On last Thursday afternoon
the usual families held their annual
pic nic in Mathers' grove below
Clear Creek ; the Loudens, Woodburns, Wilsons, Wylies, Arnotts
and Blairs and Jtev. JUyons were the families renresented. Prof.
McMillan and wite, ot Monotonia,
and Sam. Curry and wife were
among the number. In carriages
and buggies the crowd went down
the west pike four miles south, to
the grounds where they have pic
nieked for several successive years, and old and young alike enjoyed th romn in the woods for the stf-
ternoon. A history of their former
picnics was read by Miss Delia Wvlie. and a letter to the crowd
from W. P. McNary who had been
v!rh thpm in these excursions in
all the previous years. A good! many reminiscences and pleasant ; times wore recalled by these papers. At lunch, some of the outer pickets captured a stray "old settler," in the person of Henry Dillroan and brought him into camp, and made him take a little of their hard tack. The games, hatball, horseshoes.croonet. fox and ceese, and the ramble
to the' railroad bridge were indulged in as usual. The drive down

crats of the old school are not being
recognized. Why is this thus ? t-The First National Bank of this city has reduced its circulation from 1108,000 to 27,000. The $120,000 3 per cent. U. S. bonds which the bank held to secure its circulation were called in for payment on the 1st inst., and the officers of the institution concluded it
would not pay to buy other bonds
at their present price, hut decided
to reduce their bond deposit to the
lowest limit allowed one-third otj
bo nital stock. The Bauk will
deposite $30,000 of 4 per cent
bonds, giving it $2,uw circula
tion instead of $108,000 as tortner
lya contraction of the currency of
181,000. The bank paid an annu al taxof $1,080 ou its circulation.
Among the last confirmations
bv the U. S. Senate was that of
J. Feltus, editor of the Courier of this place, to be Postmaster of Bloo'uiogton. The Progress takes this opportunity to congratulate Bro. F. on the result. If anybody deserves political reward it is certainly the editor of a party paper.
