Of course the retail business is good at Wichita, and will be as long as people come here and have money to spend. There are no pnblio improvements going on. Tha streets are simply dirt roads. whioh the most unreasonable conser
vative will not deny, and that is, the right of earning her own living,
bv her own industry and skill. It
is a constant remark of those who
are vexed by the agitation for wo
man's rights, that they have a right to mind their homes, and their
children, and are exhorted to mind
their sphere and to stick to it. In
the city of New York alone, there
are hundreds and thousands of women occuuied all day long 'in a
hundred of industries to earn their
living. Except for their work they
would have no homes, and the larger part are unmarried, and their
sphere which is not fixed for them by nature, is the employment by
which they can live.
The effort to extend the range and variety of these employments,
or to secure the guarantees for them
which men secure, can not be lion
orably met by the exhortation to stick to their spheres, and mind
their homes. Such women are do
ing both those things in the efforts they make, and the lives they live. If women are within their sphere, which is undeniable, when engaged
in any honest, manual labor, they can not be out of it when exercising any special gift or talent, whether
of in vention,of vocalism, or oratory
or whatever it may be. inere is
many an excellent man who hears
with delight, a renowned singer,
standing upon a platform and sing
ing, 'I know that my Redeemer liveth.' He does not think the
woman unephered why then is it
that a woman standing upon the
same platform and solemnly reading the same words, affects him un
pleasantly, as if she were out of her
sphere, and doing something not
quite womanly ? There is no good reason for it whatever. It is sim
ply custom. If a woman be con
ceded to be equallywith a man
responsible moral agent and a la
borer, making her living by her
own industry, and if it be perfectly
seemly for a man to promote his
advantage as such a worker, hy the privilege of voting, why should not
such a woman have every defense
and protection he has?
jls it perhaps because men are
weaker and less able to help them
selves? or is it possible because
they are physically stronger and
can insist upon their own way?"

From Rev. F. A. Rller. Campbellsburg, March 10, 1887. Editor Progress : I often think of old Monroe co., and the many old friends and former associates, while traveling over this strangeiand, forming some new acquaintances every dav. The people are not of tbe richer class, but are a very kind people. I find friends wherever I go. On the 23d of Frbruarv, being the 65th anni
versary of Mrs. .filler's Dirtnuay, a surprise dinner was given her in the parsonage. The surprise was complete. The
table was loaded - with good things ; 65
persons took dinner on that occasion, and
t was an enjoyable time indeed. March 6th was mv birthday. Boing

The 7th was the birthday of my little
granddaughter, Gertie i about thirty-five of her schoolmates came in and set a very
fine table for the occasion.
I have closed my sixth protracted meet

ery wanted. The invention of labor-saving
machinery has so greatly decreased
the labor and expense of raising corn and wheat and so greatly in
creased the area that tbey can be
profitably sold now at prices that
would have caused a dead loss if
produced under the old system. There has been no such improve
ment as this in the raising of the great southern staple, cotton, and the profits on cotton culture have
declined with the price. The at
tention of planters is now being
called to this and a vigorous effort
is being made to reduce the cost of
production and there is little doubt that this will soon be done, for as yet there has been little advance
from the old and crude system, or
lack of system, of slavery days. Bradetreet's Report says of this: Discussion is rife at the south as to the means of reducing the cost of growing cotton. Mr. S. B. Cockerill, one of the vicepresidents of the National Cotton Planters' Association, has issued a circular insisting that the cost of growing aad the cost of spinning can both be reduced, and tbat the changes possible will make cotton planting as profitable as before the war. It is first proposod to save lc. a pound by having less work with the hoo and more
mule force in its place. As to picking, the view is put forth that machine harvesting is about to be perfected. One and a half cents are to be saved in gathering. Next it is proposed to place spinning mills alongside the cotton fields. The following calculation is reached : Cost of cultivation and gathering, 4Jc; cost of spinning, 2c, making 6c a pound ; sale of yarn, 14c This leaves "for the grower 7Jc and all expenses paid. The great reduction In tba cost of getting cotton from the f rower to tho mills of .New Kngland and Surope is now affecting the price paid tho planter. There can be no doubt that tho methods of the southern cotton planter have been wasteful in tbe extreme. It is well for him tbat reform is being compelled as the benefits will be manifold. The Home Comfort Wrought Iron Ranges took all the premiums at the World "s Fair. Every Range is guaranteed in black and white. Be sure to buy one it will last a life time.
Tne Darkest Hour. For a period of four years I've been a victim of a very severe and agouiiin9csie of Salt Kheum, vbich affected my hands to such an extent that they almost became a burden. My hand became raw and scarifying, compelling me to keep it covered all the
time.
I've spent hundreds of dollars for vari

my condition, tnoy all seemea to stimulate and encourage the progress of the miserable disease, until I bad about given up all hope. But thank heaven, "the darkest hour is just before day," and I am rejoiced to know that a positive aura has been found, which is known as B. B. B. -Botanic Blood Balm. My family all rejoice at Its magical curative powers in giving me relief. My

children of a loathesome form of Itch
which had resisted all previous treatment.
