I am constrained to admit that he -was right in this sly surmise. I found myself firmly established in the good graces of tho 8arsnelds. Captain Fawcett even confessed, with a mattered apology, that be bail done me an injustice, but the admission want sorely against the grain, I could sea. He still bated me most cordially, bat on grounds that 'were pardonable, after all. Maw Bertram, I began to flatter myself, decidedly preferred my society to bit, and I became, in consequence, more devoted than ever. It was evident that so long as Cornelia was at large, and in a position to break his promise or to renew his throats, Mr. 8arsfieia would know no peace of mind. The truest kindness,' In spits of his fears, would bs to oall his tormentor tostriot account for his crimes. Happily Comelis did not elude us long. We heard of him on the third day. He, or a man sewering to bis description, had aissiad by the Harwich steamer to Antwerp. "What' did I tell you?" cried Smart, triumphantly. "Ho has gone straight home.V 'Where we, had better follow him imimmedmUly." "No; we'll give him a day or two, or rather the ntwerp police, just to get upon the seei t, aad then well join to run him in together. IU send over instructions to-night." ' This seemed a judicious plan, and I agreed to it readily. We were rewarded, for in a few days same news in the shape, of a telegram from the chief of the Antwerp polios. "Have you man in view,"' it said. "Lose so time. Identification indispen. We were in Antwerp next morning, Smart and I Hasnip, sinoe his fiasco at this bathing machine, had been dropped oat of the ease and the moment wa landed we drove to the Grand Place, leaving- oar luggage with the Commissionnalre of the Hotel St, Antoine. The chief of the police, a smart man, wearing a military uniform and speaking TiggHsh fluently, was very pleased to see as. "Ton want one Cornells Jansseo. Can yon describe his appearance?" ' I did" as "requested. "He is known to as, I think; but yon shall see for J ourselves. The man we mean belonged to Antwerp His mother had a stall in. the Friday market." "Bat is he in Antwerp now?" "Beyond doubt a Cornells JTsnssen; if only it is the same man. We have had ear eye on him for coma days. We should have beea obliged to send him to jail for drunkenness and disorderly conduct had yoa not wanted him for tbe larger crime. He had been twice in the ' amigo' our police eells utireedy, aad he is utterly gjveaap tt, dissipation of the worst "In funds, of course." ' "Ho has evidently unlimited eash: He lives at an estsmjnet a drinking-shop in the Stoegskte, a low part near the quays, and he passes his time between it and the music halls. "WJaereishenow?" "In his bed, probably, sleeping off the fumes of gin and white Louvain beer. Come, we will take him where he lies, if only yon are sure." It was a short walk op the Grand Place, and by the Boo Haute, across the square of Cepacia Convent, and in to the Steegaken, a narrow, dirty alley, every second door that of an estaminet, tba rest shipebaudlers aad shops selling wooden sabots; sailors' gaudy handkerchiefs, round cheeses and dried flat-fish. We halted before a drinking den, the "Estaminet in den Korn bloembij van Loo so ran the sign. At the sight of the police the landlord, trembling, asked how he could oblige. A sharp colloquy followed in Flemish, at tba end of which the Chief of - the Polios aaJd to mo: "Come quick. He is still in bad " and ran npstairq, throe flights, followed by a party of policemen, with Bmart and myself. At the top was a tangle door, fast locked, and to a peremptory summons to open, no answer same. At a signal from the chief the obstacle waa beaten down. We rushed in; the room was empty, but the dormer window leading to the roof was flung open, and it was olear our quarry had escaped that way. The Chief looked down into the street and shouted a few words, evidently of warning. Tne answering shouts plainly told he was understood. T he-hubbub increased; cries and counter cries, exclamations of encouragement, sympathy, horror, disgust, fierce eagerness in the chase there was no mistaking their varied sounds. from the roof in front of the dormer window I watched the fugitive's progress. Ha. was fall in sight, rapidly clambering along as best he oeald. I saw him run down the leads, then make a spring on to tbe vable-ead stairs, up which he eiimbed daringly. Thus ha gained the ridge of a steeper roof, and along this he walked earefnUy, carrying his life in his At the end ha encountered a fresh and unexpected obstacle -a tall ohiraney-staok that forbade all ' farther advances. Here be pansed, irresolute, sorely paneled. He could not go forward, and to go bask weald be to fell into the arms of tba po

I had not the slightest doubt it Cornells J&nisen, and I said s8 pOiH"wVyoft come down? H .lsonr iasl chant. One-two three!" the 'Chief khtonted to niiii slowly, rv61 vet in hand. , mill the misoreant would not surrender himself. With a new and more f rantlo eljjort ho tried to climb round the chimney-stack, bat his foot slipped, he lost hold, and next instant he had fallen down there was no telling how far down in the oourt-yard on the other side. They took him up for dead, bat, though fearfully mangled, he still breathed. He lingered in the hospital, to whioh he was removed on a stretcher, and I had teveial interview! with him before ,he the fear of death npon him he confessed to his crime, justifying fully the conclusions at which I had arrived. He had overheard the quarrel between Sarsfleld and Triarte, and knew sufficient Spanish to understand it Then he resolved to make the Spaniard's secret his at any price, and utilise for his own id-
