A little girl, the Chicago Tribune say, unconsciously and
touclungly testified to the drudgery of her mother's life when, on being
askt'd,"Isyour mother's hair gray ?"
she replied : "I don't know ; she's too tall for me to see the top of her head, and she never sits down."
A Kansas farmer saw a flock
of quail running along between the
rows ot corn that weqs just sprouting, Couceiving the idea that they were pulling the seed, he killed one and found in its crop, "one cutworm, twenty striped bugs, and over a hundred chinch-bogs." He thereupon concluded that he had made a mistake.
Charles Goodnight has the
largest cattle ranch in tbe world at the bead of Bed River, Texas.
He began buying land four years
ago, getting 270,000 acres at 35
cents an acre.. The price baa risen
to f2 an acre, lie is still buying. He controls 700,000 acres: To en
close his lands 250 miles of fence is required. He has 40,000 cattle, The story comes from -North Carolina of a dog that climbs trees after oppossums and coons. He dosen't stick his toe nails in like a cat, bat climbs like boy. Recently he 'shined' an elm, and caught a coon. Daring the fight that ensued both fell to tbe ground, but the dog bad the beat of the fan and won the trick. The trustees of the James Lick estate, prodded by the California pioneers, report that they have 112,000 worth of instruments
on Mount Hamilton; that they
cannot make any progress until they learn tbe focal length of the great telescope that they propose to erect, and that they hope, to com
pute the great instrument with
half the 1700,000 that Lick vised.

The carious enterprise is being conducted in New Jersey of grinding up worn out India rubber overshoes to make 'what is called "stock." This material is pressed by the manufacturers into new In
dia rubber goods. A thin coating
of fresh rubber varnish makes them look equal to articles of the best quality, but they are said to have
an outrageous lack of durability. The remarkable durability of mortar in Italy, a fact which is well known,, is attributed by the
London Evader to the practice of
allowing the lime to remain in a
pit covered with water for two
yean before it is used, whereas in
England lime is slaked and used
the same day.

Peoria has only forty thousand inhabitants, but there is one respect in which it is the biggest city in the land. There is no other from which the Government receives so large an amount of inter
nal revenue. Thirteen immense distilleries make this the centre of whiskey manufacture. The tax is ninety cents a gallon. The largest distillery is under contract to send every drop of its product to France,
to be used in the native wines of
that vine-clad country. Those who keep horses should, at least twice a week, throw in half a handful to each horse of salt and ashes. Mix up the salt and ashes by putting in about three parts of salt to one of ashes. Horses relish this, and it will keep them healthytheir bowels open, and their hair soft and fine. It will prevent them from being troubled with bots, colic, &e. A little ground sulphur mixed with the salt and ashes, and given once every two weeks, will also be beneficial. All domestic animals will be benefitted by this. They relish salt it is a want of the system and it is cruel to withhold it.
Fannie Brigbam Ward, writing from Monterey, Mexico, to the
St. Paul Pumeer-Prem, notes the
ruin that marks the track of Gen. Taylor's army in peaceful, unoffending Monterey. She then goes on to say : "Through these streets our soldiers stormed, fighting all the way. Every house was a barricade to be taken, and every room was a some of murder. Under all
the suave 'international' talk that
to-day prevJuU) in Mexico runs
current, deep and strong, of animos-
ljikely to come within the next de-
when the smouldering .fires of old hatred will burst forth
EBtast tbe now would-be

A correspondeut of the Augusta, Oa., QmdUutumalid, writing from Halifax, F. 8., says r "Halifax is delightfully situated on a peninsula eomposed almost wholly

the town -is built on ao ascent that rises gradually to the citadel, 800 feet above mean tide. It ia the
strongest fortified town in America.
Besides the citadel every imiwr-
tant point on the mainland is fortified, and the harbor islands are crowned With imporrnnt fortresses.

