AT A CHINESE INST,
ZTmv Xrorfi Jin by a t'oMMfry . LunHtordQHett' tfetttpealMM. Bavsn Register. The first night we stopped at a "firsfc class" country inn Our cook said to met "Tree olass hotel in dliina; number one, nnniber two, numbar three fhia first class no sleep with the mules." This establishment consfatel of two large blocks (city size)- of land with a narrow roadway -between. Each block is surrounded by a ten-foot wall oi sun-dried brick plastered all over with a plaster made of earth with cut-up straw- mixed into it instead of hair. Earth taken up anywhere in China with cut straw will moke good sun-dried brick or mortar, if the walls are not pat up too fast to allow the mud mortar to set and dry,- and that never happened with Japanese or Chinese wages. Our ' "first-class hotel" grounds were both entered through a wide doorway in the walls opposite each other on the -narrow roadway. One of the blocks was occupied at the farther side by the landlord owner, a large farmer, with his family, bnt walled off from the remainder of the same block, which remainder was devoted to the purposes of lodging travelers, whose, animals were lodged in the block across the road. We rode through the doorway into the yard, around which are low, one-story buildings for the lodging of .travelers; our litters were lifted from the saddles, the mules led across the road to their sheds, and we went to our room, or building. The floor was of brick; the ceiling overhead was the blaok root It had a door, bnt no latch or fastening to it except a small string that we could fasten to a nail at the side. The window glass was paper, and. therefore no curtains were necessary. The furniture consisted of a small rough table, two clumsy stools, and a wooden candlestick wi&i a nail instead of a. socket to hold our candle. We borrowed a brass wash basin and a bucket Of water. No plumbers had been there to poison ua with bad drainage. . Each guest throws the dirty 'wash water in the yard, ' We had plenty of companions in the pretty thousand-legged follows two inches long, brown and shiny, running across the floor, np the wall, hiding in the crevices, or flying across the room.. They are scavengers and destroy the little insects, if .they can catch them, and do no particular ham to man except to gnaw his' shoes, but are useful in trimming his whiskers rod hair and in eating down the dead akin, if any, around the toenails or finger nails, without waking the sleepers. All hotel lodging-rooms in Northern China have a kong to sleep on. Akong is a brick floor, raised on flues abonl thirty inches above the floor of thj room. Oar room was thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide The kong, aa usual, was bnilt across one end of i.ho room, and was seven feet in length and fifteen feet wide. In front of the kong is a square hole or furnace sunk into the ground and connected with tho flues on which the kong brick floor in laid. In winter weather a little fire U kept burning in the furnace, and the smoke and heat pass through the flues into the chimney, keeping warm the brick floor of the kong. It would not be considered crowding to sleep seven men on one kong, seven feet long and fifteen feet wide. Every traveler must carry his own mattress and blanket or kong. The inn supplies nothing but the room I have described, hot and cold water, and the privileges of cooking over the fires of the inn, except that where there is a public restaurant on the premises a traveler can join in the crowd and eat a bowl of boiled rice, plain or seasoned with onions, seaweed, or garlic, and a fish of cut-up meat bat- if he is ovor-fas tidious he had better carry his own private chop sticks. TUB WITTX fKAIAYT AfTO THK AVrnnctA riYB . iiiaii. According to Mr. Cos, "there is scarcely a family in Turkey, which has the means, that does not possess a number of women and girl slaves, blaok and white. The blaok are from Central Africa and Nubia; tho white are Circassians sold by their parents." The price of the female slaves varies with their pretensions to good looks, the comely ones being to some extent edncatsd and taught to sing, dance, and make themselves agreeable. We learn that a "girl under ton will bring $100, a madien between twelve and sixteen, if she be attractive and can play nno.n the zither, from $3,500 to $5,000. If the young woman be a blonde, with black eyes and otherwise of rare beauty she may bring from $4,000 to $6,000. An amateur will pay double that for a choice specimen, well educated in French and other graces." But Mr. Cox odds that "this tariff by no means applies to the slaves from Africa, the depots for whom are in Scutari and in tue villages on the Bosporus. The black male slave will bring $S)0, the black maiden $75, and a eunneh perhaps $400. " We are assured by the author that "the slave liai not a hard lot The child of the slave has a part of the inheritance of the father. More than half of the marriages in Turkey are with slaves." Each so-called wife of the sultan, for instance, is a slave, his rank being too exalted to permit of his entering into any marriage proper. "The fact is," thus Mr. Cox sums up his observations on the subject, shivery in Turkey is but a name. The "slaves have nothing to complain of. The white slaves rush to slavery as an alternative to something else and worse, only the black slaves who are brought from Africa have (in tho pours. of trans-t) undergone tho horrors of tho tradit ional slave, though perhaps lotl;ed down upon as one of undor-coudition, is nevertheless, from infancy to old ago, -treated as one of tho family. Aftor a female slave has worked faithfully for awhi.e, say seven years, she is nearly always freed by tho mistre.w or master of the household." New York Sun. tu . r j.vm r mm." It is reporte l that workers in certain trades in Loudon have been reduced to a condition of slavery by the "sweat ing system." Not only do the sweaters exact long honrs and small wages, but the work is dono under rouditions which are said to bo lillhy and insanitary in the highest degree. The strongest man or woman is worn out in tho course of eight or nine years, aud tin vacancies thus -roaed in the ranks of British workora are tilled bv foreign immigrants, Tim subject has been brought to the atteut jon of Parliameut r-jPttWic Opinion,
