The committee- of arrangements performed their work wellr Hot week, and as a result all things-

were prepared for the reception of I

the New Albany visitors in due time, on Tuesday. The steam fire engine arrived in the morning on the freight train accompanied by an engineer and fireman, and was pat in order before the hour for the arrival of the express train from the South. Snow began falling early in the forenoon, and continued to foil during all the time of the ceremonies on the streets. At 12 o'clock the train arrived, bringing the New Albany guests, and a line of march was promptly formed lor the National Hotel, where the visitors were to partake of dinner. .The 1 ! lowing was the order of procession : Chief Ifarahai He Kinney.

Bloomington Brass Band. Steam fire Engine. Visitors, ia Carriages. Mayor and City Officers. City Council. C'mniiltee of Arrangements . t-'itizens of Blooraington. The dining-room was handsomely !: rated with banners and mot

toes, and the tables literally groan

ed beneath the smoking viands. A Ktand had been erected in

front of "the ruins," and it was

two o'clock before the procession xrri.ed at this place to take part in tii presentation ceremonies. 'i't.e steam fire engine was placed in trout of the stand, and around and about it and the speaker's stand, were congregated about 2,000' people, oblivious to the heavy fa!! ;f?now which melted, saturate! and chilled all who were exxxiHcd ! it. The programme at this place was as follows: Music by the Band. . J'rVvr by Prof. BaUeotioe. i.'.rt., if Welcome by Eon.W.F. i . .viii.ijj, Master of Ceremonies.

Presentation of the Engine, on behalf of the Citizens of New Albany, by J. B. Applegnte.Esq., Editor New Albany Ledger.

Speech of Acceptance by Mayor of

JSioomington, u. X . uodus. Address on behalf of Citizens, by J. R. East, Esq. Short addresses by Hon. Robt. W. Miers, W.P.Rogers, H.H.Friedley, and Dr. Moss, Bloomington, and Messrs. Hurley, Stephens McQuiddy, Keppley, Hancilman and Kestler, of New Albany. Mr. Browning's address of welcome was as follows : A fev weeks ago there came to us aa appeal for help from the towns and cities on the Ohio River that were inundated by the flood of 188S. With this appeal was a cry from men, women and children who had been made homeless and destitute of food and raiment. In respense to these appeals from the suffering thousands, the good people of Bloomington' and vicinity contributed in money, clothing and food 2,000, of which a large portion was sent to the city of New Albany . This contributioa has truly been to the citizens of Bloomingten, as "bread cast upon Uia waters," and is seen to-day in the presentation by the city of New Albany of a steam fire engine, by a committee of tier citizens. And now, in behtif of the citizens of Bloomington, I most cordially welcome you gentlemen of the committee in this mage i Scent donation to this onr city, and extend to yon the hospitality of the ever generous hearted people of Bloomington. Mr. Applegate's speech wm as

follows:

A few weeks ago-the people living

on the banks- of the Ohio were over

whelmed by a dire calamity. The usually peaceful and beautiful stream rising in the Alleghany mountains

and sowing along the borders of six great states, finally mingling its cur

rent -ziih the "Father of Waters," hadaoddeatj risen, burst its- bonds

and spread consternation and desola

tion in its coarse.

It is a grand sight to behold a

majestic riter rise nearly seventy feet

above its usual level, but lerrible in

it grandeur a mighty element mov

ing with resistless force.

When the banks of that river are

lined with great manufactories ;when its shores are dotted with peaceful

and happy homes, such a raging

torrent carries destruction and death in its flow.

Mingling with the roar of angry waters went up a cry of distress. It went not in vain. Seon came the aeeweqjngcryswitt as lighting flash ; "BjjoojttUG.no!. Ixp,, Feb. 17. At a meeting of citizsns held tonight one thousand' dollars waa snb -scribed for the flood sufferers and a car load of provisions denoted. In addition the city council gives five bundled dollars.. Tture will be a collection taken up in- the College and churches." Other cities and towns and villagesresponded', and responded nobly. Their aeta desei veto be inscribed in "letters of gold upon pillars of brass."

