' Indianapolis Sun: Rev. S. T. Gillett, one of the fathers of Methodism in Indiana, died at his home, 138 MaauachUMitts-ave., Monday morning. In 1826, when 17 yearn old, he was appointed midshipman in the U. S. navy, and was subsequently promoted tn the comnmnil of a man-of-war. In 1831 he surveyed the first railroad in the State, running from IndianapoIiH to Madison. Subsequently ha married Miss Hannah Good of Madison, resigned from the navy and entered the ministry, working continually in this State ever since. He was an eloquent preacher and a thoroughly read man on all subjects. His widow and three eons, Phillip G., of Jacksonville, Ills., Simon T., of Danville, Ills., and Owen T.t of Colorado Spriugs, survive him. Ml, . O.I An low niau refused to give a ebew of tobacco on demand, and waa promptly killed. This furnishes a valuable illustration for an argument in favor of retaining the tobacco tax. It demonstrates that a man may become such a slave to the weed that he will suffer death rather than allow anoth er to take a bite off the end of his plug.
