The catalogue of Indiana Uni
versity for 1883 has just been re
ceived. It is shown there are 196 students in the Preparatory De
partment, and 166 in the College Department proper. The Profes

dinary workers, as but three are
required to teach 196 pupils, while fifteen are required to teach 166
pupils in the College Department.
The Philosopher of the Bloomington
Progress once snid that Bedford or Bloomington never had a fire that was not a benefit to tbe town in tbe end ; but it is hard for property owners to soo the matter in that light. JUedord Magnet
Never mentioned Bedford in
that remark
was speaking of live
towns and only asserted that "a
tire on the public square of a town
is to it's advantage." The old
tumble-down frame shanties that occupied the half-square that now
includes Howe's, Walker's, Krue-
ger's ,Sudbury's and Collins& Kar-
seli's buildings, would have been
standiug to-day if fire had not cleared them away. The haltsquare of buildings now being
built on the west side of tbe square will be far more creditable than those that were destroyed. The Bee Hive Block, and the haudsome Waldron Block arc built where fire swept away far less creditable buildiogs. And the only fire the sleepy old town of Bedford has had on the public square, has resulted in the construction of the handsome Rawlins Block. Don't forget that the Louisville races begin May 23d. Round trip tickets will .be sold at $4. Good till the 26th.

Whenever men or boys become
a terror to the people whenever it
is dangerous to remonstrate with
them for their evil conductor when a community is actually afraid to prosecute these people lest some sort
of revenge be secretly meted out, it
has become dangerous for the outlaws. The history of Monroe to. sustains this view. Dr. E. P. Kinnicut draws the following conclusions from the re
sults obtained in twelve cases of
acute rheumatism, treated by oil of wintergreen : 1. In the oil of wintergreen we possess a most effiicient salicylate in the cure of rheumatism. 2. In its efficiency in controlling the pyrexia, the joint pains, and the disease, it at least ranks with any of the salicyl compounds. 3. The best method of its administration is in frequently repeated doses, continued iu diminished doses throughout the convalescence. 4. Its use possesses the advantage of beiug unattended with the occasional toxio effects, the frequent gastric disturbance being produced by the acid or sodium salt, even when prepared from the oil of wintergreen ; that its agreeable taste, and finally its comparative cheapness, are fur
ther recommendations in favor of
its employment.

Eighteen houses, in addition to the burnt district buildings, are being built in Bloomington. What does it all meun ? John F. May has been having the porches ot his properly, opposite Seward's foundry, enclosed, a new roof placed ou the entire building, and other improvements are being made. The house-painting fever is raging in all parts of town, and people seem to be getting op a rivalry in the matter of repairing and beautifying property. Let the good "boom" go on.
