A New York merchant writes as fol
lows to The New York Express; I today received a letter from Oswestry, ISnghmd, of which the following is an extract: "Xow for one word on the political situation. I am a strong protectionist, for, as a workingman, I have benefitoa by protection in the United States. The RkiUed artisan lives better, .wears better clothes, keeps his family more respectable in the United States -than in any other country, and he can, in addition, save more money there than he can earn in England; and England pays higher wages than any other European nation. In voting against; a free trade policy workingmen are voting for
themselves every tune. W. T. Joints." The facts that brought out this letter sire as follows Mr. Jones is a friend of mine who came over to this country a number of years ago and worker) as a printer. He was so expert that he fi oally became head of a printing office and after a time received an interest in a trade paper. After he had gained a gixol position financially his wife became uneasy and wanted to gobaclr. to England, and finally Mr. Jones went back, invested in a hotel at the place where this letter h dated, ami his investments am such tlmt he cannot leave them, or ho would return to this country. The above extinct was written to me as a friend. Now here is a man who knows what protection means, and this argument i worth more than all the economic free trade arguments that profcssiQnai men cm string together.

our government, realizing the- service , performed by the soldiers, will see to it that all of the 10,000 old soldiers in the ' ponrhouses of our land are removed, and that every soldier who needs it -(hail receive an adequate pension. Ex -Senator Warner Muter. j This sentiment is applauded by about 40,000 old soldiers in New York wbo will . not vote for Preddent Ctevelaud'i; re-elec- j tion. The president doesn't believe that way. Inter Ocean. j We hear that there is a great rush of . Irish voters toward Harrison, that there are five Irish Republican dubs in New ' York where there was one in 1834. We ' hear a Democratic congressman from New York was asked teat week if as many Irishmen would vote for Harrison as voted for Blaine. "A great many more," be answered. This year there will be no Mugwump organization' in Connecticut. The . free traders have gone over to the Democracy permanently, bat a majority of the Mugwump will undoubtedly vote for IlkrriKon. There is not a sign of division in the Republican ranks, and the party will work v.'ith more energy and unity than it has since 1880. The state is largely tt manufjicturing one, and many of Hi industrial interests would be seriouiily crippled if any such measure as the MiAa bill should become a law. Philadelphia Press (Hep.) Before Henry Wattemoo heard from Clregon and had met the St. Louis convention he remarked: "The Democrat who fa not a free trader should go elsewhere,'' and they are doing ft by the ttioasaftd; and Henry has struck a campaign note at least four fiats below that of "for revenue only," and wants to rove that Democracy is "the party of protection." Nothing is being denied riore vigorously than toe fact that Doutc cracy favors free trade. The sudden-ic-ss of Paul's conversion is equaled, if tot excelled, Chicago Inter-Ocean. CoL "Watterson diagnosed the presi -dent's case with considerable accuracy vrhen he said, Feb. 8, 1887: "He thinks that when he saves a few hundred dollars by a veto of some poor t ievil'g pension he has discharged a great public function: in short, he whittles intitead of sawing wood." Still, it U thought that Col. Watterson now regards the foregoing bit of wisdom us one of "the things one would rather not have said." Boston Journal.

The New York gun demands the recall ft the Hon. Frank Hunt, who has been vent out by Chnlnriiih Brice to stump Minnesota, Iowa, and Michigan, making free trade speeches. Hired goes 'on the idea that New York is already-lost to Cleveland, and the Sun tells him and the rommittoe that this amount ' to a confession that "the Democrats are defeated three months before election day." Such fatal frankness fails to please the Sun. I Cumberland Daily News. - The Democrats profess a great, abhorrence of trusts, but when the chief of a enuine and powerful trust, whose uninistakahlo purpose la to enrich its memtiers at the expense of the public, comes privately to the Democratic members of the ways and means committee the duty which they had fixed upon for chuan mikst ia at once raised to a figure which iwits the sugar trust's representatives.
