as to the church in Polk tp., near which one of the members was pounded for making a speech

three-quarters of an hour in length.

It was Allen's Creek, not Chapel Hill. Short speeches are now fashionable in that church, and everything moves on serenely. Wick's Bee Hive dry goods store has been dressed up in holiday attire, and the gentlemanly proprietor has been receiving crowds of visitorsin his establishment' i

ion that the week's instruction was one of the most profitable ever given to Monroe county teachers. The instructors were Dr. E. F. Brown, of Indianapolis, Pres.

Brown of the Valparaiso Normal, and Miss Kate Huron of the Danville Normal. These instructors gave exercises well prepared, new, practical, and adapted to confer great benefit upon their hearers. If all the schools of the county are not a little better after the teachers go back to their children from this week's conference, it will be because some of our teachers are too careless to deserve a place in the school room. Miss Kale Huron conducted two or three exercises every day, in Arithmetic, Language or Pedagogics.

She made a very forcible impression upon the minds of the teachers.

Her talks were invariably of practical use. It will not be considered only formal praise to say that there are very few women in Indiana, if any, who can talk and teach before an institute with such telling effect. Miss Huron gained a high place ra the estimation of Monroe county teachers. Mr. Bell of the Ind.School Jour nal was an attentive listener and a helper in the work. Ou Wednes

day he gave a strong talk to the;

teachers on "Thoughts and Ideas.' Mr. Bell is known to nearly every teacher in Indiana, He is welcome in a Monroe county Institute. His Journal ought to be in the hands of 100 of our teachers. Dr. E. F. Brown lectured in the Walnut St. Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening on Alcohol i
