On Wednesday last a compromise was made between committees annotated by Republicans and Dem

ocrats of the Honse and Senate of

Indiana by which a Joint Convention ooold beheld that would make the result oi the election of a United States Senator legal and regular. It was agreed that neither Green Basitlt nor Lt. Got. Robertson should act, hot that Speaker Sayres of the House should preside over th .Taint Convention. This was a

genuine surprise to the mass of the

neenle who were present as specn

mnA made them feel a more

intense interest in the proceedings

iht wpra to follow, ihe canai

dates were nominated in set speeches.

St.i Senator 2Smmerman, in nom

inating Torpie, said that, "In at.. Arh Havs of the war when the

unhappy South was being trampled

nd suit unou, as it were, lurpie

arose, a friend to that unhappy

traction." After the nominations

were over, the roll of the Senate was called, resclting ss heretofore, ..J ; iho TTnuae the same, the to

tal vote being: torpie, 75; Harxison, 71 ; Allen, 4 three Republicans and one Democrat. The votes of Messrs. Branneutan and McDonald, Democrats, were objected to, and while the call of the House was being made the Democrats entered protests against Messrs. Haekey and Dickerson, and the Republicans entered protests against the votes of Messrs. Harrell Jewett,

Metsger, Mock, Shields, Hitt, and Barnes all of whose seats are contested. Senator Bailey announced

that he would enter protests against the votes of every Republican Senator, and this announcement was

greeted with cheers and hisses. Mr. Foster announced .a protest against the vote of Mr. Link, and Mr. Demoite gave notice of h protest asainst the vote of Senator Bailey

"on seneral principles," which cre

ated laughter. Mr. Gordon protested against the vote of Mr.Aeker- ' man, of Hancock county, and thus h fcnxwan comnkted. When

the roll call was ended the Republicans moved to adjourn, which

was defeated by yeas, 74 j nays 7G ;

Robinson, the Greenbaeker, voting

with the Democrats, and -bets wrre

freely offend that on the next ballot Turpie would be elected, but- it resulted exactly the same, and then the convention adjourned till 10 o'

clock a. m. Thursday. The formality of a vote for IT. S. Senator was gone through Thurs

day, Friday and Saturday with the same, remit, the four men who claimed to be "Labor Representatives" voting for Allen. Another

peculiar feature is that the four are

ates Greenbackera, but that Robin-

eon was elected by Democrats, and on all other measures has voted with that nartx.and.it was expected by

the Democrats that each day would

witness a change in bis vote, and that his ballot would give Turpie the coveted 76, and the Senatorsbip.

Up to the time of going to press the situation at Indianapolis wasunchansed; The four "Labor"

members still voting for Allen for

U. 8. Senator.