They are recorded in thousands of

grateful hearts, where they will be

cherised through life. ' A few days ago the same wires wnieh bore tidings of aid and sym

pathy from the generous people of

Bloomington to the suffering people

of New Albany, bore a calamitous

story of the ravag-is of fire, another element ot destruction, which in a

few hours laid wests a large portion of this beautiful city. Our hearts went out in sympathy for those who had remember eu us so kindly in the day of our tribulation With sourt of our citizens, Mr. Andros Hancilman and others, that sympathy took active practical form. A petition waa circulated, numerously signed, and a generous council resolved to donate to Bloomington a steam fire engine to help ward oft future de vouring flames not those Calvin and Wesley used to talk about but those which may come in the near future. By the partiality of friends it is

made my pleasing duty, on behalf of

the Mayor and Common Council and citizens ot Mew Albany, to present to the City of Bloomington this useful as well as beautiful eugine. Well niaj- we all hope that the services of the "Sanderson" may never be needed; but should the time of trial come, she will not be found wanting. If called into active service may the stream of water poured out prove as strong, as awift and well directed as was the stream ot charity poured out by the good people ot Bloomington in our time of trouble. May a sbimer of light upon the sparkliug drops of water as they are hurled against the destroying flames, cause

rainbow, emblem of promise and

hope, to span the scene, to remind us of the bond of friendship between the two cities, Mew Albany and Bloomington. The respouse by .Mayor Dudds was as follows ; Gsktlcmek In behaif of the citi- j

sens of lltooiningtoB, I accept this !

generous gift, and return their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to you,and through you to the Common Council

and citizens of New A'bsny for this

noble expression of your friendship.

(cheers.) You speak of the liberality

of our people in the time of your

distress. 1 will simply say our pee

pie gladly and freely done what they

could to assist in relieving the suffer

ing from the flood, asking and ex

pectins no recompense, save the con

sciousness of having done their

duty. This is a new era in the his

tory of the world something new under the sua. Behold We see a

city coming out of a cteep, dark flood,

bearing in its arms a magufiesnt

steam fire engine, and casting it at

the feet of a sister citv as a token of

gratitude and love, (applause.) The chronic grumbler tells us that the world is getting worse. Now, is this true? In the lig it ot this example of liberality is it not false? I am proud to day that I am a citizen of Indiana; a state thttt boasts of a city like New Albany that is gov erned by this spirit of liberality; a spirit of frateraal lov. (cheers.) Yes gentlemen, we accept ibis gift of you as a token of your fr iendship, hoping that in all time to come the bond that sow binda us together may grow stronger and stronger, and remain .unbroken .forever. Again, gentlemen, thank you, and through you the citizens of New Albany, for this grand donation. Fellow citizens permit me, in conslusion, to express the hope that you will strive to per

petuate and strengthen the bond of

fraternal brotherhood between the two sister allies, and may it ever grow brighter and brighter, (leud eheora.) H. H. Fried ley said: "Ladles and Gen tie men and the Com raittee from New Albany. I believe it baa bean announced ia the papers that I would make an address on this occasion, but I assure you I will not do such s thing. All that I shall do is to say that I second everything that baa been said from this stand to-day. But as the Railroad company baa been mentioned and as you have called me out especially in its interest,- it may not be improper to say, that when the southern border of our beautiful state was visited by a calamitous flood, and you, as citizens, and

you fanners who I see before me, desired

to aid tnese stricken people by sending them food and clothing instead of money, the Bailroad company mentioned at onee offered to carry all provision and cloth, ing thus contributed, free of charge. You did your duty nobly and car load after car load was conveyed to the suffering. Charges could have been made and collected, yet this "Soul-leas Corporation," as many of you. farmers choose to call it when you chance to have stock killed, did this kind act in the interest of humanity. And a few days ago, when it - was first

rumored that the people of New Albany, in their goodness of heart, would present this city with a steam flro engine, Col. Young, President of the Road, at once

telegraphed me tnat fee would transport the engine and the committee accompanying it, from New Albany to Bloomington Ave of charge. But all that has been dona by this company has been done by the same spirit and kindness as baa been manifested by individuals, and I did not come here to boast of it, but in obedience to your call, to make my bow in behalf of the Bailroad company.' At the close of the speech mak

ing the engine was moved down to the cistern south of the bank,

where it threw water in a very sat

isfaotory manner during the next

two hours.

The banquet was given at the Orchard House, Tuesday night,

and was an immense success in ev

ery way. The fine taste and excellent judgment of the hostess,

Mrs. Ella Orchard, was visible in all the arrangements, and every

one who attended was delighted.

The tables were handsomely spread, the rooms elegantly decorated, while the Bloomington Orchestra furnished music during the entire

evening.

After the Bupper kud been dis

posed of in a leisurely manner

toasts were in order, Maj. Mulky acting as toast master. The toasts were as follows : 1. New Albany. Mr. Apple-

gate, who was to respond, was not present and the rest of the visitors

were too bashful to make a speech.

2. City of Bloomington, as it used to be. Response by Dr. J. G.