The Boston Gazelle says: "A tiny very tiny pig was served at a fashionable dinner the other evening, and when he was placed on the table a howl went up from tbe assembled rank and fashion surrounding him. The little beast stood on his own hoofs in tbe midst of a bed of Marshal Neil roses ; in his rosy snout was the customary lemon, and twisted in his smaH tail was a blue pond lily. He was pronounced too sweet for anything, was duly cut up and tasted, and the health of the Chinese cook was duly drunk iri champagne"." A visitor to Jameson & Go's whiskey distillery in Dublin, writcs : "The chief impression which this establishment leaves is one of size. We were shown the two largest mash tuns in the world, canable
of holding IOOjOOO gallons of grain
ana water, mixed and mashed by iron teeth revolving by machinery. Then our eyes were directed to the two largest fermenting vats in tbe world, each with a capacity of over 125,000 gallons, and as we neeoed
into them we could almost fancy we were looking into a respectablesized theatre." This firm's build
ings cover fourteen acres, the coop
erage occupying one. Tbe water
used is the same as that employed by Guinness in manufacturing their Stout. Analytical chemists bave clearly demonstrated that Dublin stout and whiskey are superior to
other similar products because the Dublin water bus greater power of
dissolving vegetable matters and of
retaining vegetable aroma than any other city in Great Britain.
The Democrat of Carroll ton,
Jtto., says: "Un Thursday 'Jnri
Lawtoo invited hlty neighbors to see bfm beat his own time of two
years ago, when his wife baked bread in eight and a quarter minutes after the wheat was standing, At 6 minutes and 10 seconds after 4 the the Buckeye reaper stood at the corner of the growing wheat. Men were stationed every few feet along the line of grain ready to seize ao armful as it fell from the reaper, and to rush with it to the thresher close by. The mill was
just sixteen rods distant. At the
drop of the hat the mules sprang to work, and in a minute and a half about a peck of threshed wheat was in a sack and on a horse that began a race fur the mill. A minute and seventeen seconds later the flour was delivered to Mrs. Lawton, and in 3 minutes 65 seconds from tbe starting of the reaper the first griddle cake was eaten. In 4 minutes 85 seconds after the starting of the reaper a pan of biscuits was passed out to the spectators. Tbe popular belief that the concentric rings in the cross-section of a tree show its age need not be shaken by a recent argument to show the contrary, according to an Ohio lawyer's letter on the subject. "In the trial of a large number of land grant cases," he says "it very frequently became important to show tbe date of survey. This was shown by the endorsement on the document, and corroborated by an examination of the hacks on the line and corner trcs of the survey These hacks invariably. left a scar, which, to the practical surveyor, was readily delected, even after a lapse of sixty years. By 'blocking'
tbe tree and counting from tin
hack made by the surveyor to the
outside of the live, it invariably
correspbmlcd with the dates as they appeared upon the returns of thr
survey cr."
New York's gold mrlles were visited by a correspondent of the Troy Budget last week. They are in Hamilton county. He found the Amsterdam Company's shaft sunk to a depth of fifty feet. The ore from this averages $14 to tbe ton, and may he milled, be says for fifty cents a ton. Superintendent Yurmuth, who is a Western miner of twenty years' experience, says that the indications are as good ns were those in California and Nevada in years gone by. The company have erected a substantial building and filled it with
improved machiney. at a cost of
$17,000. The Benson mine yields a net profit oCJ2.68 per ton. The shaft of the Bleeker mine is down only eleven feet but the average value of gold to the ton, by the assayer'B test, is 126.19 using only the material that could be sifted through a twenty-mesh sieve. It is ordinarily supposed that a wound in tbe heart is immediately fatal ; but after Tom Adams, a prominent operator of Wood Riv
er, Utah, had received a large-siz
ed bullet through that organ from
a pistol in the hands of frank
Brown, he knocked his adversary
down and beat him severely.
Third parties finally interfering,
Adams walked off to a drug shop,
where he suddenly fell dead. It was found that the bullet bad com
pletely pierced his heart. His murder is described as an unusually sad occurrence for one of that
kind, because he had closed a large
mining transaction, and with the profits was about to start fur Chica
go to meet bis wife, from whom
be had long been separated.
Orange. Texas, twenty miles
north of Sabine City "the future city of the gulf is described by a
writer in the .New Oeleans Tims-
Democrat. Orange has eight lumber mills, most of which bave shin
gle machines attached, and- they
turn out daily an aggregate of 350,-
000 feet of lumber and 50,000 shingles. The writer continues: Lu teller & Moore's mill is the best in the
State. It cost its proprietors upward of $60,000. They own about 100,000 acres of timber lands in Calcasieu parish, from which they
are supplied. Several boilers gen
erating an aggregate of 300 horse
power, are in constant use. I he en
gine was originally ordered by the
United States Government for use
on the lower Mississippi, it and its mate, afterward bought by Gov. Washburn of Illinois, cost $50,000. Mr, Lutcher assured me that he had cut 100,000 feet of
lumber within twelve hours. All-!
night work is carried on uutlcr the rays of electric lights."

