pretensions.

The laboring men and men m

ordinary circumstances ought to

favor a railroad tax because the

additional tax they will pay will

not be more than $3.00 or 4.00, while by reason of the building of the road they will get hundreds of

lollars worth of work at wages

perhaps one-third higher.

It is to the interest of the wealthv land owners to oppose the

building of a railroad because it

will create a demand for laboring

men and they will have to pay

their farm hands higher wages.

The farm hands and poor farmers

ought to be sharp enough to see

this, and do their best for the suc

cess of the railroad tax.

Every county ot any impor

tance in Southern Indiana has more than one railroad, and they, every one, date their growth and development from the time they secured more than one road. In order to

keep up with the age Monroe co

must not hang back, but should

keep up with the procession by

securing its second, its third if possible, or a dozen railroads. The

first thing the citizen of a live town

says, when boasting of his place is

"we have three railroads.

Under the law a railroad company cannot collect the donation till the work is done and they also have to place the iron on the road and run a train Over it before they can collect fifty per cent. fr.oin the county The law carefully guards the donation. The building of grades and

bridges On a railroad is usually

figured at $10,000 per mile, so that the twenty miles of the St. Louis

& Cincinnati railroad would involve

an expenditure here of $200,000,

giving profitable employment to our laboring men and those owning

wagons and teams.
