Wheat will come in at a pret ty lively rate perhaps, early in the season, not because the price is high (70c.), but because there is a large ctop of it. Frank Fooler will preach at Cold Water, Kansas, during the next two months, but like ail the other boys had to start from Bloomington. The first wheat brought to this place for grinding was raised by Jas. Moore, east of town. The grain was solid and good and averaged 35 bushels to the acre. Another artesian well ia being dug at Martinsville. Tlie expense of "taking treatment" at tne Barnard well is said to be $8 per week now, in addition to board. That is a little on the Hot Springs style. A serious accident happened to T. P. Whitson, last Wednesday. He wa3 on his way home in a road wagon, and was thrown from the vehicle when near the Wood Yard. The wheels passed over him, and his injuries it is feared may prove fatal. Frank Axtell of the Washing ton (Daviess oo.) schools is sick with fever at the residence of his father came here to the funeral of Mrs. Kennedy and was taken sick after arriving. Washington county, according. to the enumeration just taken. would ie a good plsce for colored people to "flock," as there is not colored person in the entire coun ty. Salem, the couuty seal, is saul to be especially hospitable to the colored folks and great inducements a.-e held out to any who will locate there. . There is considerable sickness in town at present, especially fevers, due:, no doubt, to the great quanti ty ot decaying vegetation and the number of pig pens that are stinking in various portions of town. This is' an outrageous thing and should not be tolerated. As a matter of justice to those of onr citizens who take care of their premises the slovenly and careless people should bo compelled to do rialit in this particular asa measure ot relief for themselves aa well as others. During the big 4tb. of July demonstration at Denver, Colorado, Mr. F. E. Deweese and wife (oce Bertha Baker) left their room for a few moments while tbey went to the uext corner to see the procession. On returning they discovered that Mr. W.'s fine gold watch had disappeared. They had incautiously left the door unlocked. Prof. Geo. Owen, practical demonstrator of Geology, has established a chair of active research in the city college for light offences. The students in this department will be permittel to oittupy airy quarters at the southeast corner of the depot, under a neat awning, and will have as a lecturer and tutor perhaps Prof. Gar. Reeves.
