DeFew $. fork. uxm C POiTO. ah w vi cm m c w a. d ProRrera: You will pleaae announce that Tboaaa Wm, of Washington townihip, wiB bo a caacKdata tor Sheriff of Monroe Bounty, snbjer.t to tbo decision of tlte BcptMiee Cesuity tomdn. Mm P Thai "Kepobltcs are aagratefal" has long becst a w. That it f wrongous eoss vithooi question. The United Stain to-dr pays as much to the way of pensions as does England ia the support of btr standing arm 7. anus is e m swriiie lefotedr few aersoas deserviaf of peaaioa are refused one, bat ataay persona not entitled to them receive pensions. This is 'Wrong and it is a wrong that should berenwdied. By what right or under what assompUon of right are pensions given the widows- of de ceased BMitHtOM ana o&eeooraers . These men deelare that they sought office for honor only. They re ceived what the? considered, when tbev took their offices, to be adeonate compensation. . Then why should their widows be pensioned? Mrs. Jjoean, Mrs. iUatrand Mrs. Qraat receive pensions of $5,000 per year each? Is it right n it justice? Granted that Logan and the others served their country. They only did what they considered their doty in the premises and they, in their lifetime received their reward. Tbev services in their own . plane were valnable, hot were they entitled to each a consideration as that arded them even after death ? (Jen. Canby was as good a soldier as Blair or Logan, and furthermore, Canby was slaughtered at hispmiofdnty. Then why should Mrs. Lecaw or Mm. Blair receive one hundred times the amount of pension given Mm. Canby? The ct is that the tendency of the times ra tbu ceantry asehteaL and the estahlishment of a dam aristocracy by means of the pensioo bureao is ia process of development. It is establishing a -had precedent. It is against the republican idea. It is advancing a policy in opposition to the theory that "there can be nycoatpensatioD except for labor. Bat looking at this matter from another standpoint: Them men served their country to the best of their ability. For this they were rewarded until their demise, and the reward is extended to their widows after their death. The locomotive engineer who is killed at his post in an accident, was serving the people and in toe discharge of his duty met bis death. Sorely, according to the precedent established bis widow is more entitled to reward than either ot these widows, who receive $5,000 per year. He filled a lowly position bat it was place that bad to be filled. He did his slotted work creditably, and he lost hie life in the discharge of his doty. For him there were so civic honors nothing hot hard work and little compensation. Is sot his widow entitled to a pension more than the others ? It may be said that be was ia the employ of a private company ; bnt was his service to the people (the government) lessened any oa that account? The Progress has always favored, and to-day ia ia favor of pensioning all soldiers, but it is squarely opposed to pensioning the famines of politicians, or paying ezborbhant pensions to officers or their families. When an officer's term of service expired be stood on the mote plane with the common sohiiiT, and bis pay should be no greater on the pension rolls than that awarded to & private. At the convention at Indianapolis, when x-Gov. Albert 6. Per? ter was so enthnsiastica) ly nominat ed for delegate at large to toe Chicago convention, in answer to loud calls be came before the audience. At first be was greatly affected by the hearty and warm, and enthusiastic greeting, but be soon recovered himself and said he felt deeply the honor thus shown him. "Not many months ago," he continued, "the President of the United States came to Induipolis, and announced beforehand- that be wanted no Bepubiiesa committee to receive him. He came to our Capital and steading upon the steps of the Capitol, delivered an address. In mentioning (he names of the great men who had honored Indiana he spoke of Thomas A. Hendricks, of I Joseph E. McDonald and of Isaac P. Gray. He never mentioned the name of the great civil captain, Oliver P. Morton. There is a man in this city, solutions in whose favor you have passed to-day, who .enlisted in the war, leaving a lucrative office and remaining there until its dose, never having asked a furlough, and then returned to biV home. That was Benjamin Hatrison, great applause but the President gavehtm uo recognition while here. I saw ia tbe procearioB hatj

Peace 10 B The surviving members of the Old Mendelssohn Society send the following To the Relatives and Friends of Mrs Lizzie Taylor: As members of the original Mendelaaohn Society of Bloom ngton we wish for ourselves and for our fellow members nov. widely scattered to express onr deep sense of loss in the death of the founder and leader of the society, Mrs. Lizzie Taylor. With an enthusiasm that inspired every member, with a constancy and sweetness of eharater habitually turned discord into harmony, with an unflagging industry that of ter seemed marvelous, with a tact and skill that enabled her frail health to triumph over all obstacles, and with a pnblio spirit which made her career a bright example to the community in which she lived Mrs. Taylor througout her residence here conducted the Society through a series of musical enterprises which not onlv fostered tbe general Uate for her loved art
and tmoecl many followers, but contributed to the prosperity and comfort oar town and carried good will and healing to' our neighbors sick and sffiloted. Our leaders voice may still be heard n the bell that tells the hours to Bloomington, her light still shines to illuminate our streets, the very stones on which we tread in our walks record her memory, and the Southern breeze whispers gratitude to her for many a fever stricken home. While we shall ever cherish in recollections the skill and the devotion of the musician, we shall also never forget the melody of her beautiful life. PASHE3 HERE AND THERE.
