An Indianapolis man has applied to Cleveland to be made commissioner of the United 8tates express company. This reminds the Progress that after the election last Fall, the cashier of the 1st National Bank of this place was approached by several Democrats v,ho gleefully suggested that he would have to look for other employment soon, as Cleveland would appoint Democrats to all the National Banks! working over tbe country, and as
he is said to be an exceedingly j
smooth individual it would be well
to look ont for him. He goes into
a town and remains a day or two
to get acquainted with the names and ctrcamstances of the people,
then he shows up at a drug or furniture, store to sell his preparation.
To tbe proprietoi he exhibits a long
list of names of people living in the
town to each of whom be claims he
bsis sold a bottle of his preparation
In this he displays his shrewdness,
for to people of model ate circum
stances he sells(?) a small bottle,
and to those of means, who would
be more likely to be more free with their money, he sells a large bottle.
The druggist or other party to
whom he if trying to sell a quanti
ty, recognizes those names and
thinks he will have them for future
customers, and he buys a large bill
of the stuff. Later he sees some of
the parties who were represented as
having bought some of the "polwb"
but they know nothing of it, and
the dealer then begins to realize
that be has been duped. The fel
low is a good dresser, a fine talker
carries advertising matter and testi
monials as to tbe merits of bis "oolish." and is considered one
of the "slickest" men on the road
He hails from Chicago and is a fraud, and bis preparation is also a
base- fraud. When first applied to the furniture in produces a very
good polish, but in a short time it
