every citizen should feel gratified at the result. The well known Chicago merchant, E. J. Lohruatio, proprietor of "The Fair," was declared no Friday last by a jury, to be a distracted person. Mr, Lehmaon'a wife was appointed conservator ot his $2,500,000 estate. Mr. Lehmann is now in Bloomingdsle asylum, New York. The insaoity had covered a period of about three months. New fork and Chicago physicians thought the trouble re suited from too much mental work consequent upon tbe management of 4 lusioejs of grsat onrgrrrtyd.-
