is DR, BROOKS IGNORANT, OJK IS HE MISTAKES 1 Seme Facts on This HucU Dlscussed illuesttoa. , . Dr. Brooks, the Prohibition candidate for Vice President, in his speech Uere;jhe tsvenittg of the 23d ef July, stated substantially, that if the tax was taken off distilled spirits used in the arts and mechanical purposes, it would require an officer at every place all over this country where distilled spirits are sold to see that it was sold tor the purposes stated. The Dr. certaanly was ignorant of the fact that for fifteen years distilled spirits have been exempt from tax tor scientific purposes, in any incorporated or chartered scientific institution or college of learning, and for ten years also ex empt to be used in any scientific university or college of learning created and constituted as such, by any State or Territory under its laws, though not incorporated, or chartered. Ao(3 for' tea years spir its have been removed from distillery bonded warehouses to any duly constituted manufacturing warehouse without payment of the tax, to ne used for tbe -manufacture of cordials, perfumery, medicines, &o., exnressly for export. Now durinar all these years of exempt on from tax for the purnoses stilted, did any of our third parly fiiehds ever hear the cry of tree whisky, or ot otnoere oeing scattered at places all over this country where distilled spirits are sold, fo ? the purposes stated by the Rev. Dr. ? Certainly not. Now the Republican party in their pint form simply propose to add to 'he list of exemption, spirits used in the arts and tor mechanical purposes. Thm is no source of National revenue so closely gtfflrded aguinst fraud as that of distilled spirits, and in the case of the exemption referred to above, tho most rigid restrict ions arc thrown, around themV ' The Secretary of. the Treasury alone cm grant permits to remove spirits : rom distillery -bonded ware houses Without payment ot tax And tli a proper officer of the insti tution that tremres to withdraw suirits "rom the warehouse for tbe

T ie grand opening of Adams, Hall cfc .Co..on Friday last was graud indeed.' The decorations were of an elaborate character and were designed and executed by Chas. :3all of the firm. In the evening a brass band of twenty pieces i;ave a free concert in front of the store room, and hundreds of people thronged tbe room, admiring the decorations and examining the new goods. OHn, the little six year old son of Ben. Rogers met with a serious accident last Thursday evening. Mr. Rogers was cutting some oats io a cutting machine that runs with revolving knives, and his little son was in front of the maohine playfully sweeping away the oats with his right baud. His father, who was turning the wheel, could not observe the boy closely, but the supposition is that he pushed his hand up further toward the knives each time, till it was finally caught and cruelly lacerated. He was taken to Dr. Bryan's office where it was found that the flesh had been torn from t'lie bull of the haud and the bones of the second and third fingers above the first joint, hud been crushed. Mr. Rogers was very much opposed to having tbe boy's fingers amputated, so the surgeons clipped out the pieces of, injur ed bone, ana oressea tne bam! as deftly ns possible. It is hoped that the wounds will heal kindly, but it is not possible that the child will ever find the fingers very useful, 1 he sixth annual reunion of the old settlers of Monroe and Jjrowu couuttes will be held at Unionville, Ind., ou Wednesday, Aug. ldth, 1888.
