Tbe hall over the laundry was occupied by the Me chanics Band, but as the flatus were confined to the laundry, the band boys lost nothing. The lau adry machinery, valued at about $1 .000, aud about 8500 worth of clothes belonging to patrons of tlic laundry were entirely destroyed. The proprietor of the laundry had (500 insurance on his machinery and fixtures, and John May's building was protected by insurance. No one knows bow tbe fire originated. The building, whiob was quite large, was soon a mass of flameu, and befote the engine reached the ground it was evident that it could not be saved. The building had been 'Used for che purpose many years, and as a consequence everything was saturated with oil. The heat was so intense that tbe firemen found it difficult to work, but they succeeded in saving tbe dwelling house just east of the factory, by the most persist' ent end daring exposure. No set of men ever worked harder or took greater risks, and they deserve vaatTy more credit than they are likely to receive, libera was but little stock in the motqry b,u.l visiderabie custom wool, some of which was, saved.
