A Japanese Lecture Boom. We rode in our iinrikislias to the

theater, the distance being two or three miles. Arriving at the door tve removed our shoes, as shoes are never worn inside of houses here The wonderfully clean and soft matting which covers the floors takea away any unpleasantness wh ch you may feel in falling into this

custom, and, indeed, rather induces

you to believe that it is the proper

thing to do. .Near tne door we noticed a great number of small wooden tables, with strings attached and numbers upon them. These were the "cheeks" given for tho shoes left at the door by the natives. One does not wonder at this custom after seeing the Japanese shoe, which is almost universally a kind of

wooden clog, consisting of a wooden

base, upon which the foot rests, ele

vated by two transverse wooden strips,

which elevate the loot auout tour inches from the ground. I do not imagine

that they tend to increase the ease or

grace of pedestrianism, but they pos

sess many advantages as regards cleanliness. They are secured to the foot by means of two bonds of ropes crossing over the front part of the foot, and secured by being held firmly between the great toe and its next-door neighbor. These shoes are quickly slipped off and on, and even if the streets are quite muddy, the stocking or bare foot, as the case may be, may remain quite immaculate. We were taken in by the rear en

trance, and after being led up a narrow

stairway we found ourselves ui front oi the audience. About six hundred per

sons were present, all seated upon the

floor in their peculiar fashion, and list

ening quietly and attentively to the address which was being made when we

entered. It was strange to see scat

tered all over the house small trays

containing teacups and a teapot full of hot Japan tea, which, by the way, I find a most agreeable drink. A great

many were smoking, using their very

diminutive pipes, the bowl of which

will only hold a small pinch of tobacco.

This, of course, requires that they should have the means of frequently

1: anting the pipes, and with every tea

A Michigan Han Tells the Wont One

Yet.

"Must be big money in the melon business," said a loquacious man on an Illinois Central train. Why, down in Michigan where I used to live we often raised six hundred whopping big melons on a patch no bigger'n the floor of this here ear."

"That'll never do," replied the man in the next seat, with an incredulous

smile; "that'll never do in the world.

Six hundred melons would cover a

snace as bie as the floor of this car

all over so you couldn't s-se the ground.

It must be your stories that are whoppers instead of the melons." "That shows all you know about the

melon business. Ul course six nun

dred melons would cover a piece of

ground of that size all up, and a good

deal more. Everybody knows that.

There wouldn't be any lun in the busi

ness if they didn't. Why, sir, when I

had a truck farm over in Michigan,

moloas were dirt cheap, and it took a

good deal of ingenuity to make any
