Bedford Mail: A cloud-burst occurred at Salem, Ind., on Thursday July Ut about 9 o'clock. The north bound passenger train was caught in it and delayed over an boor and a half, the water on the track comine into the fire-box of the locomotive and putting out the fire several times. lit one place a pile of driftwood had been formed on the track which it was necessary to remove. Considerable stock is thought to have bean drowned, and much fencing destroyed, . JSo human lives are known to have been tost. A young man who was on the train and got oft' at Bedford described the roar of the rushing waters as resembling Niagara in volume. A heavy bank of watery looking ilouds was visible in the south and east 'from this point Thursday forenoon, but no rain fell here. Duke & Sons, manufacturers of cigarettes, to recover $10,000 lor libel. The plaintiff is Gracie Wade, who ia understood to bo an actress. The plaintiff alleges that tho defendants have tak en a picture of her face and head and attached it to an immodest representation of a woman in tights, and that numerous photographs or drawings have been made of this composite portrait and distributed throughout tbe country in boxes of cigarettes and exposed in show windows, outside theaters and at other places, thus exhibiting her to her friends, neighbors, acquaintances and the public in a way calculated to lower her in their estimation and to injure her character and do violence to her feelings. " The ease with which pension frauds are committed, under circumstances that favor a swindle, can bo seen by a case unearthed recently. The widow of an Audersonville victim got a pension of 136 a month in 1871. She married again and died in 1873, Hit hufehund took her pn iters, married a woman who was made to personate her until he died iu 1887. She took up with another man, who learned her stwy and made her continue tho swiudle against her will. When they separated iu 1888 she ceased drawing the pension and invest igat ion revealed these facts. Since 1873, for fifteen years, a fraudulent pension has been paid, amounting to 86,480.
