Monroe county, Ind., by the neck, at near
4 o'clock in the afternoon of that day.
He was aeact wnen discovered, naving, it is shown, taken his life with bis own
hands, iiaid Huxley was near ix feet high, about 75 years of age, and weighed 160 lbs. There was a small sum ef money on his person $3 41.

Last week's bond call for $15,-
000,000 brings the amount of 3-per
cent bonds called tor redemption since the adjournment of Congress, about six weeks ago, up to $40,000,000. This does not include the "voluntary call" or invitation of the Treasury Department for holders to surrender bonds and receive face value for them, interest to be paid in full to lime of presentation. The voluntary call was for $1,000.-

ders, embracing all the brands that could be iound for sale in the State,
were snbmiited to examination and
analysis by Prof. C. F. Chandler,
a member of the btate JSoaru ana President of the New York City Board of Health, assisted by Prof. Edward G. Love, the well known United States Government chemist.
The official report shows that a a large number of the powders examined were found to contain alum
or lime ; manv of them to such an
extent as to render them seriously
objectionable for use in the preparation of human food. Alum was found in twenty-nine samples. This drug is employed in baking powders to cheapen their coat. The presence of lime is at
tributed to the impure eream of
tartar of commerc used in their manufacture. Such oream of tartar was also analyzed, and found to
contain lime and ot ler impurities ; in some samples to the extent of 93 per cent, of their en.ire weight. All the baking powders on the market, with the single exception of "Royal" (not including the alum and phosphate powders, which were lung since discarded as unsafe or inefficient by prudent housekeepers)
are made from the impure cream of