myself. Down to breakfast I went, just as full of lies as a man of my size could bold, and found uo wife, but a note on the breakfast table and dated the day before, saying : 'Dear Charlie Have gone to spend a few days with mother.' And I had slept on the edge of the bed when 1 might have had it all." Arkansaw Traveler : "W h y did you strike this man ?" asked a justice of the peace of a prisoner. "I had sufficient cause, your honor. He came to my house tbe other day on a visit. He criticised my children and laughed at ray daughter's singing, turned up his nose at a fish I had caught, and put my wife to a great deal of trouble at dinner time, and " "But all that gave you no excuse to strike him with t stick of stove-wood." "I know, but let me get through. After dinner he began to talk on the tariff question. Then I hit him." "Tariff, eh? I fine you $10 for not shooting him." A college located near Boston, has issued its catalogue, for the present season, and in its prospectus tells of the beauties of "a higher education" as secured within its walls : "The method of instruction is purely exegetical. Ample eluoidation is cheerfully given, and radical profundity assiduously sought after. We are decidedly of the opinion that the young gentleman or lady aspirant to literary proficiency and business or professional usefulness cannot adumbrate a more auspicious future than to come to college. Come rural boys, from the distant mountains and swamps. Let poverty no longer obscure the light of thy genius 1" "Old Virginny" pays for the wonderful privilege of seciug a banged corpse pass through its towns, as the following item would
indicate: "Sandy Lee. father of
Charles Lee, who was hanged in the jail in Henrico county, Va., writes to the Commonwealth's attorney that the collection taken up by himself and wife on the morning of the hanging amounted to 1,200 cents and llO two-cent-picccs, that there was an immense crowd at the depot when he arrived with his son's body, and that the wagon containing the corpse- broke down ou the way to the place of burial." All nations use the grindstone, and it is perhaps the one piece of mechanism that has the same form and is the same iu principle everywhere.

A fruitful source of damage done to boilers, and one which has ruined thousands, is the practice of blowing a boiler off and immediately refilling it with cold water, while the brickwork is red hot. The Ape of Steel believes that nothing will tear a boiler to pieces
quicker than this Boilers have
exploded with disastrous effect from this cause after the fire had been
drawn, f robably most persons
not familiar with the matter would be surprised to know the pertinacity with which cold water will cling to the lowest point of a boiler under these circumstances. Local contraction of such severity is thus induced that nothing can withstand its effects, and a few repetitions are generally sufficient to ruin any boiler.
The cod fishermen will hereafter endeavor to go to sea provided with a liberal allowance of oil with which to calm troubled waters. There is no doubt about its efficacy. Tbe plan was tried by many vessels of tbe Gloucester fleet during the recent heavy gales, aud probably saved many fruin being badly damaged, if not entirely wrecked, by the terrible seas. The effect is most magical, as the oil dripping into the water prevents the sea from breaking, and the vessel is enabled to ride safely an the waves.
Sixty-nine freshmen - and fifty sophomores of Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., had a cane rush, at which the faculty and many outsiders were spectators. Goals for
each class were placed on the campus one hundred yards apart, and the cane was placed midway between the classes. At a signal both sides rushed for it. The sophomores got the cane and then thefe was a struggle for its posses
sion. After a few minutes the
riophomorcs began to near the freshman's goal, and with twelve ninute's work they carried tbe day.