vantage tne power ox extortion mug ooThe murder had been a timole affair. Ho had hidden himself in No. 99 before Triarte retired for the night, but on the Spaniard's appearance, after the victim had emptied his pockets oa the dressingtable, he, Cornelia, had seized the knife, crept behind his viotim and finished him at one stroke. He had taken his own knife with him, but had boon suddenly inspired to use Yriarte's as leas compromising, throwing it from him on leaving No. 99 by the window of the fire-csoape. After the deed be had spent an hoar searching the portmanteau, but with little result. Au he found were a few memoranda and the Cadiz address of Yriarte'a mother. These he utilized in the manner the reader knows, and thrig obtained the proofs he needed for the effectual intimidation of Mr. Sarafield. The whole Of these papers, with many articles df a compromising character, were found ia Comelis' bed-room. I handed them all over to Mr. Sarsfleld withoat examining them. The value he set on them was my justification for this. Whan, a few months later, I made Miss Bertram my wife, I restored to her the hairpin on which I had laid hands,, explaining why I had secured ft. At the same time I cleared up the few points that had remained obscure in this extraordinary ease. Mrs. Sarsfleld knew from the first of the hold Triarte had Over her hasbaud. It was to implore the matt to hold his tongue that she had ventured to No. 99. When she discovered the murder she almost believed itt her hatband's guilt. Che had confided her fears to Fawcett at tho end Of the interview Of which I heard the commencement, who had begun by suspecting her. His action at first had been to shield Mrs. Sarsfleld and then Mr. Sarsfleld. As for my dear wife, her whole idea was to screen her sister, even at the sacrifice of herself. Deep, unhesitating devotion to those whom she loves is an abiding principle with her, as I have found, after many years of the closest intimacy with this noble, unselfish nature. TBS IKD.l Chinese Marriage Safeguards. All Chinese ceremonies in social and religious life are pervaded by strange superstitions. ' Although we do not hear of old shoes being thrown after young married couples, many equally curious forms are gone through with to insure them good luck. A Obineiie girl who is partaking of the last meal she is to eai in her father's house previous to her marriage, sits at the table with her parents and brothers; but she must oat no more than half the bowl of rice set before her, else her departure will be followed by continual scarcity in the domicile she is leaving. If a bride breaks the heel of her shoe going front her father's to her husband's bouse, it is ominous of unhappiness in her new relations. A piece of bacon and a parcel of sugar are hung on the back of a bride's sedan chair as a sop to the demons who might molest her while on her journey. The "Three Baneful Ones" are fond of salt and spices, and the "White Tiger" likes sweets. A bride while putting on her weeding garments stands in a round, shallow basket. This conduces to her loading a placid, wen-rounded1 life in her. future home. After hex departure from her father's door her mother puts the basket over the mouth of the oven to stop the mouths of all who would make adverse comment on her daughter, and then sits down before the kitchen range, that her peace and leisure may be duplicated in her daughter's life. Bleb Inventors. The poverty of inventors has been frequently remarked, and there can be no doubt that some of the greatest inventive geniuses, who have ever bene fited mankind, have died in abject poverty. The subjoined, however, presents another side of the picture. The business of inventor pays a smaller average profit than any other business in this country, because there are so many failures to one success. But the inventor of the Hoe printing press made $300,000. Thomas Silverman, a poor mechanic, made $70,000 from copper-toed shoes for children. The horseshoer, Henry Burden, made $900,000 from his manufactured horse shoes". The inventor of the stylographic pen has made $1,000,000. Edison has made $4,000,000, and his inventions have benefited the world ten times as much. The patentee of. the "return ball" made $500,000, and the toy known as "Dancing Jim Grow" has yielded to its deviser an annual income of $25,000. The inventor of the roller skates has pocketed $1,000,000, and the thinker out of "pigs in clover is -still harvesting shekels. A good many know that Thomas Jefferson was a great man, but it is not so well understood that he was the father of the American patent system ; that he drew up the earliestpatent laws, and that while Jie was Secretary of State, under Washington, he gave his personal consideration to every application that was made for a patent. Tea and the Teeth, Some years since, when on duty at recruiting stations in the north of England, I took observation on the great amount of diseases and the loss of the teeth existing among the clats of men offering themselves. It became a cause of rejection of itself in great numbers. As far as my inquiries went I was led to trace it to the excessive tea-drinking indulged in by the working classes in the manufacturing towns, and this went on all through the day, whether with food or sot. In fact, instead of 5 o'clock tea being the invention of the upper classes, it was found to exist to an injurious extent iu the working classes long before that time. Tea seems to have a peculiar tendency to cause hyperssmia in the tooth sacs, leading to inflammation, and, eventually, abscess of the fang, with, of course, dentralgia at every stage. Whether this special tendency was due to theine or tannin having an elective affinity for dentine it is not possible for me to say. It would be curious to know if medical men, practicing in such manufacturing districts, had observed the deterioration ot teeth to be coincident with tea-drinftW- BriiUth Medical Journal, No wonder that an old hen is hard to drive from the garden.
