One of the most pleasant social

gatherings that was ever held m

Bloomington was that of the young

ladies' Cold Water Reception at the

M. E. church on Tuesday night of

last week. The preparations were on a large scale, consisting of a social, literary and festive feature. The large lecture room had been cleared of the chairs and was ar

ranged with piauo, easy chairs, pictures, vases, &c, so as to resemble

a parlor, which it, did to the satis

faction of all who were present.

About M o'clock there was gathered

as pleasant a company of young

people as one could find, engaging in conversation. A little later the

company was called to order by Miss Ella Strader, the president, who stated the purpose of the gathering

to be the desire to furnish social en

joyment without the temptations

which so often mar the pleasure and damage the safety of like gatherings.

A half hour was then spent in short

essays, and a number of toasts were

responded to in a most felicitous

manner. The exercises were inter

spersed with delightful music, vocal

and instrumental. At the close of

the literary program, the company repaired to the spacious parlors

where lunch was served to all pres

ent. About 10 o'clock: the com

pany dispersed amidst the hearty

applause of all preseut at the novel and satisfactory way in which they

had been entertained. Great credit

is due all who aided in the undertaking and to those who planned

and executed so ably. While such

occasions do not entirely counteract

the mischievous features of social life, yet it is safe to say if there were

more gatherings of a similar charac

Last Saturday evening was Hallo w'en and it was celebrated by the youngsters in various ways innocently and otherwise. AH the foot bridges in town that could be moved were lifted up and thrown from their places, gates were displaced, fences were broken down, ricks of wood were torn down and built as barricades across the roads and streets, wagons were taken to

inaccessible points, etc. there Was something cute in all

this, but it is hard to discern with the naked eye. It is a wanton destruction of property which ought to be checked by the administration of wholesome and radical punish

ment-.

Before seven o'cloekon Satur

crowded with dead beats who had

come here to bleed the candidates

The candidates wisely retired to

their rooms, aod were doing purely

an office business during the day-.

There was more dead beatings and

offers to sell votas during and prev

tous to tins election than on any occasion of the kind in the history of the county. In fact this disrep

utable practice is greatly on the increase, and the time may come when

an office will cost all it ia worth.

It is alleged that there are over seven hundred men in Monroe coun

The latt game to swindle

farmers is played by a man claiming to represent a large provision

bouse in Chicago, such a firm being

anxious to learn of farmers their

opinion of the harvested erdpt This

takes with the honest tiller of the

soil, aod be proceeds to answer the question propounded. The sharper

notes down the answers carefully

and when he is through he has the

farmer sign the report to give it

weight - This accomplished) tht

man leaves, and later a note turns up in the bands of an innocent purchaser. The only safe way is

to sign nothing tor a stranger.

-It is little leaks that eventually

sink the ship. Oue great point in

saving farm machinery that should be carefully observed, and attended

to by all farmers Is that of keeping implements under shelter. More

implements tire destroyed add rendered useless by exposure than are

worn out by actual wear. The

ength of time of usefulness of al

farm implements could be prolong

ed fully one half if they were pro'

perly cared for when not in use

The farmers of Benton county

are greatly discouraged because hog

cholera of a most malignant type

has made its appearance among thei

herds. Owing to the immense corn

crop they expected to realize hi nd

somely this year by feeding for the

market, but the disease has mi.de

such iuroads upon their drovea that

few will be left tor shipment. In

some instances herds of eighty to

one hundred have leen attacked by

it and every one died Spencer Democrat.

with relutives in Bloomington.

Mrs. Carrie Mayfield, of near Bloomington, Is visitiug relatives

and friends in Speuccr.

Charley Thomas, Fred Hight

and Oscar Figg, three seventeen-

year-old boys of Spenceri ran away

from homo last week to try their fortunes in the the far west. Like too many kids of their age who have good homes, plenty to eat and good clothes, they became dissatisfied and concluded to better their condition. One week of wandering among strangers "opened their eyes" to the ways of the world, aod thev were glad to return home, and

will no doubt remain lucre.
