ToUw Editor of tbs Indianapolis Joarnsl: As an earnest temperance woman, I feel in doty bound to protest against tbe action of the W.C.T.U. in indorsing the third or so-called Prohibition party as the party ol temperance and woman suffrage. Thousands of earnest temperance men and women have no confidence in the third party, nor sympathy with it, and they on 'not jo with these sisters to its support, even though it calls itself a temperance party and declares, for woman suffrage. Then the W. C. T. 17. ladies will turn sseu against litem and injnr both the caose of temperance and the canoe of woman suffrage by the ; course they are porsning though for the injory done sire, latter- cause I am not sorrowing. Men are not ail foots and they can see that these ladies are simply mooring the third party in return for its support of woman snffrage. Indeed, it ha not been manv months since Frances Wilbrd, the 'Pmriknt of the Na tionsl W. C. T. U., said in a coovBsunieation to"The Voice," a thirdparty sheet, that "if the Prohibition party fails to declare for woman snffrage in its platforms it will injure tbe esprit dn corps of the W. C T. U.," and more language to that effect And in a Massachusetts third-party convention not long ago another W. C. T. U. leader declared, as reported by "The Voice," that "tbe women demand the ballot; if yon will stand by them they will stand by yon till death,'' which is only another wav ofanyiagthe W. a T. and the W. C. T. U. became a sopporter of the hypocritical prayer-meeting-third party while that party declared for woman suffrage, though in some instances, notably in tbe State of New Yrk, its dV ela ration for woman snffrage took deeiedly a demagogical turn

The plea of "woman's ballot fer tMnperaoce" sounds well, but it is all sound and insincerity, and nothing else, and it will deceive no one who does not now favor woman snffrage, and po-

these peaks is Mount San Bernardino; with his head in tbe clouds, covered -with perpetual snows, he

vineyards ; evidences of thrift and prosperity even-where meet the gaze. This indeed seems like a laud of "preaeni plenty and future promise.'' In the center of tbis valley sits San Beruardino, the county seat of the largest county in the Golden State. With a population nf 6,000 to 7,000, which has dou

So other town in alitrnia is so well watered as San Bernardino. The city is prospering and is already rich. A movement is on foot now, to extend the city lituit, which are one mile square. New brick building of an imposing character are rising on every side, business blocks of pressed brick and terra cotta. The Stewart hotel, nearing completion is a four story brick buitdiog finely finished, will he ready for the public by February 1st. A county hospital is being built. Numerous fine residences and cottages are rented as soon as they are contracted for. There are now in course of construction, 72 buildings at a cost of 1400.000. The town is well supplied with electric lights, snd will soon have a fine system of sewerage', upon which work has jnst commenced ; cement pavements are being laid through the main part of town. Besides, there are four daily newspaper, tbe Courier, Index, Times, and Chronicle, all devoted to the interest and future of the county. There are numerous railways. A street rail way, motor road to Colton, the California Southern leading to San Diego on tbe west, and Kansas City on the east-, with a branch to jLos Angeles another to Riverside and Santa Ana, while a new branch of the Santa Fe system is being built to Lugnnia and Bedlands. The city has three banks, two wineries, two breweries, churches for all denominntions, good school hoq-te, fine opera house, academy, two flouring mills, lumber yards. The .California Centra) has a large depot and offices, in which are more than 100 employes. A large machine shop will soon be comptetvd. In the suburbs are seen many beautiful homes with flowers and shrubbery, while the high Mi-sa between the city and mountains, is t&e natural home of citrus fruits. In addition to the present industri, a folry for making sugar of beets, will soon he established. 'J hey say thousands of tons of heets cm be raised in the

valiev. Winter in San Bernardino

The vegetable world is jnst now

putting off its old dress and putting ou its new. Roses are blooming; geraniums are out in their scarlet, white and pink. Calk lillies are in their snowy beauty. Olive, fig, palm, and other trees have washed

oil in tbe rain, and sre displaying

their bemty in rosgnincent green. Oranges and lemon are showing themselves off in yellow, gold and dark emerald. The weather is all that sinners and complaining fault finders could ask. when it does not rain it is Ohio Indian summer without its smoke by day snd frost by night. When it does ruin it is Ohio May with nearly all its mud and fog left out. Notwithstanding all these things it is not the home where the dove ot contentment builds her nest. But Solomon's horseleeches that cry, Give, give, abound here. They have ciept into the heart not only of the men but also of tbe women, and Satan could hardly find it in his heart to make them bigger blood suckers than many of them are. Parties rent their houses for from $60 to 9100 per month that are not worth $1,000. Yet they want more, and to get it will break Agreements sealed with pledge, money, and all common decency and honor. . Keport has said- it, tbnt parties possessed of good homes, rent out their parlors and bed rooms, move in their kitchens ,cook in their bath room, and Bleep nobody knows where. One year's rent will more than pay tor the hnnse. Most of the houses for rent are furnished. The furniture is of a

cheap grade, und the additional rent soon pays for it. Famine prices are paid here for fruits of certain kinds, yet it is said tht they are to tie had almost for the gathering in the neighboring county. The want of a house in which to worship and in which to live, is otir greatest present trouble. We are in much the ssime condition that the Savior was when he came ipto the world. There was no room iu the house for him. So.
