-John D. Morgan has bought a new spring wagon and team and placed it on the streets. The beech mast is immense ibis year ; as much as six nuts being found in each bur. . There is "power" ol bad breath being expended on the streets just now, in the discussion of polit ical topics. . Some of the Democrats went to Sudbury and asked him to withdraw from the race for Sheriff in favor of Jack Dowden, and take the race against Gaston again.. To tin's demand Sudbury put in a posi tive refusal. Henry Wwdery of the Bee Hive dry goods store, --has been planting mile posts in various directions during the past week. j The posts give the distance to the r . . n. ., Bee Hive in Bloomingtcn, and i hey also give accurate measurement in miles from these posts to i lie town. 100 posts, traversing all the roads in the county. The connfy commissioners made an order last week for which they deserve a rising vote of thanks from the tax-payers of Monroe county. They serve notice upon evsry Trustee of the county that no temjiorary relief shall hereafter be granted to paupers who keep dogs. It is a notorious fact that the "ornrier" a fellow ia the greater the number of dogs he keeps sheep-killing dogs, too. The commissioners have wisely determined that it they . must support these people they arc not bound to feed ibeir dogs.' Hence the order. Farmer's Home : The famous Henry Ward Beecher preacher and fancy farmer claimed to have solved the problem of getting rid of the Canada thistle. He said : ''The only way to exterminate the weed is to plant it for a crop and propose to make .money . out of it. Then worms will gnaw it, bugs will bite it, beetles will ho re it, heat will scorch it, cold will freeze it, and mildow and blight will cover it." 'Don't forget that the Monroe CO. THE INSTITUTE. The second institute of Su pt, Cra vens' administration was held re cently in the city public school building. With but few exceptions all of the one hundred and eigh teen teachers of the county were present. Also many visitors came in during the week to attend the various exercises. In general the work was well done, and not only Snpt. a teachers but also citizens and frieuds of education may congratulate themselves over the suc cessful outcome of the week's labor. The schools of the county will be the better for it, and both Supt. and teachers may take up the work of the year in Sept. with the comfortable assurance that their work will advance and not retrograde. . Dr. Lind of the Danville, Ind. Normal is earnest, helpful and mod est in his work, in the experi ments and suggestions made by him during the week the industrious, progressiva teacher will find much to assist him in promoting, the general information of his pupils.. Mrs. McR re of the Purdue Ag.siculLural.Oollege at Lafayelte.Jnd is an institute instructor of recognized ability and unusual merit. Her long and varied experience in the publio schools of the State especially fit her in doing not only interesting but 'helpful work for the common school teacher. The success to which she has attained should be an inspiration to every woman with whom she comes iu contact. The lady teschers of the county are specially to be congratulated in having had the pleasure of listening to the suggestive and valuable talk of Mrs. McRae. The third instructor, Prof. Beck, is well and favorably known to the teachers of the county. All recog nize his ability for doing most excellent work, nor does any fail to appreciate his earnestness and zeal: in sttiving after the uplifting and promoting of the educational interests of the county. He never fails in giving suggestive, helpful work and no tocher who heard hint will soon forget the earnest and strong talk which he gave on Moral Training in the publio schools. The evening entertainments of the week were all of the best. Ihe special on Monday evening was well attended and the work excellent. Mr. Carter's essay and Mr. Ray's oration were worthy of them and reflect much credit njxm the teachers of the county. Miss Or chard fully maintained her reputation as a dcclainier. Unfortunately Miss Philputt wis sick. She no doubt had a fine essay.' Rev. Lyons' lecture on Tuesday eveniug was uiemy appreciate! ur ine gkd to have the pleasure of listen ing to him. 1 he entertainment on Wednesday eveniug, "An Hour iu Fairyland," nvas especially fine. The audience was very large; and both managers and children acquitted themselves with great honor and merit. No surer test of appreciation can be given than that this entertainment was repeated Tuesday evening, Ang. 21. The weather interfered with the Spelling Bee, but there were enough present to have a very enjoyable time. Dr. Lind received the first prize, TJ. H. Smith the second, and Miss Mattie Carter the third. Almanacs were profusely distributed to many good spellers. , The succesH of the Musicale and Literary of Friday evening was strongly attested by the large audience present. Space and time forbid mentioning as they deserve the names and the merits of the many fine performances rendered on that evening. This city is especially to becongratnla'ed on having so many fine fine aud public-spirited musi cians as she possesses. Under the efficient management of Supt. Cravens the Institute is fast becoming the mid-summer event of the year. The ' teachers fully appreciate this as was manifested. by the resolutions passed at the close of the session. Townspeople recognize it through the additional life aud energy imparted to the community at mid-summer. Tn both teachers and Supt. we bid a God speed with the hope that the coming school year may be as successful as the institute of 1888. "Threshing wheat is not the money making business it was several years ago," said an old machine man. "There are so many machines in the county that grain is all cleaned up in about two weeks, when ten or fifteen years ago the run was always two or three months. In those days it was a paying business, but now against yon make money enough to pay for your machine the latter is worn out. There is a fascination, however, about the work that is hard to account for. .It is noticeable that when a man begins runnings threshing machine lie keeps it up many years in suc cession eveu though he may be losing money ail the time by doiug so. The people here know Mr. McNary, and the esteem in which they hold bint is best indicated by the immense attendance at ti e Harrison Club meeting at which he spoke, and! by the enthusiasm which, his utterances elicited.
