Dear Father : I came here from Springfield about seven weeks ago ; th e town was then made up of three or four box bouses and ' about as many tents; it now haa about 800 people and 200 good houses well filled with all kind of business. Liberal is the present terminus of the Rock Island railway in Kansas, the end of a division. Tbe company have put about 1100,000 in improvements, in the way of depots, etc I never saw (and it is the generral remark of every one) a town built so quick, sod more than this, tbe first day of the lot sale there wits about $150,000 worth of properly sold. It reminded me more of buying circus tickets than buying city property. Ours was among tbe first lumber yards in here, (there ere eight lumber yards now) and we have sold in forty days t5J,OUU worth, ibis is the Brat Sunday that I have not worked since arriving here, hate to do so bnt it vfsa impossible, to avoid it. We are il miles from No Man's Land sod there bus been a town started there since we came, and it is beyond prohibition, and some even sty beyond the U. 8, So you can imagine it a hard place Trail City was no oomparison-r-about 12 hacks are running between the two places. Since coming here I have seen Luther Lowe, two Munsop boys of Ellettsville, brothers of Dr.Munson oi Stanford, and last night bad eilly smith with me, tic is now living at Hutchinson, aud is connecter! with some produce house. He says Wilse Dillrosn is very sick wtto lung fever. Wo have had more rain this spring than for years : wheat crop in counties east is better than for years. Corn, wheat, dto., look fine here. 1 am as ever, Your son, C. H. DODD, A Union Temperance meeting will us hem next Sunday evening, July 1st, at the Kirk wood Avenue Church. The address will be deiiyered by Prof. J. K, IJecH,

The second meeting of t'he Union Soldiers' Protcctlvti Encampment of Monroe county was held at the court house, Juue 154b. The meeting was spirited and interesting, and showed that the boys mean business. A committee from each township in the county was selected by the meeting to ascertain and report at the next meeting, Saturday, Jume 30th, the names, of each pensioner snd each applicant for pension, and each ex-soldier not drawing pen" sion and each soldier's widow and orphan in the county, to-wit : Bioomiiieton township. Mathers ; Richlandi Geo. Matsoa ; Bean Blossom, Elias Smith ; Mtirion, Thos. McGinnis, Each of the above named gentlemen were authorized to appoint an assistant to divide this duty in each township. No expense to join this encampment. Comrade Wallace, flight intiodueetl the following resolution, which created great enthusiasm, and was carried unanimously ttowit: '. "Resolved, That we return thanks to all members of Congress who voted for the widow's mite, arid we will return larger thanks when Congress shall repeal the arrearage act, and still larger thanks if mused this session than next." Applause. ' Committee on speakers appointed by chairman W. L. Adams, Robert Patton, D, O. Spencer. Time for next meeting at court house, Saturday, June 30th. Speakers for next meeting, S. R. Lyons and Rev. Tom Gsskins. John K. East, Chairman. D. O. Spencer, Secretary. Torsissg. Their Faces Home ward. Cars on all out-bound trains Friday night were laden down with weary perspiring, lagged out visitors to the uatioual re publican show. 1 bey go homt ior various reasons. Excursion tickets expiring, money spent, physical capacity exhausted, enthusiasm nauseafinir, a r earning .desire to get home and relate all tbe woitrteflSfff things they have seen, and to He about more wonderful things they have not seen (especially ns to how they were present at the various sessions of the convention, when it is a well known fact that they were not) all these are inducing the visitors to hie themselves home ward. Their departure wad uot iceable on tbe streets, in saloons, in the parks, and especially about hotels". The crowd of visitors at the greatest, was estimated at 200,000. 1 hey enjoyed themselves to a stand still. The visitors came prepared to ppend their money. They found the opportunity at every step. In the halls of the big hotels and of the smaller ones alike the snore of the rural sleeper is absent, and it tells of the failing crowds. Business in the restaurants has declined perceptibly. It is a peculiarity of the rural visitor that he seldom eats the last twenty-four hours he is in Chicago. Nor does he drink or sleep. He simply waits around for his.uofi-bla8ted train to go. Cuicsgo News. The Prohibitionists have begun their national campaign with the convention that wet at Indianapolis. They are earnest men. and they mean to make their earnestness a seriouK thing to the Republican party. They have every pnwpect of success nt least- that far. Bloomington Courier (Dom.) Well, that is about the sixe of it. Here is a Democratic paper, thus early in tbe campaign, openly recognising the third party as the jjemocftftte aid society, the Courier is posted doubtless from head quarters. It may have been a lit tle indiscreet in publishing to the world the third party's part 01 the contract with the Democratic party tbe defeat of the Republicans, but it was so tickled over the proposed cooperation of the third party with the Lfeinocrats that it allowed ita exuberance to run away with its judgment. Perhaps the Courier is correct - in believing the third party is more intent on destroying the Republican party than the whisky traffic. The Courier's early announcement of Democratic end pro hibition cooperation has a strong flavor of their olq combination in 1884 and 1886. Spencer Republi can.
