The latl Iwiilstura ennciad a law, approved Itiircb 9, 1890, concerning election and aominatinf eonventiont, to maintain Dolittcal purity, and fireeoribinK the pun iaii meat of any violation thereof. It coven r early every offanse powible in connection with primaries, convention! end elections and to eaeb attacbu its particular pumMbment. That prenribed in the flnt acctioa is that tbe person ao convicted of the acts it makes unlawful "bull be lined in any earn not more than Are hundred dollar and disfranchisement ! and rendered incapable of holding any office of proflt or trust wiuun toe stats for any determinate period, and if nomi nated snail Da inensioia m nom sncn oiflce." This punishment relte fas tba following oSensiM of candidate for nomi nation to any ooee or proBt or trust under tbe constitution or law of Indiana or of the United States, before any conven tion or at anv primary bald by any pbMitlcsl party, Loaning, paying or giving, or promising to loan, pay or give any money or other thing of value to any delegate or elector, or any other person, for the pur. pose oi securieg we vote or innuonoa 01 inch delegate, elector or person Birins or otherwise employ ine for con sideration any person to work for tbe nomination of any person to any office, or to work for tbe selection of any delegate to be chosen at any party convention or primary. . Tbe next punishment is a fine of not more than f 1,000 nor Una than $300, together with disfranchisement and inability to bold any office, of trustor profit for any determinate period. If the person convicted baa bee a elected to the. offic-B for which be was striving his election will be declared void, and it be has taken the office ha must vacate it. Tbe offenses to which tbi punishment applies are those detailed above, except that they route toaftieaaiMl not to primaries or eonventioniT ' . - : . ' A third pnnisbment prescribed it a Una "in any sum not less than $25 and not more than 1 100," and imprisonment . "in the county jail not less than -ten days nor more than six months," and disfranchise, ment "for any determinate period not less than ten roar," or imprisonment "in the state' prison at bard labor not less than one nor more than five years." Along with the disfranchisement, of course, goes the deprivation of the right to bold any office of trust or profit. This punishment is to be borne by oneeonvicted of - diving or offering to give, directly or indirectly, arty money, property or other thing of valuo to any elector to influence his vote at any regular election held in this state pursuant to law. Soliciting, furnishing or receiving any money for tbe purpose detailed above. Counseling or suggesting to any person or persons generally, to use or 'procure any money or other means to be used to induce, hire or bay any person or parsons to vote or refrain from voting for any candidates, or to remain away from the polls at any election, whether or not any such person shall act or attempt to act upon any such counsel, advice or suggestion. " . Then ti)ere is another section applying to those who induce electors to remain away from the polls, either directly or indirectly, by giving," offering or promising to give them' money or property. Tbe punishment tor that offense is a fine from $25 to t500, and disfranchisement, to which ' may be added imprisonment in tbe county Jail for any period not exceeding six months. All these offenses are made ground of challenge and the law close with a section relating; to an unlawful breaking of saal and locks of ballot boxes. It also cover tba breaking open of envelopes inclosing tally-sheets, and bags containing ballots. and the withholding and destruction of ballots and tally-sheets, and tba adding to or tbe taking from the tallies of a candidate. The punishment therefor ia a fins from $500 to $1,000 and imprisonment in toe stats prison lrota two to lea years. PESsrbN Benefits. Some people are scared to death lest the country be irretrievably ruined by the pay ment of pensions to soldiers, ttefe umaiabti that nioely-niae one-hundrrHlths of the old aoldiern most spend, their money as soon as they get it, and as a sample of benefits to whole communities read the following from the A rgos Reflector : "Tbe widow of a soldier in this vicinity recently received a handsome sum. In a short time afterwards she invested a part of it in the purchase of a home iq Argor, which she occupied ia a few days after the transfer was made, the farmer owner moving out and into a bouse that had been vacant for: several mouths. The person selling has bought a hit and is making preparations to build a house this summer, thus giving employment to a number of persons and diverting the. tension money into aotive channels of trade. And the same may be said in almost every instance where' any considerable sum has been allowed. We have yet to hear of anybody that has suffered from the "heavy burden" imposed nron the county on accouut of tbe liberal pension policy." -!The Bowen-Mcrrill fire at Indianapoli developed a scarcity of business rooms, and several firms sold their stocks end endeavored to havo llio rent contract eoiiiinu with tho new tsnantt Some of Ihu landlord objected and litigation will fulluw. The practice of whipping aod beating burrs and oxen ' to make them pull more than tbey gre able to haul is a species of cruelty - that ought to subject the party who in-
duTees in it to the same sort of punishment. The .practice of thrashing the patient ox. to increase his6peed, or whacking him across the nose when he is desired to stop, is certainly not the chiracteriaiics of a good teamster, any more than the yanking, twitcning and whipping a horse is tbe indioatioo of a good driver.
