Am AST year tm Palltlcs. Rhode Island is the only remaining Nortken State to bold its elect
ion ia the soring. Louisiana holds
Us state election in April now, but baa none this year. Michigan has sn election this month for judicial officers only. There are but eight
states left which have general elec
tions every year, and of the bienni
al states, Kentucky alone elects in the odd years. Her election oc
curs in August, and she will . select
a Governor for a - term of four
vears. Massachusetts and Rhode
Island are the only states that in
dulge in the luxury of electing a Governor every year. Bat Governors are to be chosen this Year in
Iowa and Ohio, where the term are for two years, and in New Jer
sey, where the term ia three vears.
In Pennsylvania, executive officers,
other than Governor and Lieuten
ant Governor, as well as both branches of the Legislature will be
elected in November, and in Con
necticut tbe election will be for the
members of tbe Legislature only.
In addition to the regular elections;
Georgia is soon to bold a special
election for the choice of a successor
to Governor Stephens.
It is evident that there will not
be much stir in politics this year.
It is the dullest of off vears. The
Iowa and Ohio elections, which oc
cur in October, will be among the
most intersting, but their import' nee will be mainly local. The li
quor question will be a disturbing
element in both States, and general
notifies seems likelv to be sob-.
9 merged. In Massachusetts, also,
there will be some interest when
tbe time comes, but it is still
good way off. Tbe Rhode Island canvass is tbe first ripple of a dull campaign, and does not promise to
be a very lively one. The election
comes this month, and the only dis
turbance before the autumn will be tbe midsummer campaign in Kentucky, where political contests are
too onesided to be exerting.
Lady Florence Dixie, wno is
the sensational heroine of the hour
in England, on account of the al
leged attempt at her assassination.
made by two masked men in wom
en's dotbes, at Windsor, is a re
markable character, and a woman
of unpretentious literary distinc
tion. She is a strong and dashing correspondent of tbe London Morning Pott. She bae been a great
and adventurous traveler. She
went to Zulnand, whence she wrote
thrilling letters, which were gath
ered and published in book form
entitled, "In the Land of Misfor
tune." Some years ago she made a tour though Patagonia on horseback, and her experiences in that
unfrequented country were related in a book "Across Patagonia." But it is in connection with Irish a flairs that lady Dixie has gained tbe widest notoriety. She published a pamplet entitled, "Address to tbe Tenant Farmers and people of Ireland, with advice and Warn-' ing." This fearless and imnamable address displeased tbe extreme nationalists, and satisfied .none of those engaged in tbe solution of tbe Irish question. Lady Dixie is extremely .fond of notoriety, and at one time amazed and shocked the swart at a Queen's reception, by appearing without the customary feathers and veil, and wearing abort hair. This drew forth a reprimand from the Lord Chamberlain.
forces : "I hove sounded the war
cry," he exclaimed in a loud tone and with a dramatic wave of his
arm : "'it rang in their ears and
roused them from slumber. Now
I will go among them and form
them into societies and soon we will have a congress composed of representatives from these societies.
We most unite together the French,
the German and the Russian social
ists. All will be included in our
organization who rebel against the
wrongs and tyrannies imposed upon
them under the existing condition
of affairs. The United States is
ot a nation, it is a great country whose people are of many different nationalities. I propose to associ
ate into one grand society all who
entertain Socialistic ideas and the
ories, or sympathize with them, and ear head-quarters will be in Chicago. I am doing good work here, and nowhere else would I be allowed to express my views as
freely." Herr Most seems to have
grasped the idea that America is
not only the "home of the free"
but the asylum and rendezvous of
all the cut-throats that Europe can
prodoce. Herr Most'a language is
bombastie and revolutionary, and means mischief as far as possible. It is one of the weaknesses of a Republican government that such swaggerers, as this conspirator, are
allowed full liberty of speech, and almost unlimited license of action.
Los Angeles, California, has
made great progress, materially,
since tbe construction of the South-
era Pacific Railroad. A population cf 22,000 is now claimed for
it, which, if correct, would show an increase of a hundred per cent.
within a few years. Tbe influx is
reported to be so large that there
are neither dwellings nor stores
nor hotels sufficient to meet the de
mand. There is hardly a block in
the town without new buildings in
process of erection. The suburbs
are exceptionally beautiful. Hand-
some villas extend lor two and a half miles in all directions, and
each has its vines, orange trees, or
chards and flower garden. The surrounding country is an almost
unbroken tract of vineyards, or
ange groves and trait ranches.
The American population is of the
most intelligent and cultivated
class. Many professional men have
settled there in fruit growing and
wine making, being attracted by the well nigh perfect climate and the fear of felling victims in the Eastern States to hereditary consumption. i Olive growing is one of the most interesting features of agriculture in California. The State pos
sesses some beautiful groves, and
one ranch owner, Ellwood Cooper of Santa Barbara, is said to have de
rived a profit of 2,200 an acre from his plantation. Others, how
ever, express doubts as to whether
this species of plant culture can be
made generally and permanently profitable. One continual source of apprehension must always be the scale worm, which threatens most of California's fruit trees, the olive not excepted. California could easily raise an olive crop as large as that of Italy, which yearly sells for 150,000,000.
Herr Most is still in this country 'agitating.' When but heard from he was in Philadelphia, diuflas0g the threats and attempts of the Jftbjlists to prevent the coronatioe (4 tk Czar. Herr Most annonnees tna be is about to make a wcond tour of i&e United States,

The Prep. Chapel was full of visitors and students, last Friday afternoon, to listen to the No. 8 exercise. The performance passed off successfully, as usual, the pupils from No. 8, especially, acquitting themselves with credit. Jennie Seward, as "Josiah Allen's Wife," Lida McNary and Josie Pitman in strong declamations, gave three of the best perform
ances of the afternoon. The dia
logue of Charley Mellett and Wal
ter Howe, which always takes, was
well given. Ida Faris and Lora
Wilson represented Preparatoryin
declamation, and reflected credit
upon the school, as they always do when they appear in public. These

contest. Messrs. Lanman, Rcnshaw aud Tourner pleased the au
dience with their instrumental
music. They would make a good orchestra by themselves. The au
dience seemed well repaid for at
tendance in the entire performance,
The excellent work from No. 8
occasioned the remark that tbe
Preparatory department could be congratulated on the good declaim
ing material which it will receive
next September.
The next public exercise of Prep, will be the Contest. It will be two weeks from next Tuesday night. Every citizen of Bloom
ington, and the country adjoining,
should take an interest in this ex
ercise. A friendly and profitabl
rivalry in literary work cannot fail
to do the students good.

In Desha county, this State, one of
tbe plagues of the South, the buf
falo gnat, is doing an unprecedent
ed amount of damage. In the hot
torn lands it is positively danger
ous to even drive stock of any kind i t '. .a
tnrougn tnem, as tne gnats are there by the million. In the vicinity
of Chicol City on two plantations
six Horses and mules have been killed by them. In Bolivar county, Miss., directly across the river from here, nearly one hundred mules
have been killed by the pests,
The Miller plantation in the same
county has also lost a great many
horses and mules. The damage
aone oy tne gnats is as great as
that done by the overflow. m The amount now paid by tbe Government in pensions is double tbe interest on the National debt.
There was more paid out in pensions last year by ten per cent, than during the entire period from the foundation of the Government to the breakiag out of the rebellion Since 1861 there have been f 562,741,170.67 expended for this pur
pose, and the appropriation for the
coming year is f 100,000,000. This is equivalent to a per capita tax of $2.50 upon the entire population of the country.
