"The will is missing, and why t Because it hag been destroyed by Ruby Lawrence, that white-faced, cringing little hypocrite! yonder. Now, sirs, I will tell my story, and at any time will reseat it under oath. 'Last night, after Hiss Ruby Lawrence had returned from the theater, her father summoned her into the libraryiawhere he had spent the entire evening. How do I know? For the best of reasons. I was there myself I" There was a low murmur of astonishment from the lipa of the Chief of Polios. Gabrielle continued: "I called here last evening, shortly after dark. Gilbert Lawrence himself admitted me; therefore the servants are not cognizant of the visit. He begged like a dog to be forgiven for the wrong that he had - done me, and agreed to make his will in my favor at once: an. oleographio will, which would greclnde the necessity of calling in a iwyer, and making the affair known to a third party. "That will was to have been placed in my possession this morning, but. instead, I was horrified to hear of this awful tragedy, and I hastened here to tell all, and denounce the murderetis yonder! "As I have already said," continued Gabrielle, with a comprehensive glanoe around the room "that girl, Ruby Lawrence, entered the library after hor return from the tlAater last night, and was closeted with Her latner for several hours. "Ah. be sure I can prove my wordi 1 There is a woman employed here as a housemaid, named Maggie Willel.t, Gall her, and ask her a lew questions. If I am not mistaken, you will bare cause for surprise !" Yes," interrupted Arthur Wynne, quietly; "let the household be summoned. No allegation of a common hireling can affect the spotless name of ttuby Lawrence." Iiye minutes 'later, Maggie WUlett was in the room. A dark-browed, sullen-looking young woman, who caais a furtive glance about her before she commenced to speak, in a low, hesitating tone: "You wish to speak with me, su'?" she began, glancing boldly into the stern faco of Artnur Wynne. "My room is in the third story, where all the servants are; Miss Baby's is in the second story. When I got there I turned the handle softly aud opened the door. "The room was empty; the gas was burning; the fire was low; the bed had not been slept in, and Miss Baby was not there. "I didn't know what to think. But, after all, it was none of my business; so I hurried out of the room, and just as I got on the landing outside, I heard a clock, somewhere in the house, strike two; and at that very minute, a door below stairs opened soft and slow-like. "I stopped short; I thought 'twas burglars, yon see ; but just then I heard a voice below speak sharp, and quick, and angry like. " 'It's no use making trouble, Buby,' said the voice and then I kne 'twas Mr. Lawrence himself 'fori can't help what is past and goo I've told you that I'm sorry, and that I'll make it up to you all X can.' But Miss Buby spoke uv like a mad woman. -"'You're worse than a murdererl1 she said, 1 will have that paper, or X will take your life I 1 stood at the top of the stairs, gentlemen, so afraid that I could scarcely tell whether I was dead or alive. "For just a moment I stood there watching her; then an awful fear crept over me. I said to myself, it can't be anything serious) How could abittf a girl like that do any harm to a strong man like Mr. Lawrenoe? So I slipped back upstairs to my own room, and locked myself in and laid down on the bed till morning. Whon I got baok to my room it was a quarter to three pre cisely oy tne ciocK on tne inantoi. "This morning I arose early and hur ried around to a dentist to have my tooth out. After it was extracted and I on mv way baok, I met the raadanio yonder. I'd soen her soveral times already. During its recital Arthur Wynne had been standing, pala and agonized, his eyes dilated with honor, his cold hands clenohing and unclenching each other convulsively; a 100K upon us 1 ace that uoaea ui to some one. When the story was Jlnished, he stepped forward and gazed fall into Maggie Willett's stolid faco, "You had your tooth extaacttfd," he began, with 'apparent irrelevancy; "what dentist did you visit' V" The girl started, and her eyes sought the floor, hesitating palpably. Then a swift upward glance, and her eyes met Gabrielle St. Oyr's for the least possible space. Was it Arthur Wynne's imagination, or did he obwirve a slight sign of recognition pass between the two? "What dentist?" he repeated, sternly. "Dr. Franklin," replied the girl; "he he extracted the tooth f "Your story is told," naid Arthur Wynne, gravely. "You may go." As the door olosed behind Maggie Willett, the officer who had accompanied Gabrielle to Lawrence Park, stepped to Ruby's side, and laid his hand npon the shoulder of th kneeling girt "I arrest you in the nameof the law!" he was beginning, but Arthur Wynne sprang upon him like a tiger. "Never!" he thundered. "Dare to touch that innocent girl, and X will shake the life from your body!" "Ofllcer," interposed GabiieUf , oc-m-mandingly, "I demand that giH'f Arrest!" "Arrest her at your peril I" cried Arthur Wynne madly. "This foul charge is monstrous horrible! X will not submit to it." ' Gabrielle's large dark eyes were lifted to bis wrathful face with a long, slow look. "You I" Bbe sneered. "You speak as one having authority! What right have yon to interfere in this matter,, sir?" For., answer, he turned down the lapel of his coat with a hasty gesture, which revealed the glittering silver badge npon his breast. Gabrielle fell back with a low ory. "I I never dreamed it!" she 'muttered under her breath, too low for any one to bear.. "He must not recognize me, or know that I am Adele's mother. He must not connect me in any way with the ballet dancer of the Odeon Theater, or all is lost!" Arthur Wynne stood gazing into her face with perplexed wonder. 