On Wednesday evening Prof. Brown ef the Northern Indiana Normal School, located at Valparaiso, was a guest of Mr. W. T. Breeden. Mr. Breeden bo-: came personally acquainted with Prof. Brown about nine years ago, while attending the Normal School. The Professor, on account ef hi. excellent memory, had not forgotten Mr. Breeden, and when invited to tea, said, "Certainly, I remember Mr. Breeden well." A New York dispatch says : The 3d of September was tbe day fixed for the formal inauguration of the Bartholdi Statue, From the present slow progress of tbe work that expectation will have to he abandoned, asouly the first score of plates constituting tbe statue up to the knees are in position and riveted together. Not more than twenty men in all are at work. The face of the statue has been placed on the ground where visitors can inspect it at close quarters, and scratch their names on the copper surface if the guard's back is turned long enough. At the present rate the statue may be completed six months from now. The work of putting the surronndiugs ins order and finishing the grounds and inside part according to the original plan will require at least a year. During the late session of Congress over 50,000,000 acres of forfeited railroad lands were restored to the Government. Three forfeiture hills passed by the house the Gulf and Ship Island bill, to recover 625,800 acres ; the Northern Pacific, to recover 30,907,741 acres, and the New Orleaus Pacific, to recover 870,400 acres did not receive the asscut of the senate.
