Consumption is largely ow ihe increase in California, according to
the Nate Board of Health. Ui
1.007 deaths reported in October,
147 were from this disease. The
Board does not seem to think thia
is due to the coming of invalid

it is spreading by contagion. Its

The State Board has 110 such desire

the promiscuous mingling of
consumptives with healthy people,
which is its duly.
M. Delargy, in a papcrcontribut-
ed to the Journal Hygiene, points out that certain mountain regions
in Europe, formerly exempt from
phthisis, have now become infected since intercourse with cities and
phthisical localities have been fur
nished, and considers the crowding together of a large mi m Iter of
phthisical cases, in the most
healthy localities, will soon have
an unfavorable effect upon the
purity of the atmosphere. Indeed
it may ue said that consumption is
never contracted except by contact
by association,, or by living in, close proximity. The length of time
consumed by phthisis before prov

susceptible persons coming in con tact with it ; hencB its great dan ger when not isolated, Cadeac and Malet, by expert

The January number of Lippincott's Magazine is an exceptionully brilliant one. The complete novel, "Millicent and RomhIiikI," in contributed by Julian Hawthorne,
and is the brightest, clevere-t, and j
most interesting story that this pnpulur author haa yet written. The heroinea of ihe romance are two bright and charming English cirltt, and the story of their life U most enlertaiiiingly told. All the characters in the novel arc skillfully portrayed, and the reader is introduced to a delightful circle of acquaintances, with whom ho m very loath to part company.