'It had just occurred to him that that face was familiar. "Where have I met you?" heVaa beginning, imperiously, but Gabrielle shook her head. "I have never seen yon in my life before to-day," she answered slowly. 30 as ooNTrjiuro.l Health Saggestlea. Extermination ef flengeheM Pasts. Pro! O. V. Riley, the Government entomologist, was recently called upon by (food Housekeeping to make an award of prizes offered by that magazine for (1) the best buffalo bug extinguisher, (2) the best bed-bug finisher, (3) the best moth eradicator, (4)' the best fly and flea exterminator. Prof. Riley found that the most satisfactory remedies proposed for the bed-bug were pyrethrum, benzine, naptha, gasoline, and kerosene, there being little if any. choice between these substances if thoroughly applied. Fw remedies were suggested for tho buffalo bug. One correspondent proposed a combination of steaming and pyrethrum powder, which Prof. Riley pronounced effective and answering the purpose unquestionably.' For flies and fleas the prize was divided among a number of correspondents, most of whom favored the, East India insect powder of pyrethrum. For clothes moths the award Was divided between two competitors, one ' of whom recommended gasoline, the other insect powder. - . . In conclusion Dr. Riley said: "Let me state that for the buffalo bug there is no easy remedy. Experience has taught that the following method should be panned: Take Bp the carpets, all over the house, spray them with, benzine. Fill up the cracks either with plaster of Paris or with cotton batting, saturating them with benzine, and then after the odor has evaporated, and all has been thoroughly aired, relay the carpet, placing along the borders of the room strips of tarred roofing paper or paper soaked in boiled lard. Clothes andxarpeta may be entirely freed from all these pests by steaming or dry beat wbex..thasa moikods. are practicable; while for the bedbug corrosive 'sublimate carefully handled and applied is, perhaps, of all things the most satisfactory, though excluded from the prize by your restrictions. Pyrethrum is often impure, as purchased in the stores,' which will account for the varying experience with it, but when pure is a most satisfactory and safe preventive and remedy for the housewife." The Lace Leaf Plant. The lace leaf plant is chiefly found in the rivers of Madagascar, but it is difficult to find, as it grows best under water. The root is something like a potato, and is roasted and eaten by the natives. The leaves are of different colors, from the light green and yellow of the young growth to the darker shades of the old. The largest leaves are a foot long, and .are delicate mesh work, the center and edges forming a skeleton on which the threads are supported. Looking down into the water where the plants are growing the leaves are said to look like a spread of magnificent lace in brown, green, olive, and gold. They thrive well in greenhouses, only requiring a wet soil and damp, warm air, bnt the trouble of securing them makes them a rarity. St, Louis GtobfrDemocraL Royal Wedding Gifts. Bangers af Chamois Hunting. The experience gained in ordinary deer stalking is of little use to the chamois hunter the region in which the gamo is to be een is so different, while the agility and watchfulness of tho two animals compel the cultivation of very different kind of adroitness. The man who is fit to win and wear the much prized, "Gambort," orlongfuft of hair from the back of ihe winter pelt of the chamois, requires to be a man of iron muscles, cool head, unerring eye, and a courage that must often be prepared to face terrible odds, to avoid the clanger of having to meet others much worae. Without the power of undergoing fatigue and privations it is vain his attempting to become an adept in this sport. And one of the very charms of the "Gamsjagd" lies in the knowledge that he cannot obtain his success by any kind of adventitious advantages. Neither man nor dog can be of any use to him. He must rely entirely on himself; and if once he gets troubled with a dread of hunger or cold, or abyss or crevasse, or slippery glissade, he may much better try bin fortune at humbler game. In short, chamois hunting is Alpine climbing, plus the fact that it i the antelope, and not the guide, who selects the traveler's route. London Standard. Courtesy ef the Spaniards. As I was opening the door of the dining room to pass out a Spaniard approached, and I, knowing the great oourtesy of Spaniards, determined to be courteous, too, and so I held the door for him to pass out first, which he did almost unconciously; then suddenly finding that he had passed out before me, while I held the door, "he turned most apoligeti oally to me and, repeatedly "expressei?. his regret " I shall not forget his tone, nor the feeling of concern which was shown in his countenance. Of course I gave him the proper assurance as best X could;; and then, to ease his mind, I ask him n question wluoh I did not need to aslt about the postage of a newspaper to England, and this he took pains to answer.
