UN1VERSITY NEWS ITEMS. Prof. Clark was too ill to attend his classes on last Wednesday. This term of the college year closes on Thursday, December 22d. Mr. J. R. Mutz, having recovered, has returned to this city. The colors of the Senior class are cream and gold. Prof. II. A. nofTman, professor of Greek in the Indiana University, took his Thanksgiving dinner In Princeton. What will the students now do who attended the theatre so regularly for the lust two weeks. The class in Psychology had another negative of a composite photograph taken on last Monday afternoon. The former one was not a success. Ad, Arnold, formerly of Columbus, Ind., a graduate of I. U., now holds, an important position in the proof room of the Government printing office at Washington, D. C. The Seniors met Prof. Woodburn in Composition on last Wednesday afternoon. A number of papers written by members of the class upon clearness in style, were read. Miss Ida Farts received a telegram last Wednesday requesting her to come to Ellettsville at once, and take the position of Mrs. Frank Tourner who had resigned. The first of the series of senior socials will be held to-morrow evening, at the residence of Miss Sophia Slieeks, on South College Avenue. We all wish we were students of French this term when we think that next Friday the last recitation in French, for this term, will be held. The alarm of fire en Monday morning called out few of tbe students; but had the old college burned, the number of weeping Preps, around its ashes in the morning would have been countless. The Rev. Mr. Smith of Kokomo who delivered the lecture on last Sunday afternoon, visited the University on last Monday morning, conducted the opening exercises and afterwards addressed the students for a few minutes. The Philosophic club on last Monday evening met at the residence of Professor iiryan. The subject considered was the "Origin of Right and Wrong." The discussion was given by Chrisman. The class in Intellectual Development are now reviewing preparatory to final examinations. When the review of the first half of the book js completed the first examination will be held, and when the book is completed the second will be held. This is an excellent plan and one worthy the imitation of all the departments. The Shakopenre club met on Thursday evening at the residence of Prof. Clark. The first two acts of Midsummer Night's Dream were jead. Among the visitors were Mrs. Michener of Connersville, Dr. Jordan and wifo, and Mr. Frank Hunter. The club will meet to-night instead of to-morrow evening, on account of the tHinior Seuial. The second contest for the Wicks prise, open to Freshman and Sophomores alone, was hold on last Friday evening in the old chapel. The essays en this occasion were all good, but those of Mr. Malcomb Owen and Mr. W. Nichols were especially excellent Mr. Owen was awarded first prize; Mr. Nich jla second. The Senior class held a meeting on last Wednesday afternoon in Prof. Clark's room at the University. Mr. Geo. Braxtau was elected Treasurer, Mr. Means who was formerly Treasurer of the class buiiitc out this year. Having procured bond in the sum of $10,000 Mr. Braxtan was installed. The films are considering the varioui exeroisses of commencement week early in the year and the commencement resulting from this eariy planning
will be an exceptionally gooa one. The question as to whether seniors have to write Theses or not docs not seem to have been settled- Some of our Professors say that thoy may or may not be written at the option of the student. Again others say that the matter is left to each Professor and that each Senior must write a Thesis, if so ordered by the head of his department. This is a question upon which some definite information would be of value to those who are worting qn these papers. The presidential campaign of a great nation like ours is a great thing; one whose importance and effect upon the coun
try cannot be overestimated, but how
quickly does it sink into insignificance when compared with a Freshman ejection.

Young J. Robinson of Ellettsville has secured a pension as a soldier in tbe Mexican War. John Gilmore took his place on the Board of County Commissioners Monday. Tbe Board is now Democratic 2 to 1. Newt. Taylor, a former Bloomington boy, made a brief visit to friends in this place on the first of the week. Taylor is now a telegraph operator in Greencastle. Marion Hinkle is killing something over a hundred head of hogs for curing. Pork is gradually on the iise, and the general belief is that those who pack pork will make money next season. Frank P. Tourner who had convalesced sufficiently from bis attack of malarial fever to return to Cincinnati where be is attending lectures in a medical college, has taken a relapse, and came home on Friday morniug last. Mrs. Harrison Hjgbt and. Mrs. F. T. Batterton of Spencer, were visiting Bloomington relations last week. Mrs. Batterton will leave soon for. Garden City, Kansas, to reside in the future. ' Indianapolis is exceedingly proud over the fact that the National Prohibition Convention is to convene in that city. This is owing to the ease with which the members can reach Bloouingtonbyrail,
as many wm desire to visit tne
Athens of Indiana "between the acts," as 'twere. It is generally believed that the "boom" that has been hanging
over the Kansas towns during tbe
past two years will be transferred to Indiana next year. We have in Indiana coal, stona, natural gas, and everything that goes toward making a State rich and prosperous. Then too, our people are not in debt as those in the west are. Lawrence county is solid for Ben. Harrison as the candidate for President. Monroe county Republicans are for the nominee, let him be whom he may. Anything to beat Cleveland. Another accident occurred to a freight train, Friday night lost, by which a caboose was demolished and several persons barely escaped with their lives. F. SJ. Worley and wife of Ellettsville were in the caboose and the train had reached the cut north of town, when tbe conductor ran through the car yell
ing "get out of here" and jumped to
the ground. Mr. Worley and wife jumped out hastily and clambered up the rocks just in time to see an engine crash into the car they had
vacated, making kindling wood of
it. W. B. Baker and wife intend
to leave Pratt, Kausas, for Dallas, Texas, this month, to spend the winter with their daughter, and in May next will come back to Bloomington accompanied by their daughter and remain here during the summer.
