LETTER FROM CALIFORNIA.

There is no light nonsense in the following rn the Texas Sittings: "Ditl you ever find a man who had a good home that whb paid for that was n anarchint ? Yon never did and vou never will."

Sam Dikoo, Ual., Iece nler 35, 1387. Editor Progress: When I reached this place early in October the weather was verv

pleasant. The hay and its - surroundings were beautiful, and, taken altogether, it was delightful ; and then the activity displayed in real estate transactione, snd in building np a fine city on these barren hills In so short a time was wonderful toone unused to such fascinating things. But after a few days tody on the subject, we began to discover that even, this wn, ptc ' a tS-t i I .

J has its disadvantage?, that the dust.

fleas and mosquitoes are, to say the least, very unpleasant, and that it can scarcely lie called a health resort. Ague, typhoid, malarial fevers and rheumatism are very prevalent, even in the temperate elimate of the coast, and they are much worse in the hot valleys of the interior. They boast here that this is the most even temperature in the world, yet tld residents have told me that they have, seen the temperature change folly -five degrees in but a little more than tour hoars. Before the rains set in the prevailing brerae was from the sea (wuthwest), and very steady during the day, except from 7 to 9 o'clock a. n., when it was calm. Rain came on the 25lh, and that

day and the next (Thanksgiving)

the rain-tall was over two inches ; more they cay than the total fall

last year. Since the rain there ie

uo dust, and not so many fleas and

mosquitoes; hut at the same time the weather is not so pleasant, as we have heavy fogs and high winds,

amounting to storms at times, w

feel the cold severely as bat few

have fires to go to, and have to en

dure it till the sun comes nut, and

a lady recently summed up the cli

mate by the rcmsrk.that "she would

rather be warm in a cold climate

than cold in a warm climate."

This city is improving rapidly,

building fine business blacks and handsome residences, and expend ing $400,000 upon a sewerage system and $80,000 to improve the city schools. I believe this place is destined to be of importance. The hotels, restaurants and lodging houses are reaping a rich harvest. - The furniture and grocery stores are doing ell. Mechanics who are connected with the building trades, .teamsters and laborers get steady work and good wages. Still there is a feeling that this state of affairs cannot last very long and then what? I am satisfied that there is a check in real estate sales. No panic, so far, as bad been predicted, bnt simply a feeling that prices bad been forced too high and that they would have to wait and let the city catch up with the prices. All who own outside property ,bave been forcing it upon the market, and have been getting more for 95x100 foot lots than an acre should have sold for. Taking, ey.ejgtfcing into consideration'.!" tbiAktoY:.mn4y; am coming from the west Indiana, Kansas, etc. : Tbia country may continue to. prosper, but there is a risk that ahould be considered. To an Indiana farmer the change is very great, and not always agreeable From grassy plains to the barren hills of this country, where it requires years to produce fruit ; and as to vegetables, a man has to compete with Chinese cheap labor. I believe the

grass crop of Indiana alone, is of

more value than all the productions of this state, aside from the wheat of the central part. It ia trite that they have no storms here. Stilt, I believe people here have to take greater care of their health than in Indiana, judging by the number we meet who are suffering from colds, rheumatism ad malarial troubles. And then 4he want of electricity in the air is jdainly and at times painfully fell, atnd to that is attributed the very isrge proportion of insanity that prevails m hs -elt, as it is gaid .that the ratio iaex times aa large as in any other state. Many will be disappointed in not finding a

beautiful country and J ,ca say to goon that there its no .use in looking for a beautiful country bere the grass does not grow and ctut&e the

bills and valleys with y,ejdre. wl f . 1

trees are dying Mth the .-scale, and

t;he vines are dy&g rttk a new dis

ease in many of the swart districts. The complaint is also made that there is but little profit in grapes at eight doilurs per ton. The expense of living here is very high, and the inconveniences to he endured are many, not the least of winch are the fleas, mosquitoes and dust, and they are almost equal to the pbgues of Egypt, Very few of the people who Ja.v come here I think feel at home, and are not willing to tie themselves down here. In fact, that ia characteristic ot California and has always been, that but few feel at home here. Tbey tl that they are jiwt staying here while business ia good, or, as they used to express it in the mines, until tbey made their pile, then they would go back to God's country. HuuCicl.

as near as I ran recollect I happened to lie sent buck to the river with a wounded soldier of our regiment. Beauregard was then making bis final charge to drive us into the river (as he had stated in the presence of a rebel we had captured, that "he would water his horse in the Tennessee that night or in hell.'') Hundreds of the boys whose regi

ments had been cut to pieces and their commanders killed or wounded took refuge at the river's bauk. As they drove us nearer and nearer and the hot and shell fell thick and fast, these men all at onee,as if panic stricken, rushed over the hank and were rolling sod tumbling down the hs'fliuo 'the river.

Immediately after reading the President's message, the Virginia legislature passed a resolution instructing their representatives in Congress to use every honorable means in their hunds to.preveut the consummation of Mr.' Cleveland's recommendations in referenee to the tax on tobacco. As the legisla

The idea is that the husband is the supporter of his wife and children. So he is in some cases, aud should be in every case, but there are many exceptions. There are many instances in which the terms are reversed, in which the wife and children support, not only themselves, but a lazy, trifling husband and father, aa well. In

such cases as this there ought to be a law to encourage husband to desert their families. It would be the best thing that sort of a husband could possibly do for his family, and it would also be a blessing to the community.

Armies of men are at work on the streets and in building. Parisian flats have cot"e into vogue, and the tall walls of modern buildings are obscuring the architectural classics. The Coliseum once stood in a field almost in the country. Now it is hemmed in by a wall and surrounded by new buildings. Some of the finest old churches are almost covered up by high tenement houses.
