la my opinion, the alieolute dnfcv of
every man in this eountr v and especially of every educated man, is to take an
active interest in politics and in public questions. I would, however, apply
this obvious propositiot not onlv to the
men who have entire command of their own time, bat to those who are obliged to give most of their working hours to the solution of the problem of earning a livinur. Let every man give of his
leisure, be it more or less, to politics,
for it 13 reallv good citizenship to do so.
Discard at the outset, the wretched
habit which is far too prevalent in this
country, X am sorry to say, among the
moat intelligent and educated persons,
of rejrardinp- all men w.io are mucn m
politics with suspicion, and of using the word "politician" as an uncomplimentary epithet and usually with a anew. A politician, in a simple sense of he word, is a man engaged in poli
tics, and there is certainly no pursuit
demanding greater abilities or offering
cider opportunities of usefulness.
Still, your practice is r use the word
is if it were derogatory, borne of the
neat and most -useful men I have ever known have been engaged in politics
and have been stigmatized as politi
cians. Bad men there are, too. among
politicians, nodonbt, for there are bad men in other walks of life. A professor
in a college once committed a murder,
but it would be a sad deduction to as
sume that college professors are, s
class, inclined to homicide. It is al
ways narrow and bad to condemn a
class or profession on account of single, or even many instances of wrong-doing,
and there is nothing which does more
to injure politics and the public busi
ness then to assume that a man who
enters them is in some way lowered.
The calling is, and ought e be, an honorable one, and we should all seek to
honor and to elevate, not to decry itThe Little Boy and the Germans.
JNo, little boy, you can t go to ger-
mans yet. sou know toe much. When
yon get a little older you wont size
up" a girl by the muscles on her arms,
or ask her if she knows who discovered
laughing gas, or tell her about the best way to preserve white mice. When you are old enough to go to germana you will be wise enough not to know anything. You will rise to the fact that a girl is not to be judged by her muscle, that she may indulge in laughing gas, but doesn't care who discovered it, that she hates white mice, that, in short,
she doesn't want to know any
thing and doesn't want you to be wiser.
No, my boy, when you are old enough
to dance the cotillion it will be neces
sary to think with your toes and talk with vour eyes. If yon really know
anything in those days, for heaven's
sake conceal it. A man who knows any
thing of Plato or remembers who dis
covered the Pacific Ocean should shun the mazes of fashion's dance. Little boy, if yon want to be a great man in the eotillion, learn to lie a cork. Then will yon "bob up serenelv," and the
girls will say: "Isn't Mr. Emptyhead just too sweet for any use?" And you will be "too sweet for any use," and the sweeter von grow the less useful you

Thcro was a similar secession when it was proposed to disestablish the Irish Church. But eventually, in both eases, it was proved that in principle the party was right and seerssion was wrong. Comparing thoae with the present secession it was impossible not to bo struck with a vital difference. Wo sayGlve now, while the position of tho kingdom iu tho affairs of the world is free and strong;" thev" prefer to wait for a period of national difficulty, that we may yield to the Irish demand in terror, as we did in tho war of 1778, as we did to the demands of the volnnteers in 1W2, as we did to Bonaparte in 1793, and as we did in tho civil war of im. We say: "Act now, when moderation of thought and language rules in Irish counsels, when bv the willing concurrence of all sides every arrangement for tho res rvation of imperial prerogatives can be made complete and absolute." Thov would postyone till on hoar comes when the demands may bo larger and means of resistance less. We say: "Doal as with a matter between brothers a matter of justice and reason." To Make a Telephone. The telenlione which I am 'about to
describe has been a soufeo of great pleasure to me, find as I think It too
good to keep 1 will give my readers tne plans for its construction : The materials you will require are
two pine boards, ten by thirteen inches,
and halt an moll tniek, two lrosti ueot bladders, one box of four ouneo tacks, two large gutta-percha buttons, some strips of thin leather one-quarter of an inch wide, and lastly, stuue flexible wire. The best wire for the purpose is that used in book-binding machines, bnt if that cannot bo obtained any soft flexible wire will do. Prepare the bladders first by blowing them np tightly and leaving them so for a day or two until they are thoroughly stretched, but do not let them becoine dry or hard. Whili the bladdejrs aro stretching you can obtain the other materials. To begin, take one of the boards, and, having brought it to the rec(uired dimensions, draw a circle in its center eight inches in diameter, which saw out, taking care to keep on the line, for if the opening is not
round and even the instrument will not work satisfactorily. Next take one of tho bladders, after cutting the neck off, cut away about one-third of it from end to end, then soak it in warm water, but not too hot, until it becomes white and soft; after which stretch it loosely but evenly over the opening, letting the inside of the bladder be on top, nnd tack temporarily all around one ineh from the edge of the opening. Now test it by pushing the center with yout finger. If it stretches smoothly and without wrinkles it will do, but if it does not you must change its position until it does so. Next take a strip of the leather and taok completely around the edge of the opening, putiing the taoks together and taking care to keep the bladder stretched evenly while doing so. When you have tacked it properly take your knife and cut away the part of the bladder on the outside strip. This done, break off three feet of the wire and, after attaching it to one of the buttons, pass the free end through the center of the bladder until the button rests on the surface. Then fasten
a weight cf eight pounds to the end of
the wire and set m tno sun two nours or more until thoroughly dry. Proceed with the other materials in a like manaer. and when you have both
drums well dried, place one at each end of the lhw and connect the button
wires with tho main wires by loops, and
stretch it as tishtlv as possible, ine
course of the main wire should be as
straight as possible and with a few sliurii fineries.
Whenever a support is needed make a loop. To call up, strike the button with a
lead penei , and the one called win respond in like manner. This is no tov. but a good, servicea
ble telephone, and will work from five yards to five miles. Exchange.
