the fact is patent that it is both im
practicable and impossible, if not un-
, to attempt by law to compel the
observance of the Sabbath in accord
ance with the personal views of any one class of citizens, however worthy. Each citizen is entitled to be protected in the observance of the Sabbath in
accordance with his convictions. The
general sentiment of the Christian
world has recognized the necessity of the suspension of business and the adoption of a day' which the large ma
jority accept as a day of rest arid for divine worship. Our Israelitish brethren abstain from general labor and
business on Saturday, and they are
entitled to protection and respect. In
fact, it is impracticable, unwise, and indeed impossible to regulate by law the religious observance of the Sabbath. General regulation for the pro
tection of society, and for the preser
vation of the peace and good order of the community, are eminently right and uroper. But beyond this it is not

Manufacture or Chemica's. A Philadelphia paper remarks that there are about 100 sulphuric-acid works in the United States, their respective capacities ranging lrom burning one ton of brimstone per day to a plant having a capacity of 510,000 tons per annum. It is computed that dur-
the present vear 395.000 tons of
acids will be produced. Ghiuber salts
are made mostly in the vicinity of Bos
ton. The ouanutv produced is not very
large. Very little bicarbonate of soda is imuorted. Formerly all the soda
crystals were imported. Now a considerable quantity is made with inisorted soda. Soda ash is mostly inv
ported, although at a print-works on the Hudson Biver it haa been made
quite recently by the Le Blano process Two ammonia-soda works aire in opera
tion in New York State. Tin crystals are mostly produced in tho neighbor
hood of New York and Boston, tatan-
nate of soda, silioate ot soda, and iron salts are made near New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. A (rood deal of the
sndaa are imported. Bioromate of
potash is prepared on aa extensive
scale at a works in Baltimore. Acetic acid is prepared mostly in New York
and Philadelphia from the distillation
of wood. Nitrate and muriatic acids are made principally in ths New York and Boston districts; so also are mixed
acids. A Reflection on Smythe's Veracity.

There is something terrible in this. God's house stands barred and locked all the week. It looks down upon the heedless throng that over passes by, without one rebuke for their heedlessness. Worse than th's, it seems to teach that religion is not a part of life, that all the doors of industry and commerce and amusement must stand wide open daily, but the church door must be swung open only one day in seven. Why should men givo any heed to the mute exponent of Christianity that looks down upon them, with its carved doors, and pictured windows, and sculptered stone, but showing no sign of life ?
