Cookerly, formerly of Greeacastle, but now of Salt Lake City. Mr. Cookerly and bis wife left here for the west seme five years aim, set dins: n Neodesba, Kan. His wife died last February, leaving him an oaly child, a bright, handsome boy, now about foor years of aire. After tke death of his wife, Mr. Cookerly removed to Colorado Springs, and thence to Salt Lake. At the Springs, Mr. Cookerly entered the furniture store of a roan named Marlow, and a warm fielprang up between them ; Marlow prevailed epon him to go to Salt Lake aad form a partnership with him ia basiaess in that city. Meanwhile Marlow bad conceived an affinity for a Mrs. Vincent, of Colorado Springs, and soon after Marlow's removal to Salt Lake that lady pot ia ao appearance there also. Both Marlow and Mrs. Vincent professed a great attachment for the child, which was manifested at Salt Lake the same as it had been previous to the removal of tb. Mtner aad son to that city. Marlow afterwards proposed a trip to Spokane Falls, which Cookerly did not view favorably, but so per -sisteat waa be in hteanpeals for the easUidy or company of the little one aad such was Cookerly s confidence ia the good intentions of bis friend. that be yielded Io bis entreaties to let the child accompany him. Mr. Vincent left Salt Lake, ostensibly for Portland, Ore., about the sam lime that Marlow left with tbr child for Spokane, 8inec then nothing has been "heart! of them, and the father is heart-broken over the loss of his child. He sent telegrams in every direction after learning that Marlow did not go to Spokane Falls, although two ticket were bought for Portland, Ore., and two for Kansas City. No information from these tickets ean be learned. Frm Athe description given of the boy by toe Bslt lke papers it is believed here that he may he in Kansas City. Mr. Marion Darnell, of this vicinity, was in Kansas City a week or two ago, and mentions having wen a waif on the street there that he believes is the lost boy. He gave ins name as U rover Cleveland, which is the name of Mr. Cookerly'a boy, and said be was four yean old. He had considerable money in bis possession for child to be car ¬ rying, and eave no evidence of de-
j uiuinto or neglect.

The Terra Haute Salt Company, which by the way is only one week old, comraenepd work lant Tnesdoy morning and now their site presents a very lively appearance. There seems to be enough brick and stone piled tip on the ground to build a half doxiin salt blocks. This .company bail exhibited more enterprise in getting down to business than any ompany on this side. They knew juiit what they wanted to do before they commenced to talk about it, The itivcroide company will begin next week.. This company has not decided yet whioh process to pat in, hence the delay. The New York company have ordered all the necessary material and-wil l have the block up in sixty days. Palmer & Davis are drilling tbeiir hole and will be through next wek. The Diamond company will be at work next week. The delay of this company was caused by the necessary ohttnge in the plan' of the building;. The original sice of the the building was 190x160 feet but has .been changed to 270x190 feet. South Hutchinson is bound to make the leading .salt point in this western conutry.
Thi Piwsident has annroved the act of Congress, providing that wnnnnii !riiiifnre or hereafter granted to widows of soldiers in T - aaa a a the late war of tbe rebellion anau begin at the date of the death of their husbands. Judge Thurman and bis wife were engaged in superintending tbe laying of a new Brussels carpet when wpnl waa received of the vice-prtwidential nomination. "Well, Mary," outspake the old Roman, "we might as well stop where we are. - I don't see any use in going 'on with this carpet." "Now, Allen," quietly replied the get'tle dame, "don't get excited. A nomination, you know, isn't an election, and we had better finish laying the carpet. If yoo are elected, and we uecd the carpet in Wethiogton, we can easily tear it up." Allen's only reply was a lusty blow ia the ruddy depths of bis big ha odana, nnd the work of laying tho carpet went steadily on. A story is told of an excellent old lady who lived in Concord, Mass., at the time of the great prevalence of transcendentalism, and she was very much bewildered by the freedom and audacity with which many of her articles of faith were t reated. But she finally came to this conclusion : I don't .care so much about predestination, and free will, and all them sort of things ; but if they take away my total depravity, I shall feel as though I hadn't any religion at all.
