Browning had been despondent
for several days, and his wife had been caused a great deal of anxiety by his abstracted manner and evi
dent mental worry.
No arteries or important blood
vessels were severed by the ball in
its course, and with youth and ex
cellent general health, if. is believed
that he will get wall. Wall is 35
years of age.
A number of instances are cited
in which men have been shot en
tirely through the body, and recov
ered, Mai. Peffy of our own city
was shot, while in the army, a mus
ket ball passing through his chest, penetrating one of his lungs. A
silk handkerchief was drawn care
fully through the wound to cleanse it,'nd Maj. Perry is alive to-day. fa coujersaUon with an experienced
surgeon this week, that gentleman
stated that, where there are no bones shattered, no foreign substances car
ried into tbe wound, and the ball passes entirely through the chest, there is no danger to be apprehend
ed except from hemorrhage or inflammation. iThe danger point has
passed, he believes, in Browning's
case.
Inflammation set in on Sunday,
and by advice, of the pbysioians
visitors were excluded, quiet being imperatively demanded. On Monday his condition did not change materially, and nourishment was
given to him regularly. Drs. Mc-
Pheeters, Harris and Jas. Maxwell jr., are attending to the case, aqe)
with favorable symptoms and sur
geons such as these, his friends are
hopeful of his epeeoy recovery.
Sixth Street has something of a
notoriety for suicides or attempts io that line. The first within the recollection of the Progress was that
ot Mrs. McMannus, who cut her
throat and partly severed her windpipe, while in an out-house at the foot-pf the lot on east 6th s treet upon which Hu.ll Showers1 fine res-

next was tbe guieids by hanging of Simon Eabn, who HuspenJed him- j self by the neck in his wood house., on east 6th strcet,one gloomy March ;
morning. Afterwards M. P. Harbison cut bis throat in one of the up-stairs north rooms of the court house, and was taken to Dr. Bry-
residence on east 6th street
where he died. Then E. T. Tay
lor stood up before a looking glass
in the east room of tbe long brick
house on west 6th street now owned
by D. L. Demaree, and locating his
heart, placed the muzzle of a pistol
over the spot and fired a ball that caused instant death. And these,
with the one of Friday last, are all that have occurred in Bloomington in the past twenty years. The latest from the wounded man is that his pulse had gotten
down to 82, and that tbe inflammation is but slight. He is of course
weak from the loss of blood, which was great at first, but the symptoms
are regarded by surgeons as very
hopeful indeed.
