K. came into use : Very early in the thirties a talented newspaper man, Seba Smith by name, was connected with weekly newpaper of lares circulation published at Portland, Me. A feature of the paper was a letter purporting1 to come from Washington, V. 0,, hot really written by Smith, which was signed "Jack Downing-." This "Downing" was supposed to be an intimate friend of President Jackson, whom "he always referred to as "the General," and made Old Hickory appear to be an uncouth, and illite rate man. In one of these letters JaokfP i , , , JJ " 1 wwwog team sow us noncea 4iundle of papers upon Jackson's desk tied with a strimj and corispicrjoasly marked "O. K." There never was S greater mistake. I have seen a hundred letters written by him; then are several in this city now that show his language is tens, carefully chosen, and his sentences as grammatically constructed as those of any public man of his day. It is also true "that the symbolic letters were used by the Whigs in October, 1840, to express their satisfaction after Governor Ititner was elected by 60.00J) in Pennsylvania, Tom Corwin in Ohio by 40,009, and W. H. Seward in Sew York by 50,000 majority, when they concluded this was O. K., ai it satisfti d them that "Old Tip" would be el an November following. A CaWsplaiBssw'AaJiuw's Birth' PUSS.. W insensibility to it in the fact al leged is nationally so discreditable that we are reluctant to urge another sin of omission upon the repentance of our readers. But it is perhaps a lighter one, and without seeming too r proachful we may quote the letter of a friend who writes to the Study from fetrat-ford-on-Avon : "I have been visiting the Bhahspeare Memorial here," he writes, "and noticing with delight the admirable beginning made of a complete Shakspearean library, as well as portrait and picture galUiy. The memorial, with its fine theater and beautiful gardens, only last week completed and open to the public, ia really a noble enterprise, and one from which our countrymen are sure to reap con stant advantage, when I tell yon that notwithstanding all the interest shown in Stratford by American a, and the appeal made by Minister Phelps in his speech in the Lyceum Theater hit London to American Shakspearean authors and publishers for American editions and American Shakspeareana, there actually is shown in the library only three or lour short shelves filled with some four or five of the recent complete editions the Rolfe, Hudson, etc with almost nothing in the way of separate plays, studies, noticed of plays, programmes, etc., yon will, I am sure. agree with me in feeling that we in America owe a big debt to Stratford in ibis respect which we are altogether too isdiSerent about, especially in view of the bitter facts (to our friends here) that in Sew Xork alone there are fourteen copies of the First Folio, and not one in otratford I "Now pardon me if in the mingled emotions of American pride and mortif. cation sit this state of things X write to yon, on the spur of the moment, and ask if there is not some quick, easy, and practicable way of setting the ball rolling in the way of getting np a comolete collection of American Shak' speariana as a gift from Americans to the Stratford Memorial. It would ba a much more significant aud valuable gift than even fountains and statues, for this will, or ought ultimately to, become the center for the study of Shakspeare, and the library is the true fountain for lovers of Shakspeare to furnish here," W. 2. Over S)lfiO,000 BeaUsed Off One Back of Flour. Probably the most noted eleotion bet was that made -by Kuel Gridley, of Austi i, Nebraska, in 1862. He bet that he weu'd beat his opponent. The terms of the wauer demanded that the loser should carry a sack of flour from upper to lower Austin. Gridley lost, and the day after election started on his trip, accompanied by the entire population of Anstin. The quest on arose as to what disposition should be made of the flour, and some ingenious individual suggested that it be sold at auction for the benefit of the Western Sanitary Comniission. Gridley was auctioneer, and the bag was knocked down for $250. The purchaser declined to receive it, and suggested that it be sold again. Tho idea took like wildfire, and the bag was sold again and again, and before night the sum of f 8,000 had been realized. Gridley saw fame for him and gold for the sick soldiers opening before him. He entered heart and soul into the idea, and he started with his now famous bag of flour on an expedition which immortalized himself, and brought joy and comfort to thousands of suffering soldiers. His reception every where was like ft Roman triumph, and the people, infected by the noble work, vied and struggled with each other in their generous rivalry. Gridley sold his flour nil over the West, and finally exhibited it at the groat sanitary fair in St. Louis. Afterward the flour was baked into small cakes and sold at a high price. When the grand total was added up it was found that Gridley's bet had been tho means of adding more than $150,000 to tbe funds of the Western Sanitary Commission. AMERICA'S CORN CROP. The Supreme Court of this State has handed down an important decision concerning the right ol! the Salvation Army to parade upon the public streets of the cities of the State. Seme weeks ago the city of Wellington, with tho intention of preventing the Salvation Army from parading upon its utreeis, passed an ordinance forbidding any person, society, association, or organization to parade upon any public street of that city, while shouting, singing,' beating drums, tambourines, or other musical instruments, unless consent in writing from the Mayor was first obtained. Aftnr this ordinance was passed and published, several members of tho Salvation Army paraded on one of the principal streets of that city without the written consont of the Mayor, and contrary to th provisions of the ordinance. The lender, together with several of his male and female associates, was arrested, and subsequently triad and convicted in the police court of the oity. Appeals were tnke u by the defendants to the District Court, where the parties wore again convicted, and thereupon they appealed their cases to iho Supremo Court. That court, in tho opinion handed down, which is the first ever given on this subject, doolared the ordinance void and discharged all the parties arrested. The vouxt says, in us upmion; "It is not a reasonnule regulation to vest the power arbitrarily in the Mayor to grant or refuse permission to any association of persons, coinbitted for legal and meritorious purposes, to parade tho streets with music. The use of musical instruments on such occasions is not specially objectionable. Songs and shouts, cheers and tbe waring of banne rs have always been consid ered as aetnonstraticns or api roval, ana not ai ttnding to create disturbances or provoke breaches of the neaco. All tbeso are the usual accompaniments of public demonstrations ia every civilized country, and there is nothing in their use on all ordinary occasions of this character to justify absolute proh bitlon."
